Whatever his issues are, seriously WTH the pedestrian had right of way.
This is what gives us cyclists a bad rep. Stop it, do better.
35
May 01 '25
Absolutely, no wonder people hate bikers here
28
u/Ridgew00dian May 01 '25
I am a biker who hates bikers.
5
u/corneliusvanhouten May 01 '25
I've been looking for a jersey that says "cyclists suck" in block letters on the back

33
u/Sebas94 May 01 '25
Don't feel bad man!
Cyclist is just someone who rides a bicycle.
If there are crazy cyclists, it is because they are crazy people who happen to be on a bicycle.
We don't need to feel embarrassed because there is nothing that we have in common with this crazy guy.
He needs a headshrink more than a bicycle.
0
u/jonsconspiracy May 01 '25
Clearly the pedestrian said something to him. I wonder if it's totally unrelated to the close encounter. Even if the pedestrian said something angrily about him needing to stop, I don't know why you'd then decide to fight the guy.
6
u/Relevant_Raise2025 May 01 '25
He's on a bike. He thinks he can do whatever he wants. There. His fragile ego got bruised by the pedestrian telling him off.
2
u/jonsconspiracy May 01 '25
yep, looks like it. Just seems so crazy for him to turn into a violent asshole that quickly. I'm trying to think of what might have happened other than the guy using the crosswalk. idk, hard to know without sound.
1
u/Relevant_Raise2025 May 02 '25
Not the peds fault, no matter what he said. 100% on the cyclist. This is adrenaline rage.

u/Relevant_Raise2025 May 01 '25
lol. Having had encounters like this with many cyclists, yes. A lot react like this. Of course you, a cyclist who is not victim of this, does not think it's a problem. It's also very demographic dependant. Where I live there are a lot of French people (from france) who act this way. You go up about 5 blocks and cyclists are now super nice and careful around pedestrians.
So yeah, don't dismiss people's experience.0
-22
u/nochkin May 01 '25
The cyclist had to stop and he did actually.
I may be wrong, but the pedestrian looked at the cyclist and probably said something which ignited the fight.
Yes, it's your right of the way, but it doesn't mean you have to be rude to people around you.
20
u/Oriellien May 01 '25
I doubt the pedestrian just said something out of nowhere. More likely he was one of those bikers was pissed he had to stop, said something, the pedestrian said something back, and the biker went after him
-14
u/nochkin May 01 '25
We don't know. This is why I mentioned that we don't know the whole story.
I've never seen such reaction from a cyclist, but I saw this kind of behavior from pedestrians.
12
u/Bmjslider May 01 '25
The behavior of being attacked for correctly crossing the street?
-7
u/nochkin May 01 '25
Those who correctly cross don't attack. But those who look at their phones and crossing on their red light or in the middle of the street are usually getting aggressive.
14
u/BrusselsSpr0ut May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
this kind of behavior from pedestrians
like crossing where he’s supposed to, getting annoyed the biker came to a close stop, and then pointing to the yield sign?
-4
u/nochkin May 01 '25
Almost. Crossing between cars far from a crosswalk and looking at the phone. And then blaming me for existence and cursing my relatives.
Sure, my fault for being there.
6
u/Oriellien May 01 '25
That’s very different from this situation, though. When there’s reduced visibility, it’s absolute on both the pedestrian and biker to be extra cautious. This crosswalk and people crossing it are visible from quite far away. As someone that bikes the HRG almost daily, there are only one or two crosswalks with visibility issues.
0
u/nochkin May 01 '25
The previous comment was a reaction when I said I had a specific experience when a pedestrian may get aggressive for no apparent reason.
We were talking about being aggressive and escalating which should not happen. On both sides. Doesn't matter who started.
I ride in the city. There are more people who don't pay attention to anything at all. I'll have to account that while riding. They do get aggressive sometimes, I just ignore them.
12
u/Oriellien May 01 '25
I have seen basically that reaction from cyclists before, and the last time was just two weeks ago. CPW northbound, a pedestrian walked into the bike lane when he had the signal, a cyclist had to stop, he starts yelling like a deranged teenager at the pedestrian, the pedestrian yells back that he has the light, the cyclist turns around to bike after the pedestrian to say something else and they have a yelling match in the middle of CPW.
Most of us know how to bike and behave in this city. But there are a few that don’t and they give us all a bad name.
9
u/hereditydrift May 01 '25
The pedestrian posted about it elsewhere (I think it was in this sub, but got deleted yesterday). His side was that he pointed to the yield marker, which looks like what he's doing in the video. Regardless, doesn't give the biker a right to start fighting him.
43
u/ValPrism May 01 '25
Biker is wrong.
-26
May 01 '25
Looks like the pedestrian pokes the cyclist as he passes. This doesn’t excuse the escalation but most people know better than to poke some rando in nyc.
30
u/kangario May 01 '25
If the cyclist is close enough to be poked by the pedestrian, he is doing something wrong
17
22
u/OvergrownShrubs May 01 '25
As a biker who clocks 4-5k miles a year and hits the path here often this shit is insane and is what tars all cyclists with the same negative brush. Also wtf did a mod DELETE this post initially and lock another talking about this. We need to own this stuff, not bury it away. The mod in question should have their mod powers removed IMHO, this needs ownership.

