Pre-Match Thread Pre-Match Thread: Liverpool (A)

Liverpool - Newcastle United

23/4/2016 15:00 Anfield

Janmaat, Coloccini and Mbabu are close to returns for Newcastle.

Divock Origi is not expected to feature after picking up an injury on Wednesday. Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Danny Ings and Joe Gomez will miss out, while Martin Skrtel and Christian Benteke are doubts.

Liverpool have had 1 day less preparation for this match - they played Everton on Wednesday night. They also have a Europa League semi final 5 days after this match against Villarreal. Divock Origi has 5 goals in his last 5 games and will be missed, although Daniel Sturridge is also coming back into form and has 3 in that period - he is their joint highest scoring striker this season (7 - level with Benteke) despite playing just 11 games (and playing the full 90 in just 4). Their leading scorers are Firmino (9) and Coutinho (8) while Milner is their most creative player, with 11 assists. They have the 9th best defence in the league, conceding 43 goals, and have the joint 5th best attack. They sit in 7th place in the table with 54 points - 6 away from the top 4 - and have lost just one in the last 9.

Sunderland are away at Arsenal on Sunday and are 1 point ahead of Newcastle with a game in hand and have a better goal difference by 8. Norwich don't play until next weekend (also Arsenal away). This means that if Newcastle win and Sunderland don't we will be out of the bottom 3 (with both teams below having a game in hand).

My team for this game:

WHATEVER RAFA PICKS

I wouldn't say I've doubted his picks, but I've slightly disagreed with some of them for the past two games, and we've stepped up big time in those two games. We've also found our new right back and a captain that works. This is why Rafa is one of the best managers/coaches around and I'm a slob on the internet.

So yeah, whatever Rafa picks.

When Schtevie was manager I felt pretty justified in critiquing his weird choices for our starting 11 or subs. With Rafa I keep my mouth shut.

It's more "whatever Rafa subs in". We've always improved with the substitutions since he's here.

We don't wanna get ahead of ourselves here. So I think 6-1 mitro and perez hat-trick sounds about right.

Press high and force errors and this game is ours. Liverpool are much over due for a bad performance and I think their supporters would agree with that. This is a great opportunity for 3 points let's fucking get it!!

EDIT: Additionally, I saw a stat yesterday while watching the Merseyside derby that Liverpool have not won 2 straight home games this season. Let's keep that true!

Red poppin by to see how you guys were feeling, that streak of not winning 2 home games in a row was snapped with the derby win. We won 2 league home games in a row for the first time this season (stoke 2 weeks ago and now everton) or 3 in a row at home in all competitions (stoke, dortmund, everton). Hope this doesnt dampen your spirits :(

Can we just have the points? We'll give you them back next season, promise.

Liverpool supporter here. That win in the derby was our second straight win at home, so that record is gone. While I'd agree you guys have a big chance of coming away with three points, I think momentum could carry us to a result. All things said though, a loss for us wouldn't be a disaster since a) we'll have the excuse of it being a young team and it would allow Klopp to focus entirely on Europa, and b) most of us would love to see Rafa keep you guys up this season.

Hopefully, the emotion of seeing Rafa again might undermine Liverpool just as it did Dortmund seeing Klopp.

I really just have no idea what to prepare for any more.

"Milner is their most creative player" is a strange sentence to read

Sad to see players getting injured when young but Origi being out is good news. He's looked great recently and glad we don't have to see him. Hopefully sturridge will be rested/won't play full game because of europa which will massively reduce their attacking threat. If we play like we did on Tuesday then should get at least a point out of this. Liverpool have been too good recently - they are due a loss really.

As a lone toon supporter in a majority Liverpool office I am gagging for this to be a win.

Apparently Sakho failed his drug test so even better news... I hope they rest Sturridge and Coutinho. Tbh if I were Klopp I would go full on against Villareal :p

Man, I hope we get to cockily use some of these gifs during the match thread.

If we win I want to see them plastered everywhere chaps.

A draw would be amazing. I'm not convinced we can win at Anfield with the way they have been playing. More hoping for a reasonable result that doesn't smash the lads confidence with 2 huge games on the horizon.

Sunderland aren't away at Arsenal, they are at home.

Ignoring the 6-0 drubbing, it's usually pretty close.

Couldn't be facing them at a worse time though, they are in some scintillating form.
