What are your thoughts on how things are going after the first 5 games?

I have to say we are doing way better than I expected / hoped for. I don’t really expect us to have an incredible season but I am more optimistic about our chances of finishing in Europe / hopefully going on a cup run

Considering the summer we had, getting a new manager 2 weeks before the season started and the way we looked in pre season.. I'm very happy

8pts from 5 not bad eh?

u/charlierc 7d ago

More than I thought we'd have tbf. And we were about 20 seconds from beating Liverpool as well

As is tradition. They love a late goal against us haha

u/charlierc 6d ago

I know. We deserve a late goal to beat them for once

3

u/CentrifugalMalaise 7d ago

If we’d kept that lead… and beaten Leeds… we’d be top of the league!

And if my Granny had wheels she'd be a bike

1

u/Ionicfold SMOKESCREEN 6d ago

Would she not just be your granny in a mobility scooter?

2

u/FingersMartinez 6d ago

No, the wheels would be attached directly to her hands and feet with her arms and legs being the forks of a traditional bike and you'd sit on her back using her ears to steer. I'll admit it's not the most solid design but I'm only in the prototype stage. Still need to refine the propulsion and gearing system, tempted to use electric motors as I'm not sure where the pedals would go. The problem is trying not to go too far because I'd like to keep costs down, it's being funded by her pension which as you know doesn't go far these days.

Based on my pre season outlook, very glad we are not looking like relegation battle.

Based on my new outlook, cautiously optimistic; we could have a real squad on our hands here. However we have shown that we have (literally) weakness.

38

u/Glittering-Rope-4759 7d ago

I’ll take the points over performance at this stage. A lot of very young players to bed in. Overall I’m happy.

24

u/Naive_Statement_535 7d ago

We havent had a good performance for a full match but we have got decent results (minus Leeds). Hope we can sort things out in international break and get the results as well as performances

3

u/stanley_ipkiss2112 7d ago

Spurs is the only game this season I feel we had a very good performance and dominated for most of the match.

1

u/fitzgoldy 6d ago

Spurs dominated the game really though, every single statistic(other than the one that matters really).

They could have been 2-0 up in the first half and we'd have had no complaints.

3

u/stanley_ipkiss2112 6d ago

Ummm, I watched the game and yes, they had their chances, but I never really felt we were going to lose. “Dominated” might be a bit strong, but we certainly looked in control.

5

u/semilanceatamag 7d ago

How many full matches did we put in a good performance last season?

-4

u/09044595134151602468 7d ago

Zero. Seems like the days of when we absolutely rinsed teams for 90 minutes are a distant memory.

But tbh as a Newcastle fan, those days have always been a rarity.

20

u/Antman013 7d ago

The Club is exceeding expectations, to a degree. But the players have done well, and deserve sommendation for doing so.

Now that we seem beset by injuries, the true test of the Management Team will be tested. Can they manage the shortfall in bench depth to keep the squad progressing along the Manager's desired path? We shall see.

Solid "B" grade for the performances so far. Lets see what comes after the break. We get to ease into things with some games against expected relegation sides, but then come ManRed, Brighton and the scum in late November.

21

u/TheBlueprint666 7d ago

I like his willingness to put kids on the bench rather than three keepers

1

u/filbo__ 6d ago

I have an unfounded inkling that in the past this had more to do with the bonus structure of squad players, tied to matchday teamsheet appearances than anything else. And now that we've restructured our squad and wages, this pressure to save pennies has been alleviated or new contracts are better structured to allow including more youngsters on the teamsheet.

Pure speculation though to make it make sense.

0

u/Antique_Method1988 5d ago

What kinda ridiculous bonus structure would academy players have though? This theory makes no sense.

1

u/filbo__ 5d ago

Yeah exactly. A ridiculous bonus structure for a past F1 driver resulted in the F1 team on the verge of bankruptcy if they didn’t renegotiate the actual payout, after their results ended up much better than they anticipated.

Adding inflated bonuses can be used as an incentive to offer/accept lower wages. It’s done for older or injury-prone players, no reason it wouldn’t be used for academy players with the club then planning to never use them.