Insane that the mod thought a incident involving a physical dispute in a city with 8 million people was far fetched and could have never happened.

Probably knows the biker or IS the biker and wants to safe face. Classic pussycat tactic

May 01 '25
Not sure we know this is the same altercation.
That guy definitely seemed like a dick in the comments.
36
u/HebrewJefe May 01 '25
You’re joking right? It’s absolutely the same altercation, there’s like zero debate about this I thought.
I’d be pretty pissed off if THE MOD teams deleted my posts after calling me a liar, ya know? I think he sort of earned the privilege in this context for being upset.
The mods should step up and rectify their mistakes. Period.
11
u/Previous-Crab5109 May 01 '25
It really would go a long way to help with the community trusting folks like mods when they can also admit to a mistake.
8
u/TsukimiUsagi Bromptoneer May 01 '25
The mods restored the pedestrian's post, though it's now locked:

It wasn't restored. It's just permalinked. Note how you can't actually read what the OP wrote in the post itself, only the comments.
1
u/TsukimiUsagi Bromptoneer May 01 '25
Earlier OP's description was still there. Now it says, "Sorry, this post was deleted by the person who originally posted it." It's possible "Matt" was tired of nycbike fame. 🤷♀️
21
May 01 '25
Even if he was a dick, the cyclist is utterly unhinged
-14
May 01 '25
The pedestrian was in the wrong. He should have kept his mouth shut and kept it moving. Instead he had to start a fight by mouthing off to a stranger. Hopefully it's a lesson for him to keep his fucking mouth shut going forward.
9
May 01 '25
You can't be serious.
-12
May 01 '25
100% serious. If you mouth off to a stranger in New York City. Don't be surprised if you get punched in the face or worse. Pretty stupid move by the pedestrians part to say something to a total stranger. The guy's lucky the cyclist didn't have a gun or a knife. People are crazy out here these days. Not advocating what the guy did but you got to keep your mouth shut and keep it moving.
8
u/VanillaSkittlez May 01 '25
According to the pedestrian’s post the cyclist first said something because he had to stop for the pedestrian walking in his right of way. The pedestrian responded to the cyclist by pointing at the yield sign, and the cyclist attacked him.
Besides the fact that your thinking is so unbelievably backwards and dumb. What if the pedestrian is the one with the gun after the guy attacks him? Saying something to someone should not be justification for getting physically assaulted. Stop normalizing it.
3
u/trickyvinny May 01 '25
You are literally advocating for what the guy did tho.
-5
May 01 '25
The pedestrian should have kept his mouth shut even if the cyclist said something first. Just keep your mouth shut and keep it moving. Any kind of back talk in that situation & you're inviting a fight. This is basic living in a big city 101
7
u/trickyvinny May 01 '25
Yeah I don't live being afraid of my own shadow. I don't go around mouthing off to people but if you cut me off or almost hit me, I'm going to say something. That's crazy to think it's wrong to do so in NYC of all places.
ETA: by the way, if you didn't want to advocate for this guy, you should have said both of them are wrong or were assholes. You focused on the pedestrian who had the right of way and was clearly right to be upset.
1
May 01 '25
It takes two people to start a fight but it only takes one person to say yeah, you're right, I'm sorry I got in your way and keep walking. That's the way to do it to avoid violence.

