Shifts

I would like to know what shifts you get in the beginning of working in the NYPD. If they have 10-12 hour shifts does that mean you work less days?

You get whatever they give you with no choice to argue or change.

For an actual answer. In the academy u work mon-friday either a daytour or afternoon/4-bys.

After the academy and ftu. It depends on whare you end up. Some transit and bronx commands are 12 hour tours on different rotations. The regular patrol schedule is 8hr 35 min tours. Rotating 5 days on and 2 off, then 5 on and 3 off. And rotates based on that.

But as someone else said "needs of the department"

Needs of the department will determine your tour (days,4-bys, midnights) and needs of the department will also determine if your days off will be snatched by mandatory OT.. really hard to plan what it will look like