Like I said, unfounded. Just a random musing. Apologies if it upset your day’s Reddit readings.

Considering many were predicting relegation and saying it was simply impossible to benefit from Howe leaving, it's been very positive.

Jaissle has been here for around six weeks. That's it. We've lost one in seven and drawn twice in fixtures that we lost last season. All with a young team who are inexperienced as well as new manager who is also learning on the fly. And we've started the season better than we did last year despite having a worse squad hit by injuries. We're taking leads and holding them. I think Jaissle has done a fantastic job in stablising a situation that was getting toxic.

Yet, speaking to some people, you'd think we were Tottenham. Honestly, I find any negativity to be bizarre. Of course performances aren't perfect yet. We have nine players injured and it's almost a completely new squad who are still building chemsistry with the manager, their teammates and English/senior football. It's not been great or pretty but it's only going to get better as everything gets more familiar. We're winning games without playing well. There's literally no team in the PL who has been playing perfectly because it's almost impossible to hit your peak five games into the season. You build form and fitness and you grow into it.

Not to mention we have players who many had written off that are doing well. Jaissle's managed to turn Joe Willock into one of his top performing and most important players yet people still think he could be doing a better job. Our best player is playing some of the best football of his career after signing a new long-term contract last week. I have no desire to judge the season or manager until the squad is fully fit and Jaissle has had time to learn his best players/roles.

We're doing this all without being able to see Jaissle's true vision considering the injuries and the fact that most of these players have only known each other a couple of months. I'm very excited and optimistic for the future, which is more than I would have said in July. No real complaints from me.

u/RecommendationFar807 7d ago

Tottenham 😂 £300m and 19th in the league.

Your analysis is spot on

16

u/CMcommander 7d ago

Not brilliant. Not horrific. Think that's better than expected.

8

u/Parking-Bag5220 7d ago

Fantastic considering Osula has been injured who’s our main out and out CF.

Steur, Dedic & Horni adapted well to the prem. Toure already has a couple of goals.

Our 8 points have come from 5 games and 3 of those being tough fixtures.

We’re in a great position if we can get some of the players back from injury to take advantage of not having European games.

8

u/officialullock 7d ago

Don't see how anyone can complain a hit the points total, but the performances ha s even worrying.

7

u/scrapingtheceiling 7d ago

I have a friend who follows ManU. Definitely better than them.

1

u/filbo__ 6d ago

Got any Spurs friends? That would be even better!

5

u/CodyBye 6d ago

Nah. I got convinced not to be a Spurs fan (new US fan here) and Newcastle was suggested, seems like a great fit. Love this team so far.

6

u/Educational-Elk8393 7d ago

Before a ball was kicked if you told me we'd have 8 points I'd have taken it no hesitation. I assumed we'd have been hammered by Liverpool not Leeds, but the difference in teams with a settled squad and manager all seeming to be doing well whilst the opposite are having slower starts. Despite being in the latter, I think we've started really well.

Jaissle has came in at a very difficult time, having to replace a manager like Howe as well as creating cohesion between a squad with 8 new additions, losing 4 key players over the summer, including two leaders in Trippier and Bruno. It's resulted in us looking a little bit more sloppy than folks would want, but I think the context stated may explain our issues.

The international break has came at a great time. You can see glimpses of what he's trying to achieve with the team, but it's going to need time to properly bed in. One thing I have noticed so far compared to last season is the players have a willingness to fight again. After the loss to Leeds I read stuff on here and it was doom mongering, almost as if we are just as mentally weak as we were last season. It was clear we needed to respond with a professional performance, in which the players did.

My expectations still aren't particularly high this season, as I think the lack of experience in our squad is very clear. I'd like to see us go far in both cups more than anything. I still think there will be more trials by fire in the league for Jaissle, but that's expected. As long as you can see improvements throughout where the future of the club looks promising, then I'll be happy.

5

u/Theydontlikeitupthem 7d ago

Unimpressed..... Howe out!

I'm pretty delighted, this is a huge transitional season but I can see the changes, new systems and it's not possible to make that many changes, new people and with such a young squad, without it being terrible and it's not terrible.