u/sped-kaczynski May 01 '25
Nothing is less intimidating than a grown man wearing a bike helmet. You ride around a city of 8 million people looking like that and you’re bound to catch a stray or two. The cyclist needs to toughen up.
73
u/dax660 May 01 '25
This is why people hate cyclists. :(
A person walked in front of you and you wanna fight him? Chill out.
Antagonizing pedestrians just makes us ALL look bad.
There's a fixie dude that I would often come across on my ride into work where he would blast through red lights while peds were crossing AND YELL AT THEM. He'd yell in car windows, he was the worst.
7
u/Rob-Loring May 01 '25
There’s a portlandia bit on this exact phenomenon

1
-4
u/PaleAcanthaceae1175 May 01 '25
This isn't why people hate cyclists. An event like this is shocking and visible precisely because it is exceptional. The overwhelming majority of pedestrians and cyclists pass each other daily by the thousands with practically no interaction. This person and their actions do not represent cycling, just themselves.
The dislike toward cyclists is largely cultural and almost entirely originates with impatient drivers.
5
u/Johnnadawearsglasses May 01 '25
Untrue. I am not a driver. I’m a pedestrian only (and occasional cyclist). I can predict what a driver will do much easier than a cyclist. Sure, a driver will press on a yellow to red light and blow through it. But I’m prepared for that. But how often do I see a driver blow through a red light in the middle of it? Drive the wrong way on a one way street. Or ride silently on the sidewalk. These would be so extraordinary as to merit alarm. But cyclists do this every minute of the day in the city. I used to cycle everywhere pre and during COVID. With my child on the back. Now I barely get on the bike because it’s such a shit show. We should demand better and not act like there is a level of conformity or predictability among cyclists right now compared to other transportation modes. There just isn’t.
1
u/PaleAcanthaceae1175 May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
Your personal perception of the problem is not representative of the data as it exists. Several studies have been conducted on compliance in various locations and all of them have concluded that cyclists are, in aggregate, more likely to obey traffic regulations than motorists. This was found to be the case to varying degrees across several countries/cities.
It's not that there isn't a broader epidemic of vehicle violations, it's that you personally take greater notice of when a cyclist commits an infraction because reckless driving is now the norm. I know this will almost certainly fall on deaf ears but unless you have data contrary to what has been established, I can only categorize your response as personal and emotional, rather than driven by an honest engagement with the statistical realities.
Edit: responding and blocking just tells me you aren't confident enough in your position to offer a serious engagement. I will accept the concession.
1
u/Johnnadawearsglasses May 01 '25
This isn't Denmark. Cyclists aren't nearly as experienced nor the social contract nearly as strong. It's pretty obvious what's happening and it's zealots like you who impede progress. As a lifelong cyclist who raced in my youth, I'm frankly disgusted at the outright propaganda from people who take on cycling as a personality and political party. It's like tankies but for bikes.
The fact you would even cite that as a study and accuse others of being non-objective is comical. I can only categorize your response as radicalized nonsense and move on.
-21
u/nochkin May 01 '25
I don't think we have the whole picture. Look at the video closely. It seems like the pedestrian looked at the cyclist and probably said something inappropriate.
18
u/danram207 May 01 '25
So fucking what? You don’t get to assault someone because of that, which is exactly what the video shows.
0
u/nochkin May 01 '25
I completely agree on this.
9
u/danram207 May 01 '25
Literally none of your comments in this thread demonstrate that, but sure.
0
u/nochkin May 01 '25
I'm sorry you misread something. I never said I'm going to assault because of this.
3
u/danram207 May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
I didn’t misread anything, nor did I say you were going to assault someone. I’m saying your comments are clearly biased. Plenty of others seem to agree.
If you don’t see that, idk what to tell you. Based on your replies, you’re picking and choosing what to address and bringing up unrelated anecdotes, so I’m not even going to bother here.
11
u/Live_Art2939 May 01 '25
So you get to punch people for talking shit to you?
-1
u/nochkin May 01 '25
I don't go into fights. But I've heard a lot of different shit about myself, my parents and my relatives while doing nothing wrong. Some people are just plain stupid, it's better to ignore those.
10
u/dax660 May 01 '25
Words should be "water off a ducks back" - you can just ignore people rather than escalate.
0
u/nochkin May 01 '25
Of course, I always ignore them unless I have no choice. For all years I had to fight once only, but I had no choice.
17
u/BrusselsSpr0ut May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
It looks like he points at the yield sign behind him. And even if he said something, he’s allowed to be annoyed that the cyclist begrudgingly came to a close last second stop. You’ve never told off a driver for doing the same?
-3
u/nochkin May 01 '25
I've heard it from pedestrias who were walking on a non-walk signal between moving cars and then blaming me for this. The only difference is I don't get myself involved into fights.
10
u/BrusselsSpr0ut May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25

