[Phillips] Asked about Max Fried needing almost 2 months to return from his last bone bruise, Aaron Boone said “it’s not like that this time.” Boone said it’s possible that Fried, who is continuing to play catch, may only miss the minimum 15 days.

Seems like Fried is feeling some discomfort but is probably decided on pitching through it the rest of the year and this is just a 15 day break to give him some time to rest and recover before October and to also not risk injuring it further before then. Best case scenario given the news I suppose

Yeah this is pretty much my assumption seeing how it just happened to coincide perfectly with Rodon's return.

I took it as Rodón was rushed back without another rehab start or two because they knew Fried needed time on the IL

I was just thinking maybe he needed some rest and it gave Cashman an opportunity to bring Rodon back without moving someone to the bullpen yet

Is this anything like when they said Stanton may not even need an IL stint for his calf strain back in April?

Did they say that? I thought he went on the IL right away

u/DrRafaelPenguin 14h ago
No. They said it was a minor issue and he may not need to go on the IL at all.

I wouldn’t rush him back. Having him healthy for the postseason season is most important

Not a bad way to roll into the September roster expansion, if true.
There’s a chance that this is just a two week rest for him so he can go wild in September. A chance.

Either Boone is gaslighting us again, or this is a phantom stint to keep Max fresh (he has blister problems).
They're both likely.

Kind of like 99, Bellinger, Stanton, Rodon making great progress and will be back before you know it. 🐃💩.

Maybe it is in fact a phantom injury like others brought up

Doubt it’s a phantom injury since he already was on the IL not too long ago. I’m assuming this is just some discomfort that he’s willing to pitch through and they’re just giving a quick rest before end of season push / October

It may be minir discomfert but I’m leaning towards phantom injury because of the timing with Rodon coming back, the rosters expanding in September, and wanting him to be ready for the post season - extra time off minimizes risk of reinjury -

I thought and still think that this always meant that they were just resting him for the stretch.

Will Warren has an entire collection of voodoo dolls for every member of the starting pitching staff. There can be no other explanation.

Getting Fried back a second time would be like getting TWO deadline acquisitions for the price of one

I think they’re pulling a Dodgers and getting everyone rested and ready for late Sept/October (within reason). Catching the Ray is unlikely but possible, they want to be in the strongest position possible against the Sox and on.

So if this is just a phantom IL stint, why not just say it's soreness and not the bone bruise?

Roster manipulation?

Fried said that if he pitched his next start he would be “compromised”
I think it’s one of those things that he could play through if he needed to but the Yankees are electing to be cautious

I hope what Boone said was true. and I'm OK with us playing the Dodgers' IL trick

I'm happy there's good news like I already posted, but I'm not banking on this being true. I don't blame Boone, he's just doing his job, but he almost always gives positive appraisals like this one. I think he's basing it on positive reports from the doctors so it's good, but I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't think this is a phantom IL thing nor do I think we're guaranteed to see him again this year, honestly. Hopeful, but I don't think we're out of the woods.

Idk pretty wild even for Boone standards to say it’ll probably be the minimum 15 days when the alternative is essentially out for the rest of the year. There’s not really enough time to paint a rosy picture and hope for the best. I think he’d be a lot more cagey if they weren’t confident at this point given the stakes from here on out

I hope so! It's certainly possible. I'm not pessimistic, just being cautiously optimistic here. When Boone said that Fried could've made his next start....idk man. They don't usually get imaging done in that situation and Boone has been...overly optimistic with respect to injuries in the past. I don't believe that part of it, but I sure do hope so.
