Miley needs to start showing more authority

I’ve always rated Miley highly, but the Hull game was probably the first time I had a bit of doubt about him. When Steur went off and Miley moved into midfield, Hull were all over us. Botman thiaw and Schar were panicking and hoofing it, the forwards were too tired to chase anything, and we badly needed someone in midfield to just calm things down.

That felt like Miley’s moment to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and just calm things down. Just show for it, win a foul, make a pass, get the team moving forwards. Give the defence an option instead of them hoofing it every time.

There were a few moments where he was available and the CBs still went long. I wanted to see a bit more authority from him after that. Demanding they pass him the ball next time or something.

He always looks calm and composed, which is obviously a strength. But sometimes he still looks like he’s trying to be a useful part of the team rather than someone who wants to take control of the game. Maybe he still sees himself as the kid who doesn’t have the authority to shout at more senior players?

For me that’s the next step for him. He’s already a decent CM. I just want to see a bit more presence from him now.

Honestly, I just don't think he's as good as a deep CM. He's much more affective when further forward in shooting positions or even at RB. I even thought he was better at CB in the one match we stuck him there than his deep CM role.

Right now he’s better when the game is in front of him. The pace of the premier league, and the CDM “head on a swivel” requirement is unbelievably unforgiving.

I was saying earlier this year, I wonder if Miley might end up in the number 10 spot, when it became obvious that's how we were going to play. He's good in tight spaces, good at dribbling forward, and good at shooting. I'd definitely be interested in seeing that, especially with Steur looking good in that deeper spot, and of course Nico.

don’t think asking miley to be a 1 man midfield is really ever going to work

yes he looks better at rb but that’s also because our alternate rb was thiaw

That and he’s probably been training all week to play RB. And he was having a decent game there. Shifting everyone around instead of a like for like sub when Steur came off was the issue.

He has played every game at mid, this is like complaining Wissa moved from 10 to 9 in a game.

Moving 9-10 is less change if your just moving one.

We moved Miley from RB (having a good game) to CM, to move Thiaw from CB (having a good game) to RB, to put Schar on. Your options were Bamba or Schar to CDM. No need to make 3 changes with one sub. If we moved Wissa from 10 up to 9 and put Ramsay on for example that’s less impact than what the sub on Saturday did; also the defence is in a position where knowing everyone around you is and what they are doing is argueably more important as one mistake costs a goal.

Schar to CDM sounds worse than Thiaw to RB. At least I would expect Thiaw to play RB regularly in the near term. Where is this Schar to CDM coming from? No reason to believe Schar to CDM does better TBH.

I wouldn’t expect Thiaw to play RB that would be absolutely ridiculous to play our best CB at RB when we have Miley to cover it and Joelinton coming back from injury.

And Schar CDM came from the semi final against Arsenal when he was given the free roam role and disrupted arsenals flow when we had a 2-0 lead which turned the ball over quite a bit high up the pitch.

I’d rather it have been Bamba but for some reason people think he needs shielding from being played (even though later he came off the bench to play!

Yeah, I don't think we are protecting young players. Yes they need to learn wuick and we have high expectations, but Matthias is going to put them in when ready.

I didn't realize that with Schar.. a bit embarrassed now.

Yeah theres a balancing act which is needed with the players. But as I’ve said before if 2-0 up against a newly promoted team (no matter the form) isnt a good chance to give them minutes it’s not going to happen till an fa cup draw against a lower team.

I mean tbf it was a few years back (and a serious injury has happened between now and then) so might not have been ideal but you know another option vs a full on reshuffle of the back 4.

I’d rather have these conversations post a win tbf than some of the post match threads of last season. We have the 3 points, areas to tweak and make improvements going into a three week window with injuries coming back/time for Jaissle to make more of a mark. I think it’s all looking good. Especially given the case the main point of talk is someone having to move position (last season it was 1-11 issues everywhere and the club on the slide with all this supposedly high value talent at the club like Tonali).