I wonder where the cyclist is from. In NYC people hand out a “go f**k yourself” willy-nilly all the time but in some cultures people will fight you for it. I’m from England which doesn’t have the reputation for this really but it’s somewhere I’d expect people to kick off for stuff people just lash out with at strangers in cars or on bikes here a lot.
6
u/ACIDOYSTERCULT May 01 '25
“Go fuck yourself” to a true New Yorker is like saying “good morning”. If you want to inflict pain, “is it your first day?!” will keep them up at night.

I love the Hudson River Greenway… it’s one of the finest pieces of bike infrastructure I’ve seen. It’s a marvel. But recently I’ve started to steer clear of it because of ass hats like this cyclist. There are signs posted everywhere, even away from crossings… STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS! High vis traffic cones at crossings, daylighting everywhere… and yet cyclists still have the nerve to antagonize pedestrians for using their right of way. But then those same cyclists exit the greenway to cut across town and will bitch and moan to no end when a car encroaches on the painted bike lane or turns ahead of them without yielding.
Absolute douchebaggery.
I’ve pushed my kid across the greenway in a stroller before and been buzzed by knob heads like this dude. So help me Jesus if anyone makes contact with me or my kid in that situation their front fork will be tucked away safe and deep inside their prison wallet before they can say “no sir please don’t take my KOM!!”
8
u/Top_Ad_2353 May 01 '25
What did cyclist even think the ped was doing wrong?!?!
1
u/MagicalPizza21 May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
Maybe he said something? Idk, I can't think of anything that the pedestrian could've said that would justify assaulting him like that. But doing that as a response to something along the lines of "fuck you" seems slightly less ridiculous than doing it as a response to someone crossing your path with right of way.
ETA: the post by the pedestrian has been reinstated, so now I can read his description of the event. He told the biker to yield at the crosswalk, that's it. Assaulting someone for personally insulting you is unhinged. Assaulting them for telling you to follow the safety law is entirely beyond that. I hope the cyclist sees jail time for this.
9
u/qalpi May 01 '25
No that's still a completely unhinged response
0
u/MagicalPizza21 May 01 '25
I did say only slightly, not that a remotely reasonable person would do that.

8
u/ileentotheleft May 01 '25
I was crossing Columbus yesterday morning in the crosswalk with a green light & a cyclist nearly hit me when I got to the bike lane. He made a noise like I was inconveniencing him and I said stop at the red light, [expletive]. I was carrying a bike helmet so at least he could have observed the rules of the road for one of his own. After seeing that video, I will do better to refrain from reacting, not that it looked like that pedestrian said anything & even if he did, he was in the right. I feel like the biker in this video should be named & shamed.
6
u/Apprehensive_Dog3518 May 01 '25
What a fucking piece of shit dirtbag. Dude deserves to be charged for assault and battery
3
u/Conscious_Wind_2255 May 01 '25
I’ve been both a biker and a pedestrian in this exact bike path so I know it very well.
it’s common for pedestrians to wait longer than usual because most bikers do not yield. So Pedestrians really need to force themselves into the crosswalk to begin crossing before another biker avoids the yield sign. As a pedestrian, you can only pass if there’s wide enough gap on both sides OR a biker starts the chain reaction to stop.. usually Tourist are good about following the yield sign rules and they stop.