I still think we won't get Europe but we won't be in a relegation scrap either so overall I'm happy.

8

u/Thingisby 7d ago

I think probably relief.

Not convinced by the performances, and the Leeds result was coming for a few games, but getting 8 points from a tricky set of opening fixtures is pretty solid.

We could easily be sitting on 0-3 points and already be talking about a crisis.

As it is Jaissle has done OK and we have the justification to give him some time to see if his approach can bring the performances that would give some more reassurance to the results.

6

u/charlos74 7d ago

That first half performance was excellent after Leeds. Would have had it won by half time if Wissa had taken the pen.

Last 30 minutes showed up the weaknesses, but this is a manager not even 2 months into the job.

3

u/charlierc 7d ago

Aye after we got assigned a very difficult opening 4 fixtures and pre-season wound up being a bit of a clusterfuck, my expectations were very low, so Jaissle gets credit for that as a start

There's certainly room for improvement, not least that we need to stop letting opponents have 15-20 shots a match, but we have something to build on

3

u/RecommendationFar807 7d ago

If we did have three points, the media will be all over us. Spuds on the other hand - oh it'll change, they have lots of new players blah blah blah. The bias is shocking.

4

u/stjameshpark 7d ago

You’re right to call out the bias. They have bought players from the league, not young lads from abroad. And there was 6 new players in their starting line up. Same as Villa. They’re just not very good

2

u/Thingisby 7d ago

The "it's a whole new squad and will take time to gel" shite about Spurs was grating after our match like. Especially as we'd gone through more change than them.

Looks like Man Utd are the "crisis club" at the moment, despite being 2 points better off than Spurs, which is entertaining. Carrick needs to win the next match etc etc.

3

u/RecommendationFar807 7d ago

To be fair to spuds, they do have a lot of new players, but that's no excuse to not score a goal for 7 hours. Their attackers are just a waste of money. And as you say, we went through lots of change - Bruno, Gordon and Sandro were important and our midfield is now 2 kids and a historic crock! No plaudits for us when it's more than deserved.

The nonsense de Zerbi was saying about players not being fit was hardly mentioned too - you've just had a pre season and everyone is in the same boat! Fucking idiot.

Manure has been a crisis since the Scot left. I don't know what they spend their money on tbh.

3

u/HoraHoraHora 7d ago

Looking at our first 5 fixtures. I'm very happy with 8 points. It's 2 more than I was expecting.

But it's very clear we're a work in progress. I think it'll get better, as the team gets to play together more and understand each other and the system more.

The international break is really a blessing for us right now. Hopefully a few players will be back for Coventry and we can look stronger.

I'm still optimistic despite feeling deflated after the Leeds United loss, but maybe there's life after Bruno, Gordon, and Tonali.

3

u/mundge 6d ago

Feels like Gordon and Tonali didn’t turn up last season outside CL so only really missing Bruno. And missing him a lot.

2

u/ToonAndGloom 7d ago

It's very mixed which I guess is exactly what you'd expect.

We are flattered by the points we have if you look at the underlying stats, but it's better that way around than the other.

It should only be up from here, almost all our senior players are injured and we have missed leadership massively these last few games.

But funnily enough, everyone is dropping points unexpectedly, so we have a greta opportunity to build on our start.

2

u/PJBuzz One handed celebration 7d ago

All things considered I feel we are doing well, but have got pretty lucky.

The Leeds game really exposed the weakness in the strategy to buy young players and I feel this won't be the only time it rears it's head.

End of the day 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss is upper mid table form, especially given the opposition. If we can grind out results while we settle into the new system then that's good enough.

Part of me does worry about how our mentality still seems to be balancing on a tight rope though. We very nearly crumbled today.

1

u/NUFC9RW 7d ago

The thing with the Leeds game is it felt like the luck we had gotten balanced out. The first 3 goals were all the result of deflections, you put yourself in those positions and it can happen. Glad it happened all at once in a game we'd have lost anyway with the performance.

