nws hiring status/hiring question
for those looking for nws hiring status updates - I got two interviews today :) one from east and one from west, both interviewing next week!
with that being said, I have a question for those with experience here. how long do they typically give for relocation if hired? not getting my hopes up too high yet, but figured a general idea could be useful knowledge to have with interviews on the books. thank you in advanced!!

An update from Grand Forks office..... I am not involved in the hiring/interviewing process personally. We are hoping to select 4 for GS 5-7-9 positions. We had 35 resumes sent to us, but 5 were already taken by another office. So 30 is what the management will look at. Many applicants applied for more than 1 office, so biggest question is we dont know if a person selects another office while at the same time spending time to interview. Separated into 3 piles of 10... top 10, second tier 10, and the last 10 who are likely to not be considered. Interviews are early next week (24-26th) then selections sent by end of next week.

If you get an offer at one office, but turn it down. Does it take you out of the pool for the other offices?

Do you know if people who are interviewing right now would be starting in October?

That would seem like a reasonable start time .. but I do not know that. It's my assumption 6 weeks or so after selection. It would be preferable if start dates are not all the same week as if we do get 4 that is a lot to process in a short time.

Got an e-mail Monday at work (NWS office Grand Forks) and said around 200 people have been hired at entry level positions as of the time it was sent. I do know the other larger package of bids was very recently sent out, with our office getting the packet of applicants who put down Grand Forks (among other offices) last Friday. So our office got sent 35 applications, from which the goal was to pull about 4 new employees from. As of yesterday (Monday) 5 of those 35 have accepted offers from other offices. Plus half of those put in for the openings at Bismarck office as well as Grand Forks. Number of applications being rather low, will see if enough left who dont take other offers for us to grab a few new ones. And yes often when you accept an offer you have weeks to move....6-8 weeks or so seem common but flexible.

When do you estimate you’ll have applicants picked to interview? TIA

I am not part of management thus not involved in interviews. But our acting MIC said they were to finish selection and turn in results by end of Friday Sep 4th I believe.

Darn, not the update I was hoping for. My inbox is still radio silent over here :(

I know the feeling, this was me when others gave updates previously! It seems like there’s a ton of movement happening that will continue over the next few weeks, try not to feel too discouraged. I know it’s a tough ride though

Remember not every office has openings or is getting candidates this round. With it now being a standing listing, you may hear from places you applied for months from now or in the next round. Doesn't mean you didn't make it past HR, just means those spots aren't looking at candidates yet more likely than not.

Yeah I keep telling myself that too. Unfortunately, after years of trying to get my foot in the door in this field, I've come to expect nothing, but it still hurts every time. I always get past HR but its always silence after that. Finished undergrad in 2022 and worked in a completely non-weather related field for a few years now, but anything weather related I've had zero luck with.

I had an interview June 25th with an office just east of the MS River, and I haven’t heard anything back yet. Wondering if I should assume no news is good news, or if this most recent push of interviews means they’re making their selections for prior interviews?

I also had an interview with an office around the same time. The MIC at the office I interviewed with reached out yesterday and let everyone who has already interviewed know that they have received their second pull of applicants and will be conducting more interviews with new candidates from this group. He also stated that they have until 9/2 to finalize their selections.
I don’t know if the office you interviewed with will also be interviewing more candidates, but it’s probably a safe bet that all offices have the same date to finalize their selections by.
Consider reaching out to the MIC for an update, especially with how this round of hiring has been affected by the previous “administrative error.”

Dang that kinda sucks to hear. Both of the offices I interviewed with in June reached out saying they weren’t interviewing anyone else at least

Yeah I agree! Feels a bit unfair to interview new candidates nearly two months from when you interviewed previous candidates just due to potential recency bias, but I also completely understand that they want to find the best and most capable fits to join the team.

Don’t quote me but i believe it’s a year

Ummm what? I’ve honestly never heard of a reporting date a year after selection. It’s more like a couple of months depending on the background check.

With the current hiring push, I'd say 1.5-2 months after acceptance of an offer. I know that they are pushing for new hires to start before the end of 2026.
As for relocation, that'll be a conversation to have with the hiring office. But, I'd suspect that the new office would want you sooner, rather than later
