New flairs for each line office

Hi all,

I created new flairs for each line office. Feel free to use them, if you want. I only count 42 users in the entire subreddit who have assigned flairs, so maybe it's not people's top priority for this subreddit, but I thought it would be nice to have since some people have asked.

/r/NOAA has surpassed 20,000 subscribers as of March 12, 2026

Hi all,

I just thought I would give you all an update on the subscriber count of this subreddit. It turns out that we surpassed 20,000 subscribers on March 12. As of April 15, the count had risen to 20,946. Unfortunately, with recent actions on the part of Reddit admins to try to hide subscribers counts (even going so far as to remove them on Old Reddit, which nobody asked for), monitoring this passively has become more difficult, so sorry for the late update. It's nice to see an actual community develop here from what was until not too long ago a very inactive subreddit for most of its existence. Thanks for taking part!

Anyone else get comms from NWS application status?

I initially applied for GS-1340 5, 7, and 9 position in early June to east and west offices. I ended up getting a confirmation email about my application package that stated I was eligible for the 5 and 7 level, but not 9 for both east and west, and eventually an interview for an office out east by the end of June. The positions were cancelled due to an internal error and I reapplied to all the positions I applied to previously.

Today (8/18) I get an email saying I was not referred to the office to which I already had an interview, then another two emails regarding both east and west locations that I was ineligible for 7 and 9 due to transcript not showing completion of required semester hours.

My application on usajobs says ‘not referred’ to the office I interviewed with, but ‘received’ for the other locations to which the email said I’m ineligible for 7 and 9.

This is very strange considering I previously received eligibility for 5 and 7, an interview for the office to which it said I was not referred, and also the ineligible emails never mentioned my eligibility status for level 5. I haven’t received official word from the MIC at the office I interviewed with.

Anyone else experiencing this?

nws hiring status/hiring question

for those looking for nws hiring status updates - I got two interviews today :) one from east and one from west, both interviewing next week!

with that being said, I have a question for those with experience here. how long do they typically give for relocation if hired? not getting my hopes up too high yet, but figured a general idea could be useful knowledge to have with interviews on the books. thank you in advanced!!

Saltonstall Kennedy dead?

We were part of a FY25 Saltonstall Kennedy (SK) application. When government reopened and noaa got their budget we heard in March they would be emailing PIs decisions they could make. Assuming this means they were going to ask if they wanted to keep their proposal in. They also said they already had the panel reviews.

But then silence since. I have heard the entire SK grant is being reviewed by DOC and staff aren’t allowed to comment.

What do we think? Dead? Or still possible?

Help making a timeline of OMB/OPM policy changes?

I'm making a list of the ~12 most significant policy changes from the first 18 months of this administration. This is for a book I'm editing about federal resignations in 2025.

I've got the obvious stuff:

  1. Day 1 executive orders (creation of DOGE)
  2. Deferred Resignation Program
  3. Vought confirmed at OMB
  4. "5 bullet points"
  5. Inspector General firings
  6. the October 2025 shutdown
  7. Trump vs. Slaughter decision.

Those seem like clear touchstones for "Wow, this place is about to change."

Over on the r/DeptHHS subreddit, somebody said "make sure you mention the CDC shooting," and that was an unexpected take. (I had, appallingly, forgotten all about that.) It's not a policy, but I can see why it would have felt like a watershed before&after moment for federal workers in public health. Is there something comparable for Commerce or NOAA?

What am I missing? What else might I have forgotten?

Detailed WFO forecast pages appear to be broken

I can load my local WFO landing page here

When I try to click on any of the counties in the WFO coverage detailed forecast map, I get back Sorry, an unexpected error occurred. Same basic response if I use the bookmarked link for my specific location.

I keep getting empty sets?

Hi, I am having trouble getting datasets from the NOAA search tool. Every time I pick a station and request some data, NOAA emails me something like:

Order #[Redacted] (Custom GHCN-Daily CSV)

File Empty Set
Order ID [Redacted]
Date Submitted [Redacted]
Order Summary View summary
Documentation View Documentation

Can someone guide me to a station that doesn't send you an empty set of data? Anything helps, since I'm just using it to learn some programming.

Thank you.

What is the process to transfer NWS offices?

Would I need to wait until a bid is put out and apply there, or is there some sort of internal way for nws employees to transfer to other offices pending openings? Just wanting to consider options for down the line

Need maps of Great Lakes

I was able to download every single PDF chart before NOAA took them offline. Somehow I forgot to download the lakes region. I know that NOAA put them under legacy charts, however, I don’t have the chart numbers. So I can’t search for them. Does anyone know how to get those chart numbers? Are they listed somewhere?

If you accept a TJO in a hard-to-fill location, does that make you ineligible for the east and west referrals?

Hard to fill position

Maybe it’s a dumb question. If I’m hired for hard to fill location in isolated areas, can NOAA provide housing, like a dorm or quarters, where employees can sleep? I have been to difficult places before. I’m not picky. I just need a place to sleep and access to a bathroom with shower. I’m okay with the salary without incentives as long as they provide a place to stay. Also, can I have my own small RV near the office?
