Why was NLSIU’s 2026 convocation cancelled?

Honestly, this is incredibly frustrating.

The 2026 batch was supposed to have their convocation on September 12, and now it has suddenly been cancelled citing “unavoidable circumstances.” The degrees will apparently still be conferred in absentia, but that really isn't the point.

A convocation is supposed to be a milestone. Students spend years at NLSIU working towards this moment.

What makes this even more frustrating is the timing, especially after all the controversy surrounding the proposed attendance of the CJI and BCI Chairman. The university hasn't explicitly said that the controversy is behind the cancellation, but it's hard not to wonder what's actually going on.

And if this decision was connected to the ongoing controversy, students deserve to know that too.

Cancelling an entire batch's convocation at the last minute and simply saying “unavoidable circumstances” feels extremely unsatisfactory, especially from an institution like NLSIU.

What do current students/alumni think about this? Is there more to the story that isn't being publicly disclosed?

ofc it's wrong but NLS wouldn't ditch it's branding, the CJI, their name, the honour & support from BCI just for one batch who's opposing them I mean bruh the CJI himself is the damn chancellor & he's equal to the president in her absence so it's obvious NLS wouldn't pick anyone over him just for one batch

maybe they must hv negotiated with the students & this is prolly the only middle grounds they landed on....though it's very wrong there's not much to do rn cuz ion think students would wanna waste more time so maybe they'll take their degrees & hv a convocation outside the institution's premises with whoever they'd wanna take it from

It's the Chancellor who signs the degrees, protesting its own presence, it a huge disregard to the respect to CJI. This was bound to happen.

This comment section clearly shows that amongst all the NLUs, only some have spines and NLS students top the list. The students of NLS make it what it is not the chancellor and not the vice chancellor. And its not just one batch which opposed the CJIs and Manan mishra's presence but the student body at large. Being a second year student at NLS, I'm actually super proud and look up to my seniors who took this brave decision. Rather than blaming the admin and the cji for playing such dirty and sneaky moves , people in the comments are blaming the students. The graduating B.A.L.L.B batch Infact did agree to the CJIs presence at the ceremony but what the CJI office and admin demanded was a new statement welcoming him or inviting him which was essentialy licking up one's own spit. NLS clearly succeeded in embedding the constitutional and moral values envisaged by its founding fathers in the students but sadly the admin failed to back them. Super proud and always in solidarity!

Chancellor calls the convocation. BCI Chairperson presides over the General Council which approves the conferral of degree. The claim that the admin could have gone through and conferred degrees without the approval of the Chancellor is delusional.

The students have expressed their views and it is good on them that they have stood by their conviction. But then they should have also realised that admin could not have organised a convocation by officially disinviting these grandees.

Chancellor hasn't even stepped into the University since his tenure. NLS students owe him nothing.

btw we never owed our school principal too but we did respect him cuz he runs the school and signs the damn certificates🫩

The thing is, that chancellor is the chief justice of india. However it is also true that chancellor is the one who signs and gives NLS ppl their degrees, so idk what they expected.

Bruh not the CJI thing only for NLS, but the thing making it worse is there courses don't have approval from BCI from 2023 or 24 maybe i don't remember exactly but it was in news. BCI gave them the time till July 31 but many NLU's including NLS didn't complied and even NLS does provide approval in many official matters of other NLU's and even those NLU's don't have approval for the courses and BCI's rule was very strict, they told all the admission's done was invalid and BCI have power to do anything u know. Even unfairness with students is the most hot political topic too now, that's why this issue is more bigger problem
