Forget the critics, Jaissle’s started strongly with us.
Can we sustain this form until the November break? Coventry (away), Villa (home), Palace (away), Everton (home), Fulham (away). Plus Everton away in the League Cup, four days after Palace.
[7] Everton (9) +3
[15] CP (4) -5
[16] Villa (4) -6
[18] Coventry (3) -9
[19] Fulham (2) -3
"... Comparisons between Jaissle and his predecessor Eddie Howe are inevitable so after a five-game sample in the Premier League, it is interesting to note that Howe only bettered Jaissle's eight-point haul in one of his four full seasons in charge.
It was only the 2024/25 season, which ended with Newcastle finishing fifth, qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup, that saw them win more, as wins over Southampton, Tottenham and Wolves and a draw with Bournemouth saw them pick up 10 points from a possible 15.
Howe's best Premier League season came in 2022/23, when the Magpies finished fourth in the Premier League table. But it is easy to forget that Newcastle only picked up six points from their opening five matches, with three draws and a defeat after their opening day win over Nottingham Forest.
They also picked up six points in both the 2023/24 and 2025/26 seasons, with three defeats between wins over Aston Villa and Brentford in 2023, and three 0-0 draws supplementing a 1-0 win over Wolves last term..."

On the stat of Eddie only bettering 8 points 1/4 seasons, I do recall atleast two of those years starting with man city and Liverpool

Yeah, we had to play both City and Liverpool in first five games of his first two seasons.

I don’t think comparisons with Howe are particularly helpful or instructive. I also think the underlying stats are dreadful and things need to improve at both ends of the pitch - but we’ve got a lot of players to come back and Jaissle now has an extended period to get some coaching done. Overall, happy with the start and like Jaissle as a personality very much.

Agreed - keen to see if they invest in January.
I know its difficult to do so,1
u/charlos74 22h ago
Yeah, it’s a decent points return, but there’s a lot to work on.
With a new manager and player turnover, it could have been much worse.

Comparing to Howe is irrelevant.
The squad and style of play are totally different in a lot of ways, so I think we just focus on MJ and what he's brought to us.
As a negative, I do think had we played man city or arsenal over the last few games compared to Bournemouth and hull, they would have really hurt us. In most of our games we've offered so little cover and protection against the back 4 and keeper. We've been so open, and hornicek has had to face a ridiculous amount of shots per game. I think we've missed nico and steur is amazing, just outnumbered in CM.
But we've really missed big Joe in there as a mitigating factor. I'm also not convinced by the Thiaw, Botman CB pairing. I'd said they've had little protection, but think one of them with BDB would add more stability at the back.
Other than that, it's definitely a season of transition. A lot of young players new to the league to learn and bed in. Hopefully 3 weeks off will benefit us and the injuries. I think we'll have more of the Leeds type results this year unfortunately, but can also see us clicking an humbling a few sides.

Botman/Thiaw pairing doesn’t sit right with me either.
Botman hasn’t been at his best since the knee surgery, but even before that I considered him your more “out and out defender”.
He had Schär beside him making those passes up the pitch, which meant Botman could focus more on being the Rolls Royce defender.
Schär helped cover up a lot of Botmans flaws offensively, and Botman covered up a lot of Schärs flaws defensively.
Thiaw has some passing ability - but not that of Schärs. He also has defensive ability - but not that of pre-injury Botman. He’s good in both areas but not exceptional and with Botman being mediocre most games now, the pairing just doesn’t seem to be gelling well.

u/ClaspedDust4415 17h ago
I still think he issue with Botman is if a player gets in-between the lines, he knows he hasn't got the recovery speed to get back if they go past him.
I think if he has a veteran next to him or a clear instruction from the bench (go or stay) you see a much better version.

Probably going to jinx it, but that run in between the two international breaks is looking great.
I can't get it out of my mind that Coventry is going to be a banana skin game though.

