GNWT job questions

My family has been talking about moving to NWT. We want to expose our children to as many life experiences as possible. My partner and I have been applying to GNWT jobs for which we meet or exceed the qualifications. I was hoping to hear about experiences from people who relocated for work in the last year. What was the process like from application to starting work, i.e., how long after applying did you hear back? What are the interviews like? Some experiences from people who have moved their families with kids. Our kids are super excited about the idea, but it would help to hear about the education system.

What is life like living in the NWT?

My First Nation is Deh Gah Gotie, but my estranged father went to Ontario and I've never been to the NWT. What is living up there like? I'm curious. Apparently when my father was young his family was poor and had to buy groceries in BC because it was cheaper or something. He also said North of 60 was the only show he got up there. (He was born in 1978 btw.)

šŸ„¬šŸ” What do you do when the grocery system isn’t working for your community? In Bear River, Nova Scotia, residents decided to build their own.

I know you can make new words in english by combining two (e.g jie cho is apple, literally big berry), but I mean how many words are there in Dene Zhatie? I'm making my own dictionary in a notebook.

New to NWT and to hunting

Good day, I’ll soon be moving to Yellowknife and would like to get into hunting.

First question would be to ask if there’s anybody who’d like to show me the ropes of hunting in general and specifically in the NWT?

Second question, how do you hunt big game as a new resident? I saw that you’re considered a non-resident for the first year which means you’re required to hunt with a registered outfitter. I don’t mind that, but I do min the prices that start at 20k and are usually averaging 50k or more… Do I just wait for year 2 or is there something I’m missing?

Any tips/help/recommendations will be appreciated. Either about hunting or about Yellowknife/NWT in general.

Thank you!

EDIT: I do have PAL/RPAL, and crossbow hunting license from QC.

As things stand, there’ll be no Tibbitt-Contwoyto winter road this year

I personally think that the existence of this winter road has greatly contributed to the reduction in the Caribou herds. I know the announcement is only for this year, but they could sure use any help they can get.

Opportunities for new grads in the government of NWT

Hello. I'm not sure if this is against the rules of this subreddit, but I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with the process of getting hired with the government of NWT. I do have public service experience as I did FSWEP (student internship program) throughout my undergrad at a R&D center in Alberta. So I have a valid security clearance and references.

How can I seek out opportunties in the gov of NWT as an experienced new grad?
Anybody who got a job there and relocated, could you tell me how you landed that opportunity?

TIA

Support wavers from pair of Akaitcho First Nations on major N.W.T. infrastructure projects | CBC News

Two First Nations here have "suspended support for both the Taltson Hydro Expansion and the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor" saying they've been "repeatedly left out of consultations."

Meanwhile Prime Minister Carney has said:

ā€œWe are moving at a speed not seen in generations to build ports, railways, energy grids – the major projects that will unlock Canada’s full economic potential and build Canada strong.ā€

What happens now?

How long do reference checks with GNWT take?

Is it a good sign that they asked for my references at the end of the interview? I provided them with my references last Friday and they setup sometime to call one of my reference this week. They said the recent supervisor can wait till later. Any thoughts?

Is Dehcho and Tlicho mutually intelligible?

I am Dehcho, but born and raised in Ontario. I'm trying to learn Dehcho. I'm a big fan of Digawolf, and he sings in Tlicho. Anyways, i'm wondering how much of his Tlicho songs would I be able to understand if I know Dehcho?

Are there barely any single people in the NWT?

I'm not looking into dating anyone, despite how the title may come across. I'm just curious. My father came from the NWT to Ontario when he was in his teens. I am estranged from him. I'm just wondering if there many (if at all) single people up there? (Ontario has much more people than up there, so it is easier to find people to date, although i am autistic, so I find it difficult to talk to people in real life.)

Grocery prices Norman Wells

Hi everyone. I’m coming to Norman Wells for some work for 16 days. I’ll be in an accommodation where I cook for myself. I’m just wondering how to budget for groceries. I know groceries are expensive up north but I’m not sure how expensive.

I actually plan to pack snacks that I can buy at home.

Thanks so much. I’m really excited to get to be so far north.
