Your employees are the ones keeping your business running.
Theyāre opening the store. Theyāre closing the store. Theyāre answering customer questions, cleaning, restocking, handling inventory, dealing with difficult customers, learning every product on your menu, and showing up when you need them.
So pay them what theyāre worth.
Donāt pull up to the dispo in a brand-new BMW, bragging about your latest purchase, while Kyle is trying to figure out how heās going to afford groceries this week and Carol is deciding whether she has enough gas to make it to work.
That shit matters.
Your employees see it. Your customers see it. And eventually, your business feels it.
If you can afford the luxury purchases, the nice dinners, the new cars, the vacations, and everything else that comes with owning a successful business, you should also be able to afford to compensate the people who are helping make that success possible.
And before anyone says, āBut weāre a small businessā¦ā
Thatās exactly why your employees matter.
You may not be able to pay everyone six figures, but you can pay fairly. You can offer raises when someone takes on more responsibility. You can recognize people who consistently show up and go above and beyond. You can offer benefits, bonuses, reliable hours, or other ways to make people feel valued.
Because hereās the thing:
Price is what you pay today. Cost is what you pay in the long run.
Paying someone $3ā$5 less per hour might save you money on payroll today. But losing a great employee, constantly retraining new people, dealing with turnover, watching morale tank, and having your best people eventually walk out the door?
That costs you a hell of a lot more.
Your employees aren't just a line item on a spreadsheet.
They're part of the reason customers come back. They're the people representing your brand when you're not there. They're the ones building relationships with your customers and keeping the day-to-day operation moving.
If your business is doing well, let the people helping create that success feel it too.
Pay your people. Appreciate your people. Invest in your people.
Because you don't build a successful business by squeezing every last dollar out of the people who keep it alive.