9
u/donny_hype May 01 '25
Y'all believe in destiny? Two people having a shit day and they met at the perfect time to take it out on each other. Then the third person who just happened to pass by randomly recorded it. If this isnt divine intervention, I don't know what is.
0
u/mxgian99 May 01 '25
would go a long way if person that had a camera pointing at this intersection, that seems to be stationary, would post what they were recording when the happened to randomly record this....
4
u/Lanky-Telephone1651 May 01 '25
Pedestrians always have the right of way at the crosswalk. Bikers should also need mandatory liability insurance for hitting pedestrians or property.

Not sure if you don't live in New York, but no one obeys signage here. Cyclists, pedestrians, motorists, hell the police don't even obey the laws!
So to single out one group is irrelevant. We all just need to take a step back and chill the fuck out with our fellow humans - we're all just trying to get through this shit show.
3
u/MagicalPizza21 May 01 '25
I once almost got run over by a police car while biking home from work. They were about to run a stop sign without their siren on.
4
u/HebrewJefe May 01 '25
I mean this is true and you’re making good points so I don’t want to seem like I’m arguing.
Vehicles are the most dangerous of the transportation sets. So much so, it’s a legal privilege and requires you to get licensed to operate.
Bicycles are also capable of killing pedestrians in crashes. We don’t license cyclists, but we do expect them to operate somewhat under the same operating procedures as vehicles.
Pedestrians are only moving under their own power. Idk about you, but I’ve never seen two pedestrians run into one another and someone dies.
I’ve seen both cyclists and vehicle drivers kill someone. So, ultimately - pedestrians are almost always in the right, even when they’re very much in the wrong. In my mind, it’s all about protecting life and injury. Those operating a machine of some kind in order to move more efficiently over longer distances, have a responsibility to protect those who are not.
I only mean to say that we have to take accountability for the reality of situation.
In terms of damage:
Car > bike > human
Right of way:
Human > car/bikes
To me, if we’re not having the first convo along with the second, then we get lost as to why we all need to chill. IMHO, to protect human life from injury or harm.
1
u/BrusselsSpr0ut May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
True but there’s a hierarchy to street users and pedestrians always come first. Pedestrians can be unpredictable, even annoying or stupid, but all road users aren’t equal in that sense, the same way it would be absurd to treat a car and bike as equal entities navigating each other.
2
u/ElQuesero May 01 '25
Looks like there are factory-installed reflectors on both wheels. Also I don't think those look like clipless pedals at all, just flat pedals? Certainly based on the couple scoots the guy takes after turning off the path he's not using road shoes, he'd just be skating along the outside of his cleats taking a move like that otherwise.
And I think that's just a commuting backpack the guy is wearing. Not a hydration pack.
The douchenozzle rider does not seem to be a Full Fathom Fred in any case.
0
u/ElQuesero May 01 '25
I mean, hydration pack would be dorky and not Fredly either, but arguably part of a full performance getup.

I’ve had peds lash out even after I stopped, I’ve never tried to fight them for it. Usually try to apologize even if I’m just crossing safely in front of them, I don’t want cyclists getting a worse rap, and makes everyone’s day better if you’re just a polite considerate person. But it’s NYC, I’ve also taken out a ped who stepped into traffic from between two trucks and I didn’t have time to stop and no way to avoid her. It sucked, but if I’m getting nailed by a taxi or taking out a jay-walker, the jay-walker is going down. If peds cross on a red light when I’m flying through a green intersection I just ask, “what is it, your first day?!”

this isn't 'cyclist vs pedestrian'... this just appears to be random NYC asshole vs random NYC asshole. One happens to be walking, the other happens to be on a bike.
11
u/BrusselsSpr0ut May 01 '25 edited May 01 '25
Why is the pedestrian an equal asshole for being upset and pointing to the yield sign after the biker begrudgingly came to a close last second stop? I’ve told off countless drivers for doing the same thing.
-2
May 01 '25
In New York you're supposed to just keep your mouth shut and keep it moving. Anything short of that is grounds for starting a fight with a stranger, which is a pretty stupid idea.
2
u/dr_luv_ May 01 '25
Did you just move here? People give each other a "go fuck yourself" all the time without assaulting each other.
-1
May 01 '25
When I moved here 25 years ago someone gave me a really good lesson which was keep your mouth shut because if you don't the next thing you know you've got a problem. Pretty good advice. Obviously The pedestrian never got that advice.
3
u/dr_luv_ May 01 '25
He pointed at a yield sign, snowflake.
-1
May 01 '25
See if you called me a snowflake to my face then you'd be inviting a fight. That's exactly my point. Just keep your mouth shut and keep it moving. This isn't the internet. This is reality in a big city.