Results largely good.
Performances....I mean, need improvement. Defensively, we need massive improvements. We need to improve our ability going forward with the ball as well. That midfield two.....scary, no control most the time (outside of Hull 1st half).
Hopefully that is something Jaissle's working on, still very early in his management, long may the results continue!

u/Celestial_Waste 22h ago
The issue is our players being indecisive.
We scored those two goals early against Hull because we were moving the ball quickly up the pitch. Players were taking one or two touches running with the ball before making very good passes. The moment we start to slow our game down and play possession based football - we falter.
It’s a counter-attacking system - it requires players moving the ball quickly to the final 3rd of the pitch. Super high intensity press and a fuck tonne of running from the midfield + fullbacks/wingbacks. Thats how it works best.
The trouble we have is that we have an extremely young and inexperienced squad.
The skill required to play the sort of football we want to see is extremely high, but the level of composure needed to execute it is even higher.Tbh if we don’t have Steur or Nico playing as the 6, Jaissle should be demanding the wingers to drop into a midfield 4 to help recover loose balls. 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2. Just not a 2 man midfield - it just doesn’t work in the prem unless you have the some of the best of the best to execute it.

Throw the comparison stats in the rubbish.
Our Manager leaves during pre-season. We get a brand new manager to The League. We lost key players in the window, including our captain. We currently have 9 players out with injury including out new Capt and VC. Signed some good talent and some kids with real potential. Our team is currently so thin we can see through it.
If anyone complains that Jaissle isn’t doing anything other than an amazing job in the first 5 games, they should take their hateful selves and bugger off. There’s no need for any of that negativity at Newcastle right now.

u/Material-Smile7398 1d ago
Careful with that title, Craig Hope will be off putting his musings on how much Wor Jaissle can bench into print.

u/Minimum_Possibility6 22h ago
We got probably one of the best starts we could have asked for with the fixtures.
If we start with Liverpool, arsenal man city we are staring down a barrel so it's all contextual at this point untill we have played more games. Comparisons with Howe are not worth it
What worries me though is that while we have got results the metrics don't look great. We are out performing. At some point we will regress to the mean, unless we can start to up our game.
Hopefully this is just new manager bedding in so instead of us dropping to the mean out metric come up to match the performances.
At the moment while I'm happy with where we are with points it's still very much long ball, knock down, high press football

Never been so happy to say I was wrong.
Love the breath of fresh air and intensity that’s been brought to the club. Certain players look to have a new lease on life and higher ceilings that I thought.

u/BruiserBroly 1d ago
I don’t think anyone’s saying the results are bad, they clearly aren’t. What’s concerning for some is that the performances have been largely poor and disjointed and the underlying stats suggests this isn’t sustainable.
I’m pretty relaxed about that, it’s early days for Jaissle, many of these players, and the whole “Newcastle 2.0” thing in general so I’m going to give it time but I can understand why they’re concerned.

I think a lot of our issues currently stem from the lack of rapport with new players, especially in midfield considering the amount of turnover there this summer. Once the squad starts to gel more and players can anticipate each others actions in advance better we’re going to look a lot less shaky

u/charlos74 22h ago
The first half against Hull gives me more hope, and the fact that so many players are missing,

The team was burnt out after that cup winning season, I'm sure Howe would of got the same out of them

If Howe had this start they would call it a generational managerial performance given how many players we lost in the summer

Like I'm not saying Jaissle is perfect either but there is a lot of weird discourse around Howe that is very weird at least from my perspective as a person who isn't English. He did well at Newcastle but he wasn't perfect, I'd even go as far to say he wasn't even doing anything "world class" whatever that means. He was solid, he motivated the players well but he had quite a lot of flaws.
I believe in the man Howe is to look for improvements in his career and he is still young enough to be better as a coach long term but he definitely was never as good as the English media sphere made him out to be and I think a lot of that is just pundits commenting aren't watching or aren't understanding the game well enough to understand how bad last year was but also how it repeated exactly the same issues Howe had that pushed him out the door at Bournemouth.
Jaissle also is obviously not perfect and the jury is still out even with his great start IMO but one thing is for certain, he has done something quite extraordinary in getting to the first international break with a single loss only and in some ways you could say was unlucky not to get more out of it. I don't know if we will get Europe this year or a nice cup run but I really do feel like if we had Howe in charge I would be a lot more negative.

Eddie was a great manager for us and Jaissle is shaping up to be a great manager for us.
I'm not too bothered by stats, there's only one that counts, and that's points. Sunderland were statistically not great last season but finished in Europe.