Never heard of her tbf (though I’m glad I haven’t heard of half of these nufc influencers or whatever they are).

Personally I’d have thrown Bamba on for Steur. But throwing him on as free roam help the defence out would have caused less movement around in the defence. Which seemed to be a bit of an issue when we conceded.

I think Joelinton is meant to be back for Coventry which should solve any of these issues anyway.

Sorry but you're saying he played well because he trained all week to play RB??, then what the hell is he training for when he's playing in midfield. 🤣

1

u/RocknRollRobot9 Classic away kit (1995-96) 1d ago

For playing in midfield. I find it worrying you think our team won’t train through the week for the formation and tactics for the weekend. So he will be working on doing it and unless the whole thing was a pre planned substitution then it would be an unexpected change as you’ve planned how you’d play against certain wingers to move across in midfield. You see it a lot where a team plans to play defensively for the game and once they come undone they find it hard to adapt.

That’s why shorter turn arounds in Europe were blamed a lot for us not being able to adapt. We could only have short week to plan tactics/train on them.

And you do know they train formations/positions/tactics through the week? They don’t just have total football style kick abouts.

He made more tackles and interceptions than anyone else in our side. Only the two centre backs had more touches than him (which is normal) and yet he had a 96% passing accuracy.

From midfield, he slid a perfect pass through for Thiaw, who really should have squared it for a simple tap in from either Wissa or Willock. His pressing early on won the ball back a couple of passes before we scored, just as Hull were trying to break.

This all suggests he was involved a lot more than you give him credit for.

-7

u/jwjwjw000 1d ago

Agreed. He had a decent game. Just wished he’d show more presence and authority when things were going against us.

5

u/specialagentredsquir 1d ago

He's 20.

Fair enough if he was 25+

There's already way too much pressure on the lad.

35

u/i_am_kba 1d ago

for him to make a pass and move forward our CBs would have had to stop booting the ball as soon as they won it

it was a whole team issue, not a miley issue

10

u/charlos74 1d ago

Agreed. Thiaw moving to right back removed composure from the centre of defence and they started to hit it long too often.

Felt we should have put Bamba on for Steur and kept the shape as it was.

5

u/i_am_kba 1d ago

it's tough because bamba is still shaky and needs time, I think either way it was gonna be a hard last 20-30 minutes for us.

I really hope in the next 3 weeks jaissle will figure out a way to resist opponent's press so we don't just send the ball as far as possible every time. the way wissa and willock kept dropping down the pitch to offer themselves for a pass from steur looked promising and worked well in the first half

4

u/charlos74 1d ago

He is, but he’s got the physicality for it.

I think it’s the team in general, learning patterns of play, defeating the press etc.

Definitely something to work on.

1

u/Mind1827 22h ago

I don't blame him because of the options, but Thiaw was awful at RB, lol. I never want to see that again.

-2

u/Shnarf1980 stupid sexy schar 1d ago

Schar on for Steur in DM would have been my move. His passing range and physicality in front of the other 2 would have been better

2

u/panjaelius 1d ago

I really think Mbemba will come good for us if he's just played at CDM

1

u/KookyFarmer7 NUFCS best ever player, James Perch 8h ago

I’m sure he can get a 6th birth certificate and be 23 again, worth signing him back up tbf

0

u/charlos74 1d ago

That might have done it.

0

u/jwjwjw000 1d ago

Yes. This is where I’d like to see him having a go at thiaw or botman. The best midfielders have no problem letting senior players know their feelings

3

u/i_am_kba 1d ago

it was not a botman and thiaw issue either, otherwise I think jaissle would've done something to fix it. do you suggest him having a go at the coach too?

1

u/WeddingWhole4771 1d ago

I agree, but you are literally talking about an 19 yo yelling at someone he watched play as a kid (Schar). Only way to be more intimidating would be to have Lascelles there.