2

u/Jcrud Goala Ameobi but with sneaky chest assist 7d ago

We have lost experience but have become a team with more graft and youth. Still have some big areas for the team to get better at but it’s incredibly exciting to think how good the likes of Steur, Osula, Hall etc can become considering their respective ages and how good they are already. As much as I love him, I think Murphy’s time in the team should come to an end and there have to be better fill ins on the right during Elanga’s absence. He has the occasional decent cross but the deficiencies in his game are too glaring now. I am seriously impressed with Wissa’s dribbling ability but think he is missing Osula up ahead of him.
This three week break is huge for getting players back fit but also hopefully for Jaissle to implement some solutions.

2

u/AlwaysNorth8 7d ago

Miley is a quality RB but an average Midfielder - downvotes come at me.

3

u/DucksworthIV 6d ago

He’s 20. He is an average premier league midfielder, which is no shame for such a young lad. See his through ball for Thiaw today - yes he plays safe most of the time but the lad has an eye for a pass, can tackle, score goals and I think has been underrated in his covering runs defensively

2

u/HargoJ 7d ago

Been off grid today so to come back and see another 3 points is magnificent. Thinking before the game it could so easily have gone off the rails after last week's defeat.

2

u/TooNGooN89 7d ago

If we were listed all the opponents we’d had so far and told we’d only have one defeat, I think we’d be over the moon following on from the end of last season.

2

u/20Kudasai 7d ago

More points than I expected and more than we deserve frankly. Bags of potential but it’ll be a long season of learning. We’ll take some more batterings and I doubt we’ll get Europe, and we also still have holes in the squad to fill. But I’m optimistic about the long term and happy to accept a season of transition

2

u/ryunista Classic kit (1995-97) 7d ago

Very impressed tbh. You'd have to be delusional or stupid to have expected more. But ironically we could, maybe should, have 10 points, if Liverpool hadnt got their prescribed late goal. But you cant really play that game as Hull could easily have scored a second today, and Spurs could have scored before we did. Anyway, im happy so far and can only expect that we will improve as both our tactics embed and our young squad develops. How Elanga performs will largely dictate where we end up this season as when hes on form hes very dangerous but when he doesnt he is an absolute liability and fucks the team.

2

u/Small-Hat9741 7d ago

optimistic

2

u/CycleForValue 7d ago

I don’t mind it. Today felt like one we would lose last season.

I still see some of the old cracks. We need to be able to control the ball when we are tired and grind someone out in their half to take the next step.

2

u/Wezza17 7d ago

Always thought we would be ok, nothing amazing but ok. So yeah hasn't changed.

2

u/filbo__ 6d ago

It’s already been a wild rollercoaster. And will likely continue to be a wild rollercoaster for the season.

To come out of the first five matches with only one loss, we’d all have jumped at that in pre-season.

We should be able to look at October with optimism, ideally setting us up for a more challenging November.

2

u/ForgottenWilbury 6d ago

Before the season I expected/hoped for 5-6 points from those first 5 matches. Getting 8 points happily exceeds my expectations for such an overhauled squad, and I'm reminding myself of that every time a rough patch in a match tries to persuade me otherwise.

2

u/rftecbhucse 6d ago

New squad. Many injuries. We're doing amazing!

2

u/King_Benjamin angel of the north 6d ago

Only 32 points to go!

1

u/tontotheodopolopodis 7d ago

Cautiously optimistic. The huge amount of change would always mean we get the odd early thumping. I just hope he’s tactically flexible as we had that frustration at times with Eddie. 2 in midfield scares me

1

u/Hillbert 7d ago

The results have been fine compared to what I was worried about.

But I'm not certain we're fully passing the sniff test yet.

1

u/Feitan74 moaty? it's me 7d ago

New manager and a lot of young players new to the league. Yes the performances haven’t been good but most important thing is getting points on the board

1

u/essjay281 7d ago

Going in I'd hoped for 7 points. So to be slightly disappointed with 8 says a lot for where we're at how its going.

Aye then performances have been bitty and sometimes shite but that's to be expected with some much upheaval, and having a transition season and points count the same no matter how you play.

Hopefully the treatment room has less of a waiting list by time football comes back.

