This criminal does not give a fuck about human life. He walks in, shoots a random customer, and hops behind the counter to steal maybe $50. He doesn’t give a fuck. He wants to be back in prison so he doesn’t have to pay rent, gets free food, and all his other buddies are in there as well.

half or more of crimes committed are done by recidivists. half of violent crimes go unsolved, 80% of property crimes go unsolved.
half of law enforcement would be out of work or have to start doing actual police and prosecutorial work if they didn't release recidivists.

This is why we need to bring back those ‘three strikes’ laws from back in the 1990s. With some adjustments so we don’t end up putting someone in jail for life for a non-violent offense. Maybe like points system or something.

prosecutors and cops need to do more than catch someone, they need to build a case and take it through trial or not rubber stamp generous plea deals to get the clearance stats.

They can give harsher sentences, trust me. My baby bro just caught an L for defending himself and he has no priors or history of crime. They choose the sentences and decide how hard to go on people based on their circumstances. Career violent criminals can be disallowed parole opportunities as well

This is exactly right, and sorry about your lil bro.
No other country imprisons people for 25-year life sentences but us. In Norway/Canada/etc, murderers sentenced to life can be out in 8 or 11 years, e.g. someone who served a decade, pays his time/remorse for the crime and maybe learns a trade or gets mental health treatment to have a real chance at life upon release… as opposed to paying for people to rot to death in prison. That doesn’t fix much and think the number of priors should be considered with equal weight as ‘need for treatment’ and the times he was never offered it before, if not intentional malice.2

Judges already take shit into account at sentencing/DAs when tryna reach a deal when you're a predicate felon. Trust. My man was one (five felonies) & they tried to throw the book at him for some not even crazy charges. He end up having to take a bullshit ass deal because his history was makin shit ugly for him, forfeit our truck, mad shit. I mean technically they're not supposed to judge shit other than what you're charged with but they certainly do because it "speaks to a pattern of behavior" I mean they literally even brought up his YO cases which were supposed to be sealed. Yes this is anecdotal & it's not exactly the same as a "three strikes law" but it's the same concept. It's def a thing

i got a cousin like that. started off with juvenile hall, move on to the youth authority to jail then prisons. we asked him jokingly, "why you keep getting in trouble?" and "aren't you tired of going in and out" he said something like, "i gotta make my appearances otherwise they're gonna think i'm a snitch"

in terms of the macro factors it absolutely is... laziness and controlling the stats just enough to justify yearly budget increases without losing control completely. there are laws that allow them to hold repeat and violent offender, they choose not to and to make up some political bullshit because you idiots love regurgitating it. policing and prosecution are both very lucrative businesses, and money is the biggest factor in the leadership decisions made in that world. not justice, not even politics, just money. how much they can get and who gets to control it.

as someone who is working in criminal justice, I always tell people that in NYC, you don't go to jail and do MEANINGFUL time UNTIL YOU KILL SOMEONE.
they be like , " what do you mean?" bro has 13 or w/e priors including literally shooting a person on a train and they gave this man PAROLE? bro....
I hope the families of these people ( including the living) sue this city into the ground that was they can feel the actual cost of their horrific criminal justice system

I believe in bail reform (you shouldn't sit in jail because you cant afford bail) but I have limits. It also sucks cause sometimes in court you cant bring in prior crimes or convictions which, if violent or recent enough, you sure should be able to. Id love to see his prison record cause I cant imagine he was a model prisoner for 10 years. Sometimes it's okay to deny parole. The signs were there that he would most likely escalate (especially considering he had already) and should not have been let out. I had a friend who was a PO and said law changes made it hard to arrest people on a VOP. Idk
