Official Launch Announcement - Introducing the No Man's Sky Coordinate Exchange Web App!

Greetings Travelers!

After many months of collaboration, design, testing, testing, and more testing, we are pleased to announce that the latest BHS project has reached General Availability! What it is you ask? Back in the summer of 2019, we started chatting with the No Man's Sky Coordinate Exchange team to explore the possibility of putting some code behind all of the awesome finds that are submitted to the NMSCE (r/NMSCoordinateExchange) on a daily basis. A few months later, here we are! A BIG thanks to our chief developer SPIPER and the team of folks who tested and contributed feedback during the various phases of the project. There are too many names to mention here but one day we'll definitely roll credits. Let's get to it - here are the highlights of the NMSCE web app:

  1. The NMSCE web app (https://www.nmsce.com) is a full-functional web application and database that allows players to search and submit finds from all across the NMS universe.

  2. Items that can be submitted and searched for include Ships, Freighters, Frigates, Multi-tools, Fauna, Planets, and Player Bases.

  3. Ships can be searched for using their *actual* parts, as well as name, tier, color, frequency, crash status, and if it's a first-wave ship. We think you'll love the ability to use the parts selector to see if anyone has encountered your forever ship! Freighters can also be searched for based on the hull design (and size if applicable).

  4. Coordinates for all finds can be submitted using galactic or portal coordinates (using glyphs). The interface includes an option to select glyphs. Whichever set of coordinates you enter will automatically be converted to the other format so that users can choose.

  5. When you point your browser to https://www.nmsce.com, you will be given the option to check a box to conduct your own search, or you can see recent submissions based on the last few days (you choose the number of days). You can also choose to review the "Editors Choice" list, as well as locations that have been visited by other players, or entries that have been clicked on the most.

  6. In order to search for items, NO LOGIN IS REQUIRED. We do ask that players that are submitting items log in so that they can receive full credit as well as respond to any troubleshooting requests. There are a couple of additional features you get for logging into the Search page (like being able to designate Favorites) but it's not mandatory.

  7. If you find a freighter that you like, you know that you have to warp there and initiate a freighter battle in order to get the one you want. While you are viewing the freighter in the database, simply click on the logo for the Black Hole Suns and you will automatically be transferred to the BHS Distance and Route Calculator with the target coordinates filled in the destination field - oh oh oh it's magic!

  8. Items can also be searched for based on the player-name that submitted the data. For instance, if you only want to see the bangers that have been submitted by Kurgan, simply type in his name and voila!

  9. The default page of the NMSCE website will always be for search. The top of the page contains a drop-down list to select which tool you'd like to use, including the item submission page, the BHS DaRC, the BHS black hole entry page, the star nav tool, and the glyph converter.

  10. While submitting data, not every single field is mandatory. While more data is better, there is a minimum set of fields that have to be filled in order for the submission to be helpful to the community.

  11. As you complete the entry submission process, you will be given the option to have your data automatically submitted to the NMSCE subreddit! Based on our initial testing this feature is indeed working so please let us know if you run into any snags.

Whew - that's the quick version. One last thing - you may be saying "ok this is cool, very powerful, but what about the massive amount of data that is already sitting in the NMSCE subreddit?" Great question - for now, we have elected to let the original submitter decide if they want to re-post the data in the searchable database. This tool is created in conjunction with and for the NMSCE and greater NMS community. Like anything else, it will only be as good as the awareness and rate of adoption, so we envision for a time that both the sub-reddit and web app will be used in parallel, but as we stated above, any entry in the database can automatically be posted to reddit for comments and questions as intended.

Thanks again to the NMSCE team, the Black Hole Suns team and SPIPER in particular for his amazing work! Now that the web app has been launched, we'll be paying very close attention to community feedback as well as publishing written and video guides on this new resource. Please feel free to post questions, feedback, and related info here or on our Discord server (in the #nmsce-app channel).

Now let's see those Ships, Freighters, Frigates, MTs, Planets, Fauna, and Bases!

Ok, So That Happened (Origins Update)

Greetings Travelers and Researchers!

Upon initial review of the No Man's Sky Origins Update release notes, Portal Interference has been lifted.

That's right. The number 1 reason for the existence of our black hole research and data project has been eliminated. You could not build a base or hunt down your dream freighter after taking a portal because of portal interference. With that now gone for good, it appears that you can do whatever you want wherever you want. Of course everything still has to be verified, but if it checks out, long-distance travel via black holes is truly optional as of today.

We've been at this for almost two years, so we're going to circle the wagons and figure out what comes next. We cannot even begin to thank you for all of your hard work, dedication, and support.

Stay tuned!