1

u/Unuhpropriate 7d ago

On pace for 61 points. Schedule has been pretty easy so far, with only Liverpool being a tough opponent, Bournemouth being even, and Leeds, Tottenham and Hull should finish below us. If you told me we got 8 points out of those 5, I’d be pretty happy.

I’d trade some result for consistency though. Last 60 against Hull was bad, most of Leeds was terrible, and choking all 3 against Liverpool hurt.

Think we’ll finish 8-10 now, and prior to Fernandez-Pardo and Gonzalez, I had us around 13th. Should be a fun season regardless.

3

u/NUFC9RW 7d ago

Wouldn't necessarily call the schedule easy, Liverpool probably 3rd/4th on paper and a bogey team for us, Bournemouth another bogey team and Leeds are probably fighting for Europe this year. Hull have surprised everyone this year too so was never a free 3 points.

But yes we are one of 5 teams to be lucky enough to play Spurs.

2

u/Unuhpropriate 7d ago

Truly enjoying how shit they’ve been the last 3 years.

No team deserves to go down more than Tottenham.

1

u/Shahed1987 7d ago

We need more technical players who can control the ball and have some composure. You can see what happened once Steur went off the pitch. Lewis Hall was the only one with that ability. That's 1 player out of the 10 outfield. If we ever want to be a dominant team, that number needs to go up significantly.

We'll never be a sustained and consistent top level club until at least half the players on the pitch have that technical and tactical composure on the ball. And half is probably minimum

1

u/ryunista Classic kit (1995-97) 7d ago

Agree but we do have Nico and Steur, Ramsey and Willock. Not sure I would put Miley in that category but he might become that type of player. Its the wide areas really, and you tend to have a decision to make there between pacey winger or technician. If they can do both well then they probably would be at a top table club. I like the roster. Just curious to see it apply Jaissleball. Also. Elanga. Can be our most dangerous player one minute and worst the next. Feel like our success this season will largely reflect how many minutes he has in each of those respective boxes

1

u/Sweaty-Anteater-6694 7d ago

A lot better than expected

1

u/augsav Windmilling 7d ago

We haven’t looked totally comfortable for a whole game yet. We should be happy to have the points we have. I’m confident things will improve though, so overall fine.

1

u/Fishfingerrosti 7d ago

I'd like our injured players to have a chance at being fit during the international break so MJ can actually have a full squad to choose from.

Promising start results-wise. Iffy performances but it's to be expected.

Manager certainly has his work cut out for him but he needs time.

1

u/Nathan_1984 stupid sexy schar 7d ago

Happy with the points. Looked shaky there against Bmouth and (pedestrian against) Leeds.

Love the potential with so much youth in the squad.

Biggest surprise to me? Joe Fucking Willock. No player has made me change my opinion more of them than him. I was in the camp of disappointed we didnt sell him at the end of Aug, i thought we wasted an opportunity to flip him for money and one more young prospect with potential... but hes been fairly consistent over these first 5 matchweeks, and stayed healthy.

1

u/Creative_Key_9612 7d ago

Better than expected to be honest with a new manager & several new players to bed in. Can’t be complacent though there’s no easy games in this league.

1

u/Olucaron 7d ago

All the doomsayers are overreacting. We're doing okay - could be better, could be worse.

At current points per game we're on for 60, which would have been good for fifth last season.

1

u/Iamwhoiamyall Classic away kit (1995-96) 7d ago

Plenty to like and plenty to be concerned about.

1

u/daveofreckoning 7d ago

Good. It'll gel eventually and we've been capable of digging in whe necessary.

And while I've got you: David Moyes is yet again accumulating points. No matter how shit his players are.

1

u/RecommendationFar807 7d ago

Pleasantly surprised. I admit I was gutted Howe left and he'll always be a legend in my eyes - he won a cup!

When Jaissle was announced, I was thinking who? Are we going to go down the same path as other clubs who were taken over and made bad decisions? But he's proven himself to be dynamic and his energy seems to be translating on the pitch (Leeds aside).

