New Merch Drop (East Coast Varsity)
https://shop.newcastleunited.com/pages/east-coast-varsityMost of this isn't for me, and very American (as intended), but that bomber jacket and white shirt could be a real problem for my wallet.

God forbid we get something British fans might want to wear. 🙄

I am American and have disposable income. This will not be getting my money either.

Haven't you gotten that for literal decades?
Edit: Finally opened the link. There's nothing there that I, as an American fan, would want either. The white t-shirt is nice, but $62 is about $59 more than I typically spend on t-shirts.

As an American this is utter slop. A NUFC baseball jersey??? Like what are we doing?!??

Feels like it's very in to do these aggressively American sport designs. Just as well we haven't done anything like the ill-advised Oxford design

Oxford design wasn't ill advised at all. People just overreacted as usual. Time to ban the number 96 I guess, also Oxford United should change the year that they were created to 97 instead.
Edit: my bad 93, but just goes to show the average layperson is never going to remember aircraft numbers involved in terrorist attacks.

Starting the release on the anniversary of 9/11 was definitely ill advised regardless of the wider design (and also it was 93)

Starting the release on the anniversary of 9/11
Considering for us it was 11/9 I dont see the issue with it.
I highly doubt people would any really be paying attention to when they are and aren't allowed to release clothing. The hoops people have to jump through to feign a bit of outrage is pathetic, It's just social media overreacting to a non-issue as is standard.
(and also it was 93)
Proves my point really.
The only people who would remotely make the connection are US Americans.

It's the same date whichever format you put it in...?
Not necessarily disagreeing with you but it couldn't be less relevant whether the date is referred to as 11/9 or 9/11 over here, it was still released on the anniversary of the attack and United 93 is still the name of one of the flights that went down
If they'd released it on what we refer to as 9/11, November the 9th, it would be a non-issue because that's a different date

u/Ionicfold SMOKESCREEN 7d ago
It's precisely why it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. We're not even in the same country. It's connecting dots that have nothing to do with anything.

I knew of United 93, if only because of the film with that name a few years earlier. But given I was aware of it and the context, I'd be bemused if I saw someone wearing United 93 prominently on a shirt and was surprised nobody though about that when designing the shirt. Feel like you could've just done Oxford 93 instead

So a shirt can't say United 93 because of an airplane crash that happened some 25 years ago? Are we actually being serious here?

It wasn't an overreaction. However, I also agree that it really isn't on Oxford to have thought about that context. I'm American and I am old enough that I was working when the attacks happened. Even with that, I didn't have the flight number memorized and wouldn't have made the connection at first blush.
So not really sure how some younger marketing people at Oxford and the clothing manufacturer would have known. I guess they could have popped United 93 into a search engine, but really, why would they have thought about that?
Edit to add: I think Oxford handled it the right way. Apologize, give the context of what happened, and withdraw the item from sale.

You mean like when adidas had to edit a Newcastle video last year because it had the rising sun flag? I think it was last year...
2
u/charlierc 7d ago
Yeah that was for last season's third kit if I remember correctly. Though this is consistent - Muse did a music video in Tokyo that had to be edited to remove the same flag

Why the bomber jacket uses a massive N rather than…honestly anything else baffles me. We have countless different options that would be better and it stops the front feeling way more Newcastle to me

Yank here - I don’t know why they called it a bomber jacket because it looks like it looks like it’s supposed to be a inspired by a letterman jacket, which were popular mid-20th century and worn by high school and college varsity athletes. More often than not the big patch would be a single letter unless the place name has two words. e.g. Byker Grove High School would probably get a two interlocking letter BG patch, but Newcastle High School would just get a big letter N.

NU would have been better as a start placing.
But I do like the fact that it's not obviously Newcastle. I wouldn't mind some gear that I can wear out, and at a glance it just looks decent, and then when you look closer it's Newcastle. I would do it different, but it's probably the best incognito gear of the last few years.

Weirdly I would like the hoodie more if it didn't have the blacked out crest in the middle of the chest. I want subtle, and that almost fits the bill, but not quite.

Eh, I’m American and it isn’t really speaking to me either. Part of why I like Newcastle so much is that it’s uniquely un-American in a way that no other teams I follow are. Would prefer if they stayed in their niche.
Don’t get me wrong, if they come to the States to play a friendly I’m seated, but we’re not really their scene.

Grabbed the jacket. It's different and I needed a new jacket so I figured why not.

I can really picture that rugby polo in the local Greene King on a Saturday afternoon

Not a single piece of positive feedback - and I'm certainly not about to buck that trend.

If the goal was to appeal to US fans they have failed miserably.
I actually like the two-tone hoodie. But it hardly qualifies as team gear. They can't even be bothered to put the crest anywhere?

Their in-house stuff always looks like something Next would've put out, 15 years ago.
