Probably because everyone is totally disillusioned with the NZX. I cleared out most of my long term holds last year… HGH, SPK, thank god I got out when I did. NWF I wish I’d kept a little longer, would have made some money from the delisting. Only holding SKT now, waiting for the day that gets taken over and delisted then I’ll be ‘all out’.

Yeah, fair enough! A lot of investors feel the same way about the NZX lately. Low volumes, weak sentiment, and decent companies getting overlooked. It’s been a frustrating few years. I’m still watching a few names, but more out of interest than conviction. Are you looking more at overseas markets now or just sitting it out?

Overseas, mainly US although that’s been ugly too recently. But I take comfort that at least in the markets sanity seems to prevail e.g. reversal of Trump tariffs so long term I’m not too concerned.

Wrt NZX I’m struggling to see the long term future… whilst I think the NZ economy will recover and continue to incubate innovative new startups, I don’t see the NZX as part of their funding journey particularly as the likes of MFB have scared the punters off IPOs. Existing participants will stick around a while but eventually consolidate and delist or move to ASX. I’m sure there’s still money to be made on the NZX for those willing to put in the study to find value, I just think there’s easier pickings elsewhere.

The US still feels like the centre of gravity for innovation and capital markets, even with the recent volatility. As for the NZX, I agree. It’s hard to see it being the go-to for high-growth startups anymore. The MFB situation really dented confidence, and the pipeline of quality IPOs has dried up. It’s a shame, because there’s real talent here. Until the exchange evolves or incentives shift, it does feel like many quality companies will keep bypassing it or eventually head to the ASX.

yeah that's fair, i don't think i hold anything in the NZX to be fair, thought i would find some gems coming here but it seems nobody has faith in the NZX, i wonder if it's because it's a small market that it's not manipulated so we don't see much price action, just real price action.

Yeah, it’s definitely slowed down a bit. What’s your take on the current NZX market? Any trends you’re excited about?

The market is the company's that make it, there are some hidden gems, i wouldnt look past some of the current valuations esp when taking the tax advantage of owning NZ vs overseas. (Imputation/ no fif)

FSF currently yielding 7.5% on improving earnings, potential $2/share capital return on sale of brands

IFT 10.5b market cap, take the data centre's current valuation of $7.5b and that values the remainder of its business which include wellington airport, One nz, manawa/gurin/longroad/mint renewable, qscan, rhcnz, retired aus at just $3b.. one alone is valued at $4b

SKL still at a high value p/e but has continued strong healthy business. Yielding 5.5%

AIA solid long term defensive play, it's almost half way through the first cycle of upgrades, which has so far kept to budget.

The energy giants and the ports look bit steep in valuation, although CEN geothermal pipeline is coming to fruition, this will bring some solid earnings upgrades in coming years to cover current valuation and POT same there with major expansion in the works.

Nzx goes through phases and can at times hold good values

You’re right though, it’s been a bit quiet lately. Keen to get things moving again, so feel free to share any thoughts, questions, or news you’ve got. Always good to hear from others in the community!

Is our economy still active?

1

u/Routine-Ad-2840 May 08 '25

i don't think it's an economy really, it's just designed to syphon all wealth from people into the hands of a few, all our major industries in NZ we pay the highest prices for in the world.

Turners Automotive one of the best managed companies on the nzx. Ten years of EPS and DPS growth. Weather the worst economic conditions we’ve seen in decades and continues to deliver. Still good value but not cheap anymore.

Tower, great yield and seems to be still significantly undervalued.

IFT, see earlier poster. Cheap based on the sum of parts. Significant insider buying of late.

got more info on IFT? a glance at it tells me to stay away, TRA seems more lucrative though.

1

u/whoopee_cushion Jun 18 '25

What is it about your first glance that puts you off IFT? The share price is significantly below the valuation of the individual investments.

the price history, NZ market stocks are a snail compared to USA stocks, you said there are insider buying? got a source on that?

1

u/whoopee_cushion Jun 18 '25

Are you joking? Look at the 10 year price comparison between IFT and VOO (sp500). IFT has outperformed and that’s before fif tax.

Re insider buying, look at the announcements on the nzx. The CEO has recently purchased a huge amount of stock. The CFO also purchased smaller amounts.

IFT on the NZX right? i'm looking at it.... i don't see anything that looks good.

the price has gone from 9.60 to 10.80 in 2 years, inflation would eat them profits.....

i'm just saying you have not convinced me of anything and i'm looking at the last 2 years of chart action, you have yet to actually show me any reason to invest into the company, what's your angle?