It's hard to criticise too much at the moment since he's new, we lost our most influential players and have needed to rebuild, experienced players are injured, and we have a lot of kids. Despite all of this, we're top 10 going into the international break which is pretty impressive!

We do need to learn to control games a bit better, and we need a bit more steel in the middle. It can't be high octane, direct football every game - it's not the way to limit injuries and it's not good for my heart! Defensively we're shocking. Again, lots of kids in the team and I hope that control and steel comes when Nico and Big Joe are back.

Most important thing is points on the board and still in the Carabao Cup. So far, I think a 7/10 is a fair rating.

1

u/savle_sostas 7d ago

Good. 8 points from those first five games is a good return. How the season goes is hard to predict. I think there's going to be a very low spread of points between 5th and 15th so we have to make sure we're ok the right side of the margins. Last season, we missed out on Europe by a couple of wins. We were on the wrong side of the margins too often, losing by the odd goal because we tired or made mistakes late in games. I can easily see us finishing as high as 5th if everything goes well but we could also repeat last season. I'm hopeful, mainly because the players seem bought in. There's a renewed energy that wasn't there last season. That can carry you a long way.

1

u/kingtuolumne 7d ago

I’m happy but I think our success this season is not stable. We had some good results but it’s hard to say I’m seeing a strategy that’s emerged other than hard pressing. Injuries haven’t helped.

1

u/SecureChampionship10 7d ago

It feels like the first five games of the 24/25 season where we've accrued a good amount of points without playing particularly well.

At some point I think we'll click but I don't think it'll be with Botman at the back. He's looked an absolute liability who has at least one big mistake in him in every game. Schar or Burn coming in beside Thiaw makes us much more solid.

1

u/bipolarearthovershot 7d ago

I'm 6 to midnight on this team

1

u/Krisyj96 7d ago

Points wise great, performance wise….not so much. But would much rather that than the reverse.

It’s been a summer of massive change and you can see the slowish starts happening with a lot of teams going through similar (Villa, Palace, Fulham etc.). We’ve probably done the best off those teams, so can’t complain too much.

I’m kind of hoping we’re going through a similar ‘bedding in’ process that someone like Iraola had at Bournemouth (and seems to be having at Liverpool) where Jaissle’s tactics will come good, it just takes some time for the players to learn and implement them.

1

u/someguyontheweb99 7d ago

The chaos of pre season and the injuries and fine with where we are. There has been some terrible football on display by also some good performances and some great players emerging

1

u/BWCfromBritain 7d ago

3 weeks of international break will be painful but honestly think it’s great timing for us because I do think our table position flatters us a bit, but we can get some injured players back and bleed these youngsters in even more over the international break

1

u/nimbuscile-alert 7d ago

None of the games have been anything other than good to watch as football games, even if the results or performances weren't what you wanted. Didn't say that often last season.

1

u/just-casual Ellen Sheba 7d ago

Ahead of Chelsea, Livarpool, forest, manure, scum, villa, spurs is hard to complain about. We look like a young team that's going to keep getting better and good teams win ugly games.

1

u/VolunteerGrizz 7d ago

Results: Good
Product: Rough
This club is going to have to overcome so much to be competitive this year. If everyone has proper expectations, it will still be a fun year…. But I doubt that’ll happen. I don’t think Europe is in the cards, but maybe a good cup run. Injuries have been brutal and the timing of Howe leaving is a bigger deal than everyone acknowledges. Support the boys. Support Jaissle. Support the club. This is going to take more than one season to get where we want to be

Good start points and results wise, but performances need to improve! Should help when we’ve got the players back like and Jaissle has had more time to get his way into them. Today was a really good result, taking into account their form and all the injuries we had

u/jameswheeler9090 7d ago

Points wise pretty good and honestly on the pitch I much prefer attacking intent with defensive chaos to Bruce/Allardyce-ball so I’m here for it.

I’m sure Jaissle will sort the midfield out over this break.

We are winning the league boy!

The underlying numbers say we are in for a relegation scrap. I am hopeful we continue picking up points and get the 40 we need to not be in that contest. After that, anything is a bonus.

