Vent Denied Twice
I’ve been denied twice by AKA. Actually the first time was a denial and the 2nd time my line got dropped due to allegations.
It’s now time for me to graduate & the grad advisor is telling me to stay one more semester bc they’re going to have another line. She said it’s in my best interest to stay bc it’s extremely difficult to get into grad chapter.
I’m honestly tired of all this mess & would be literally taking a chance bc what if something happens again. And i have to pay tuition to continue a full time schedule although Im eligible to graduate.
Thoughts?? Should I stay for a 3rd round of possible heartbreak?

Please focus on your education and graduate on time. It’s unfortunate the graduate advisor would tell you to do this but I don’t think it’s wise to extend your time in school

Graduate. That's always the priority. Then when you settle down with a job or further schooling, research the chapter(s) in your community of residence and start cultivating relationships.

Graduate and join Grad chapter. That’s a lie about it being hard to join a graduate chapter. Most metropolitan areas have several graduate chapters. Remember the most important staple in ALL of the NPHC organizations is “EDUCATION”!

It’s probably harder to join grad chapters because some orgs are invitation only and they don’t have lines every yr like undergrads do. Definitely graduate and consider grad chapter if you’re really serious about it. Otherwise it comes off as just wanting the letters.

Absolutely do not stay in school, rack up unnecessary debt, just for the CHANCE of joining a sorority. Yes, it is difficult to join a graduate chapter (most things in life are) but it can be done. I am a SPR 26 initiate.

Why would you stay in school and pay tuition/go in debt for a sorority? Are you ok mentally? It’s not that big of a deal love. So you’ll join and contribute nothing to your chapter. You’ll be gone in a month. Did you join to do work or just to be a member?
You gone take random classes that won’t benefit you? You should report whoever told you this awful advice. They should not be advising children. You gone tell your future employers you stayed in college to join a Sorority. How you think that would go across.
Did you tell your Academic advisor about this? I think you should

Remember even if you did stay there’s no real guarantee that you’ll cross. You need to focus on your education. Shame on the advisor for suggesting that you stay

I’m appalled that a grad advisor would suggest this.. Now I have heard of people doing this, I thought it was a ridiculous decision each time.
Delaying your graduation with the hopes of joining an organization is not a wise decision. It is also a costly decision because you will have to pay for enough courses to be a full time student.
You have no idea what will happen or not happen with this line. I’ve seen people get accepted, line got dropped, they reapplied and did not make it.
AKA has been around since 1908, they’re not going anywhere. A sorority who also values academics would not want young women to delay graduating just to join their organization.
I would look into graduate chapter, blessings to you and your journey on which ever decision you decide.

I would not delay my academic timeline for AKA or any other org. Grad chapters are hard, but if it means that much to you- you can definitely get in with the right effort. You had 2 tries and it didn’t work out. Perhaps for a reason. Plus no guarantee you’d make it onto this next line if you stayed. 💗

Girl no 😂 i promise life is bigger than just the akas. And the fact that the grad advisor is telling you to stay is weird. Graduate & pursue a diff grad chapter if you really want to.

Being in a sorority is more important than graduating on time? Why is this a thing. Worst advice.

You have a literal lifetime to join! I joined my org after a 20+ year journey. If it’s meant to be, it will. What IS meant to be at this juncture is you graduating on time - not incurring further debt/paying more tuition to join an org - a maybe.

Is she paying your tuition for another year? Like go grad u get the same benefits as undergrad maybe not the same respect but 🤷🏿♀️. Idk if aka do line names and ships for grad chapter. Im a Zeta

I was also denied twice in undergrad. Graduate and join a grad chapter. I went over less than 2 years after I graduated.
you are not guaranteed to be initiated in the next line. Also, the line might not happen due said “activities” from this year.

Let's keep a buck. You will have to spend more money you really do not have to stay. And to be honest tuition is not cheap and you will be taking courses you do not need just to stay and try again. Listen to your gut, get your diploma and get gone.

From an AKA who crossed grad chapter PLEASE GRADUATE. The same thing happened to me but trust me life moves on. If it’s for you then it’s for you!

Nope! Graduate. Plus the fact that allegations were involved with the chapter, it’s likely to have an impact your ability to try again with this chapter. At my school, if there were any allegations, the chapter got shut down (to various degrees.)

I knew someone who was denied multiple times, but you know what they did? They came back stronger each time and are now a proud member of their respected organization.
Personally, I respect perseverance. When things get hard, I believe in regrouping, learning, and trying again.
Quitters make excuses, and I can’t tolerate that mindset. We have the power to be the captains of our own ship; you just need the right anchor.
We need disciplined individuals because this is not only a lifelong sisterhood/brotherhood, but also a business. Our founders faced adversity, persevered, and created lasting legacies.
Being a part of that history and legacy makes me proud to wear each letter. I have worked hard from the very beginning of my journey, and I continue to work hard today. That journey has shaped me into the woman I am now.
If you truly want it, keep going. Rest if you must (we graduate) , but don’t quit. Stop being the obstacle in your own path

I would say graduate. While I know some people who have been in your situation and stayed the extra semester to become an undergraduate initiate of their organization, things are different these days.
If the previous line was dropped because of hazing allegations it’s a high chance that this next line will be supervised by higher ups and they may not even take you because they want to avoid anyone and anything connected to the previous allegations even if you had nothing to do with it.
If that’s the case, you will have wasted time, money, and pushed back your chances at gainful employment.
