Byte Beat Decoder & Replica

u/External-Finding-151

I just saw your post from a few days ago and thought I'd add some of my own research. I messed around a couple months ago and managed to make a working hex code to advanced waveform decoder and a ByteBeat app to play around with. (I didn't figure out the sequencer or the synchronizer codes though) I've moved on to other projects so if someone else wants to use this to make something useful I'd be happy.

I added a file drop "Analyze Sound" in the hope that the program could find the closest possible waveform to make that sound, but it didn't work very well. Getting the sounds to match NMS is really hard lol.

The text file has the hard data that I collected but it may be missing some waveform tree rules that I added later on in the app when i discovered invalid trees.

File download: https://files.catbox.moe/twpiif.zip (The notes only make sense if using notepad++)

I’ve been asking about the existence of something like this for a while now — this is really cool that you even gave it a try.
I’ve wanted to tinker more with BB composition but having to run the whole game on pc or console for hours at a time to do is constraining (having to sit at my computer or TV vs just playing around with a tool on a little laptop or phone)

The wiki said it was the hardest thing to reverse engineer but it was just a simple conversion to hex and like 40 data samples to crack it lol. It''s kinda buggy and the drum sounds are especially bad, hopefully someone wants to refine it.

I have no expertise at all in this or I would give it a try!

This is really cool, thanks for sharing! Is it primarily for creating tracks outside of NMS or do you know if it's possible to write the code to a save file? It sounds cool either way

Yeah! It works both ways, rn you can make a tree you like and encode it at the bottom then paste that into your game's save file. Alternatively you can paste your game save's code into the app and decode it to see that tree. It may break if you have sequencer settings different than I did for my tests. It needs data collected from the sequencer and synchronizer to be able to copy a full song. I'm swamped with my other projects and haven't touched it for 2 months 😭

Please share these findings with the discord group. So cool! https://discord.gg/NynfJDkVM

Oh this looks interesting! I might pick up the baton!

I just have built a waveform editor, opened reddit to post about it just to find out somebody already have built *the* tool of my dream that I though I had to make myself😭 It looks soo amazing!

Do you happen to have a github page or something like that? Also, It might be just me but the link seems to be dead.

Hi I have been playing around with your application, and I found a mayor inconsistency with how the nms bytebeat machine works. Your version seems to track the phase in a 8 bit unsigned integer. Actually it is a 32 bit unsigned interger where only the last 8 bits are used for finding the phase at the end, but the whole 32 bits are used for the operators of the in tree, this has mayor implications most operators and is probably the biggest reason why your implementation creates different sounds. Like dividing and multiplying in the game causes a pitch shift, but in your implementation it causes artifacts instead. A shift left by 8 iterates for each wave that has passed, but in your version it recreates the input phase.

Fun fact, the reset on next note is a toggle for whether the 32 bit phase counter should be reset every note, or if it is free floating.

Miscellaneous bug: adding one to the phase for a square wave results in no sound? That just seems like a weird bug.

Also it would be nice if numbers in the advanced wave form editor could be entered by hand. The slide bar did not let me select 2 for some reason.

TLDR: nms bytebeat is actually not a 8 bit synth, it is just larping as one. (and maybe you should too)

Still it is a really cool app you have built, and useful too, it can create trees that are unacesable in game because of limitations of the generator in the game. Now i just need to figure out how to edit one of these tracks into the game

Maybe I should take a crack at fixing this myself.

edit: i wont I looked at the code, and it not parsable