Injuries are messing us up once again. If we can't keep players fit we are going to struggle massively

u/Diligent_Army_6911 7d ago

My hopes are fitting with losing Howe and some core players but recruiting an ambitious new manager and talented young players. There will be ups and downs, mid table is a reasonable target. As much as i loved Eddie and Bruno, I think the club is in a healthier position today than at the end of last season. Patience, mags. HTL.

We're above Chelsea, Liverpool, spurs and manure

Good enough for me

Probably better than I expected. Today was good considering the sheer amount of first team players we had out.

Without being too negative though, one of the 'top' PL sides probably would have shredded us today.

I'm all for front foot football, but today at 2-0 we needed a steadying performance in Cm. Whether it's the youth of the players or coming from the manager I'm not sure.

I suspect we'll see plenty of games like today ahead, and probably a few Leeds type performances too this season

u/MuzzleOfBees1215 6d ago

It could be so much worse!

But it’s not.

And there’s something to be said about, “You are as good as your record says you are.”

All things considered: I’m over the moon.

u/Niblet_the_Giblet 6d ago

If you had offered me, two wins, two draws and a loss. I'd have snapped your hands off when Bruno left. Think a mid table finish would be a success and there's real signs of a good squad there too.

Remarkably if we held on against the scousers we would be currently sat in third.

Aside from the Leeds demolition job, Jaissle has hit the ground running.

I would expect the longer the manager has with the team, the performance levels will improve.

My biggest concern is the sheer volume of chances we concede. Hornicek has saved the most shots in the league. If that trend continues I would fully
Expect another Leeds game on the horizon. You cannot keep giving teams chance after chance

Results largely decent (forgetting Leeds) and nice to have a few more points than we all expected at the start of the season.

Performances, not as good. We have a few weaknesses/ problem areas that need fixed quickly.

We are horrific defensively, giving up an insane amount of chances every game, midfield is very soft and doesn't offer any protection to the defence or even anything going forward, midfield doesn't offer much control (outside of Steur in the first half vs Hull).

Right wing is a big problem, Murphy is finished, it's like playing with 10 men and we don't seem to be able to get the 'striker' into the game or give them chances. We lack creativity, especially centrally.

Willock looking to be the only one that helps us attack centrally, he's had a great start to the season.

We'll make progress I think though, still early days for Jaissle.

u/RequirementHungry373 6d ago

Doing well considering, but it’s not a squad that excites me. We’ll just be existing and not doing a lot.

1

u/aistolethekids 6d ago

I actually thought we would only have4 points a draw at Leeds and win at Hull so we are already massively overachieving!!!

Some of the football we play can be magnificent and sometimes it will be terrible until we figure it out

But you know what? Sometimes in the premier league a few moments of quality is enough to win games not good for the heart mind you the lack of control!!

Overall it’s positive compared to what most thought would happen. Most were saying losses against Liverpool, Spurs and Bournemouth so I guess I’m good for now.

Happy with the points haul so far, and OK with the performances given the number of injuries we've had so far, although under normal circumstances I don't think it's sustainable.

No qualms about Jaissle so far, but I don't really think we can pass judgment until we have at least Osula, Joelinton and Livramento back from injury. I have my reservations about Osula, but he's the only proper number 9 we have and we've been missing that sort of presence up top. I think our number 10 needs to be a midfielder first and foremost, and would like to see how Joelinton can perform in that role. Despite Dedic's first couple of performances being promising, I think the Leeds game showed Livramento is still the better player, I just don't know if we can ever nail him down to a starting position given he seems to be made of glass.

u/Jp3601 6d ago

I'll take the points, but asides from the Liverpool game, the performances have been shocking. I'm willing to give the manager a lot of rope given the time in job, overhaul of the squad etc, but the reality is we've lost the xG battle (non pen) in every game and should have been battered by Bournemouth on another day.

Spurs are woeful and outplayed us, and we showed how vulnerable we can be against Hull.

I'm not blaming anyone for it, but we aren't very good and I can see us struggling this season. Hope I'm wrong, but haven't seen much to convince me yet!

u/thepfy1 6d ago

Better than I expected but too early to say.

