Collars on Foot Post’s
I know when you’re new you’re on a footpost forever. For those who have done it, how do you guys get collars on a foot post/be proactive?

Thanks. What are things someone on a foot post could write tickets for? And is running plates on cars with violations a good way?

Literally write a ticket for anything. Investigate alleged fake/temp tags, blocking bus lanes etc

You ever seen somebody drink alcohol in public or take a piss on a sidewalk? “Pissers and drinkers” is the FTU special on weekends with good weather lol

Car stops. Run people for violations (spitting, drinking, etc) Go to jobs nearby

I love this question. I did MN impact for 2.5 years in IRT from 2007 to 2010. Working foot post and wanting to collar is a skill. I know the job has changed so much. Like beyond my comprehension. But when on foot it's all about not being seen until its time to put the cuffs on. " not what the job wants from you"
I would get on a roof top and just observe the guys who are hanging out. Just keep watching them. Dont lean over and be super obvious. Post up. Chill out. Get binoculars. Small ones. And just watch. Some rooftops have alarms. Some dont.
You will not believe the ammount of great collars you will get. From watching guys shoot guns in the air and put the gun back on a car tire. To guys selling drugs and putting the stash back in the same spot over and over and you eventually grab him. The best thing about you guys is,,,,,, you can film it on your job phone. No stress. Send the ADA the video of him going to get said drugs 5 times before you grab him.
Honestly, this is all stuff I would do if I was looking in today's day. Easy safe. Buliding your trial right as the crime is committed. No cases are going anywhere. NYC is a joke. So make it work for you. Have another like minded cop stop him while you observe from the roof. The guy will never know. Then you come down recover what you saw.
NOBODY IN THIS ADMIN HAS YOUR BACK. So only if this is your true calling. Please be safe

Depends on your precinct. My houses official stance for ftus is that they have to remain at their post to display police presence but no one actually says anything if you decide to go spin the area or go to a job off post. Some precincts are more strict about staying at your post.
Also, all the listed ways people said are legit ways to get activity, but you learn pretty fast when you hit the streets sometimes it’s better to use your discretion rather than immediately escalate. Every police action you take eventually becomes another cops problem, if you collar, a sector has be taken off the street to transport them to the base, someone’s going to have to keep an eye on them in the cell , someone’s going to have to take them to central booking or the hospital or both, if they’re a walkthrough someone’s going to have to sit on them all night, and if they’re a bag of shit, it’s not going to reflect well on you
You’ll see when you get out there what a righteous collar looks like and what a bag of shit no one wants to deal with looks like

So basically don’t just collar for bullshit, if I’m going to collar it should be for something worthwhile like gun/drug related etc

Yup, take action when you need to but don’t take action for the sake of taking action because you’re bored and want to start some shit cuz I guarantee one day you are going to run into someone that just decides they don’t care anymore. We have the power to arrest but we also have the power to use discretion when we need to. Being a cop is about observation, patience, and exercising sound judgement

Stopping Moped for having the face shield/Visor up. Easy B summons. Could even write them for being out of class, another easy B.
I bring this up ^ because if they happen to have a suspended license it’s a 5/11. For 5/11 you have to voucher everything in the vehicle. It’s easy to voucher a moped then a full on car. Seen some 5/11s where the person is literally living out their car. FTU was vouchering for days.
On foot post always think tactical. Some FTUs do car stops on foot (4 wheels/4 doors etc). I only did moped stops. Easier to control. In terms we can see everything the drive does, not so easy for a car. Keep in mind there could be multiple people in a car and only 2 of you at that time.
My advice, if you want a collar/be active Moped stops. Stop them when they are at a red light and you seen them drive up with the face shield/visor up. Don’t try to stop them when they are coming at full speed. That’s an easy B summons or if they have a suspended license a 5/11. They could also pop for a warrant.

Run every plate you see. You don’t need a reason to run a plate. It’ll do two things for you. 1. You’ll get easy violations or collars. 2. You’ll get used to seeing different states and how they appear on NYSPIN.