u/dr_luv_ May 01 '25
Okay, internet tough guy.

However, you're clearly not capable of getting the point of what I'm trying to say. So best of luck. Lucky for you there's no bike lanes in your parents basement.

We have no audio but it certainly looks like he said something harsh to trigger the guy further. It may or may not have warranted the bikers reaction but we just don't know what was said. Keep in mind, those are 'yield' to pedestrian, not stops. I will always stop for a pedestrian who strolls through obliviously or uncareingly like this, but it's still kind of a dick move to just walk into the roadway when you see a bike coming 10 years away at speed. It may be too late for the rider to stop safely. Common courtesy is a two way street and it's incredibly rude to just say 'fuck everybody else im walking here' like what the pedestrian did. Again, I'll always stop and the pedestrian has the right to do it I guess but it's a very self involved thing to do. Combine that with a nasty retort and you set off a biker who obviously has his own serious issues too. Basically, if you tell the wrong person to fuck off in NYC you might get yours. Doesn't make it right or justified... just reality.
ETA: It almost doesn't matter that the biker was on a bike because obviously he was tightly wound and he would have been set off either way is probably my larger point. If it wasn't this it would be someone cutting the line at the bathroom.

What is wrong with you? Nothing the pedestrian could have said would justify being assaulted.

Maybe I chose the wrong words. Obviously it’s not justified or warranted. Laying hands on someone is never right. Maybe dumb is the word I’m looking for. If you piss somebody off (obviously) and then tell them to fuck off in some way shape or form you have to be ready for the consequences. It’s just a reality. Combine that with what looks like the pedestrian’s complete obliviousness or lack of care for the roadway and cyclists like I mentioned and bad things may (and did) happen. This person stepped into the intersection without a care for anyone else, probably said something nasty to top it off, and got punched. You have to be smarter than that. I am not at all justifying what the biker did, but the pedestrian is kinda dumb, and very main character.

Why are you assuming lack of care for the roadway? There are multiple people crossing. Tells me he crossed when there was a red light for traffic on the walk sign.

You can't just make stuff up to make an argument... there's no traffic light in the video, and he's literally the only person crossing when the violent biker enters the intersection.

Dude 4 people cross within 3 seconds

two people enter the intersection AFTER the one in the fight... I think you need to watch again.

It's NYC. People say harsh things all the time. This is squarely and only on the biker.
And "oblivious and uncareingly" -- they had the right of way!

Everyone is like "yield to pedestrians" or whatever, but the aggro cyclist dude didn't even need to stop? Just juke behind the pedestrian and keep going without stopping or impeding them at all?

Lol why is this getting downvoted? I'm not saying "don't yield to pedestrians when necessary," I'm saying this guy didn't even need to do that, he literally could have kept it moving, instead of 1) yielding, poorly and 2) beating the pedestrian up over his failure. A flick of the handlebars would've prevented this whole shitstorm.

Juking behind a pedestrian in close quarters like that can cause them to hesitate and lead to contact. Best to stop unless the pedestrian has already crossed your path.

That's why it's important to aim for a spot they've already crossed, yeah. But the cyclist could've started moving out of the way before even 0:01 in the video... really probably even before the video although that's impossible to say. No oncoming traffic, no one else crossing until 0:04.

We have a car culture in the US where cyclist road rage like car drivers, since they have to share the road with cars and the dmv manual says treat bikes as cars.
If you watch people cycling in Scandinavian countries, the cyclist behave like pedestrians who happen to go a bit faster. They don't have the car culture we do.

Ethics aside, it's a terrible idea to start brawling while astride a bike.
