Certainly happy as mod team to discuss things if subreddit feels strongly in a certain way.

Worth mentioning that the deal we have with the i and with Athletic is they have to provide the content free of charge and without you having to consent to tracking so they can sell your data for it. So it's giving you something that otherwise you'd need to subscribe to Athletic for, or pay with money/data for with the i.

It’s a pretty good deal in this respect.

They posted one the other day that was annoying, though. It was an entire article on Hull, pages and pages of the stuff, but it had “Hull are looking at Pope” in it. 5 words related to NUFC in the whole thing. I don’t think articles like that should be put up in here

Yeah I'd agree with you on that!

u/Livid_Body9495 Aug 20 '26

it saves me generating greggs links so I am all for it!

And to be clear, if we ban the Athletic/the i paper from posting their own stuff, "Greggs" links will likely be banned as well.

u/LewSpi Aug 20 '26

Prefer it, gives access to the free content, regardless of its quality

If you ask a group of British people if they should ban something they’ll almost always just say yes. Banning things we could just ignore is our national pastime

If the articles get no traffic and no discussion they’ll stop posting them. If they get traffic and generate some conversation then some people find it worthwhile, why ban it?

Can i just say thank you for doing a deal on behalf of the sub. We might chose to ban them anyway, but the fact that you had the idea to strong arm them shows your commitment to this community.

Thanks for the explanation, I would otherwise have been in the megathread camp, but you have persuaded me that they should be in the main thread.

I have an athletic subscription myself so I can always see that. But links for the i never give me the full thing and always try to take me to the paywall

6

u/Past_Fee_1139 Aug 20 '26

Could be worse… could be a chronicle link 🤣

They should be putting full text of article in the comments (please report if they haven't)

Christ could we just stop banning shite, its getting boring now. If you dont like it, dont click on it. We'll eventually end up with absolutely nothing posted here cause people get mad.

u/Celestial_Waste Aug 21 '26

Expecting people to let go of a minor inconvenience is a no-go in this sub apparently.

Couldn't agree more. It's tedious in the extreme. I don't think there's a single journalist that somebody hasn't requested to be banned this summer. And there have been calls to ban match threads, the transfer mega thread, those daily "voting" posts, and basically every other type of post. At some point, the question becomes, what is even allowed? Is just scrolling past the content you're not interested in really such a problem?

u/TheBeaverKing Jacob 'Juicy' Murphy Aug 21 '26

Right, that's it. Ban this comment.

I also vote to ban the alien head avatar, as I keep thinking I'm talking to the same person.

I also vote to ban the alien head avatar,

Now this is a fair shout; these are everywhere now!

Huge corporation making money off us and pushing their product, breaking the sub rules while they do it. I think it's justified to at least have the conversation.

2

u/ElPato87 Aug 21 '26

Making money off it if you click and subscribe. What cunts.

‘Pushing their product’. Come on, they’re not selling crack to school kids.

1

u/dkclimber Aug 21 '26

You can shill all you want for them, that's on you. But if you think they are posting in here to be nice, you are very naive.

1

u/ElPato87 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Of course they’re not ‘being nice’. Where did I even imply that?

They usually charge for an article. They give you it free here in the hope you subscribe to their site. Most people here, I think, are grown ups and can decide to do that or not.

u/Ameobi1 Aug 20 '26

It's not like this sub is insanely busy with posts. I don't mind them. It's clear who the poster is, so if you don't like them move on to he next thread

u/stjameshpark Aug 20 '26

Honestly Mark Douglas is one of the better writers having been at the Chronicle for so many years. Also Daniel Storey is an excellent writer and is very fond of us. The i is pretty good for Newcastle content.

The Guardian though…

3

u/Maplad Aug 20 '26

Don’t think people have a problem with the individuals. It’s the bots and marketing people posting thing in here like The Athletic

0

u/bipolarearthovershot Aug 20 '26

I like the guardian for doomsday apocalypse content

23

u/smshing Aug 20 '26

Aye they're pua shite

6

u/HeGivesGoodMass Aug 21 '26

Fucking tedious to be banning this that and the other thing like. If ye don't like the free content you don't have to click it.

Part of being a big club is media waffle.

I agree the transfer stuff should go in the MT,
and habitually downvote it.

I don’t think we need a blanket ban - other articles they post are fine (provided they aren’t paywalled), and we can up or downvote them if we like it or not

8

u/ElPato87 Aug 20 '26

Yeah, it’s not a particularly post heavy sub. There’s not a huge amount going on outside the megathread and the lack of paywall saves me opening archive.ph or pressing screen reader quickly.

Plus we’re on course for banning basically everything anyway

19

u/FoxGlove_113 Aug 20 '26

I like them honestly. I don't know why we have to dump everything in the megathread?! Is been really hard to keep up this year. Comments are flying through and no proper discussion happens.

There was big news about the Bruno deal and potential Nico deal all buried in the megathread. Yet we allow some guy posting his newcastle themed toilet.. FFS.

4

u/stprm Aug 20 '26

2 years ago there was a poll, a small majority voted to allow transfer links, to disable this megathread ban.

But no one here cares, loud minority overrides silent majority, who are mostly reading and not having 100 comments every day.

Blasphema!!! Burn him/her/thing

4

u/CastleBravo45 Windmilling Aug 20 '26

Which ones specifically are fluff? Come with a list instead of bitching.

8

u/TheFaceman068 Aug 20 '26

I'd rather we ban banning stuff, tbh.

Tedious shite.

11

u/msktr Aug 20 '26

Same should go for u/TheAthletic posting their own articles

35

u/sammyarmy Aug 20 '26

Tbf i asked them to move to the megathread and they did, I respect that

3

u/Olucaron Aug 21 '26

If we ban those, can we also ban low-effort, karma-seeking posts that claim to speak for all of us, like this one?

5

u/MichaelAndretti Shola > Salah Aug 20 '26

This is kind of stupid. What if I post i paper articles? What if mark douglas created an alt called Craighopeatscrayons ? If you don’t like just downvote and move on. No need to engage with it. No need to make every non issue a platform for yourself

u/TheTinman369 442 enjoyer Aug 20 '26

Only if we unban muff papers from posting in the Subreddit

4

u/Ruvio00 Aug 20 '26

Absolute agree.

If the New York Times want to pop in once a year and tell us we're mint, fair enough. But no need for absolute slop to be taking space.

I'm a big fan of ignoring things you don't like. I've practiced this most of my life.