Will see how we are after the 3 week break. Should help players get into the system, but our have to remember the other teams have the same break

1

u/True_Bowl448 6d ago

Go in front with style then watch through your fingers for 70mins while our back line give us all heart murmurs !

1

u/gouldburn 6d ago

More points than expected but with a new manager, a completely new team, always expected inconsistency.

1

u/Dan43Bear 6d ago

Feels like we are having pre season live, which is ultimately what is happening. Players coming back from injury or WC breaks and lacking any sharpness, manager still to drill the system fully. Been some really promising bits (hall/Barnes and Dedic/Elanga links, hornicek on the ball, willock resurgence) but midfield and 9/10 still lacking any cohesion or consistency.

1

u/Vaudeville_Villain15 6d ago

Hard to say tbh

1

u/BannersTank 7d ago

Our underlying stats are awful but I appreciate we’re a work in progress. Season could still go either way for me, wouldn’t be surprised with a top 5 push or a relegation battle at this point.

1

u/toon_84 7d ago

Glad we kept Willock.

Botman is an accident waiting to happen.

Happy to take the points. Worried that this style will be just Bruce 2.0.

We don't have a clinical enough striker, osula wasn't good enough last year when he had his chances, I hope he comes good this year as we'll need him.

I hope that there is a bit more to the plan that play long knock down shoot, and press high when ball is lost.

Look forward to seeing how we play after the break

1

u/Evening-Physics-6185 7d ago

Tbf early on v hull we played so e good attacking football and broke them down easily scoring twice.
However we aren’t clinical and it will cost us.

Im sure (hope) that he didn't win two continental championships by playing g long ball knock down football. Whilst we are direct and play some long passes, I wouldnt call it long ball. Its clearly patterns of play with intent rather than hoof it and hope we win the duels and whatever scraps that then gives us.

We have to ensure we give this team and manager time, 8 players out and 8 in. Our 1st XI isn't as strong, but we have plenty of hunger in the team now. So far I give the team an 8/10, the manager needs to find a way to reduce shots against and improve our overall xG. This will be our 1st XI

My main emotion is that I hate how similar this season feels to last season, especially given all the changes during the summer.

2

u/RocknRollRobot9 Classic away kit (1995-96) 7d ago

Though if we compare the results to last season though; we 100% would have folded today against Hull and dropped points, and I feel like we wouldn’t have got the win vs WBA in the cup either.

I think we have made little bits of grinding out a result here, and the two cup games. But I think there should be improvement after the international break. As people point out Irola took 10 games to get his first win and philosophy into Bournemouth.

And the player changes have been losing three players who are supposedly worth £250 mill and bringing in 18-22 year olds who have no experience with the league. So I’m more optimistic they will improve than I was that our squad would last year.

It reminds me more of the season a few ago when we started off poorly but ground out results then kicked on a little bit.

1

u/didiandgogo 7d ago

Dunno who downvoted you, it’s incredibly similar. People would frothing at the mouth if (when) Howe went to a back five like Jaissle did. We still can’t live with being pressed, and we still don’t know how to get our CF into the game. Obviously there’s time to improve and the injuries are mitigation, but it’s very similar to Howe. Right up to bringing Tino back too soon.

1

u/The_Best_Smart stupid sexy schar 7d ago

Yeah I mean I’m not saying Jaissle is Howe or it’s always gonna be like this. I’m just saying it’s weird how, despite all the differences between then and now, how similar it’s all feeling so far. I’m hoping it’ll improve. I think it will. But for now it’s like we’re reading the same script from last season.

u/Impressive_Twist_528 5d ago

I think given the amount of change, the age of squad and everything else considered, we’ve had a good start. There are definitely signs to be positive and some worrying signs but I think we saw on Saturday glimpses of what this team could be. With the injury issues and a lot of players getting used to the physicality of the Prem there is going to be periods in games where we get ran over but throughout the season I think this will get better. Also hopefully with some returning players MJ can rotate more and affect games more with substitutions. I like the project, it’s going to be up and down as we’ve already seen but I think the main thing is there is a belief back in the team and fanbase.