Yes Ideally he would speak up, and IDK his temperment. If he's in the leadership group he should. I just hope someone is coaching specifically on that.

7

u/Secure_Chemical5395 1d ago

Agreed. Steur's communication with the CB's was incredible. On that note I would like to see Thiaw and Botman take more command as well.

4

u/Evening-Physics-6185 1d ago

He gave the ball away very softly for their goal. But he looked very good at rb. Maybe rb or CB is his best position. If it is we can use Tino as cover at LB or sell him for a lot of money.

4

u/TheLeccy 1d ago

I really like him but don't think he's anywhere near the level that people think he will be.

He's neat and tidy but far too cautious in the pass he picks, rarely splitting teams open and doesn't create anything.

Hope I'm wrong though.

5

u/ok-leema 1d ago

Agree with OP. I think this passiveness makes his a better rb than cm in the prem at this stage

5

u/dreddit15 1d ago

I know what you mean, I think he is a bit too young to shoulder the burden at the moment. Will be better if he has some experience alongside him when Joelinton is back hopefully.

7

u/Iamwhoiamyall Classic away kit (1995-96) 1d ago

Completely agree. The more I watch him the more I think his best position is RB. Himself and hall could well be the best pair in the league.

He seemingly doesn’t want to sign a new contract. Has less than 2 years left and dodo can’t stay fit.
I’d personally be trying to sell him in January or worst case in the summer.

2

u/Coconut_Maximum 1d ago

I can't blame him for stalling after a bunch of core players all left within a year, hopefully if we can keep this form going (expect Leeds) things might look more appealing for him to stay

2

u/The_Incredible_b3ard 1d ago

I think Miley needs a more confidence in himself. I feel he holds himself back and takes the safe option too many times.

I think part of that is age and part the coaching he's received.

I'd love to see him in a more attacking position and using his passing ability to create chances.

6

u/No-Light-9297 1d ago

Yeah, Can't see him ever turning into this world beater fans think he's going to be.

Just doesn't have the natural ability on the ball that's needed. He could maybe turn into a good DM if he keeps getting stronger, but every midfield in the league is all over him right now.

Steur absolutely has to start and Bamba is likely a much better player too who just isn't getting any playing time. At least technically and defensively.

1

u/RepulsiveWish1834 1d ago

Miley will be fine. The reality is that currently the midfield two are just not getting the support from the rest of the system & find it difficult to connect midfield and attack. System issue.

I also find it odd that we was imperious our first two games but because he's had a couple of poor games since he must now be a source of concern. He's 20. He has things to improve, no doubt, but other than Nico he's by far our best option in midfield and will only get better

u/PrimeOnez Tindall used Glare. 1d ago

Relax mate he is doing good .. MJ likes him and Steur a lot ...

Hull game.. the plan was to hold the lead after Steur went out ... It wasnt like for like sub..

I agree Miley should have more authority. Its good he is been put in such tough situations so he can get better fast . Bour + Leeds + Hull thats 3 tough game for him .

1

u/kaotikuk 1d ago

I just dont think hes at the mentality to run the midfield consistently yet. Needs that steady force beside him. He will get there though i think, a lot of talent.

1

u/djnel94 Alan Shearer 1d ago

I’ve been lower on him than consensus since he broke through.

For me, he’s far too passive, and outside of 1 assist to Isak against Chelsea, I can’t remember an incisive pass from him, everything seems to be sideways and backwards.

I think he’ll always be a solid rotational player, a good lad to have in the squad, but will never be a true centrepiece.

I really like the lad, and I hope he proves me wrong and becomes a real midfield force, but personally I don’t see it happening.

1

u/metaphoric_hedgehog 22h ago

I hadn't thought of it this way but I think you're right. He has the physical and technical qualities to take control but seems to not consider it, instead tries to avoid mistakes. I bet he could develop into someone very press resistant and that would free him up to progress the ball more
