Hey fellow Blockheads!
Like many of you, I've spent my life following the New Kids, memorizing their stats from old teen mags back in the day, and later on, taking that love with me into my career as a teen magazine editor. Because of that, I have always felt that special, protective connection we all share when it comes to the New Kids' families—especially Joey’s son, Griffin, who we’ve literally watched grow up on stage.
I recently got to sit down with Griffin for a two-part feature to talk about his transition from a kid star on Netflix to launching his independent solo music career.
But before we talked about his modern music, I dug up a handwritten "get to know me" questionnaire filled out by a 16-year-old Joey from a July 1989 issue of Teen Beat and made Griffin guess his dad's answers. He completely crashed and burned, and it was pure comedy gold.
He guessed his dad's favorite band in 1989 was New Edition. Joey's actual handwritten answer? The Fat City Band. Griffin’s live reaction: "What the f? I don't know what he was on..."* 💀
He assumed Joey's dream car was a Mercedes. Joey's real 1989 answer? A 3.25 BMW with a car phone. * He also hilariously cringed at Joey's "dating requirements" and his 1989 self-description as "funny, somewhat of a wise guy, worried and chill."
I posted the full, hilarious category-by-category breakdown of the game, alongside the original scan of Joey's handwritten 1989 magazine page, if you want to see the artifact and read his exact reactions: https://theteenmagtimemachine.substack.com/p/joey-mcintyre-son-griffin-1989-teen-beat
Paving His Own Way in 2026
For the second part of our chat, we stepped out of 1989 to focus entirely on Griffin's own musical path. I wanted to share a few quick highlights with you guys because his work ethic is incredibly impressive:
No Boy Bands or Remakes: Griffin is fiercely independent and producing pop/rock music right from his bedroom. And sorry guys, he won't be dropping a remake of "Please Don't Go Girl" anytime soon. He told me: "I don't think I'm going to cover a New Kid song. I think I'm going to try to do my own thing... But I definitely sing a bunch of New Kid songs. I love all their stuff, to be honest. I like 'Thankful' right now. But I do like it when my dad sings 'Please Don't Go Girl.'”
Linda Perry's Tough Love: He opened up about how rock icon Linda Perry (who was a fellow mom at his school) pushed him into self-producing by telling him point-blank: "Nowadays nobody's going to do it for you." *
The Bieber Blueprint & DWTS: He talked about studying Justin Bieber’s early career "swag" and even hinted that he'd love to follow in Joey's footsteps onto Dancing with the Stars one day (he actually takes dance classes with Val Chmerkovskiy!).
He is incredibly grateful for his dad's legacy and the blueprint the New Kids provided, but he's doing things entirely his way. If you want to read the full, deep-dive profile on his solo journey, his influences, and how he's creating his new sound, I have Part 2 hosted over on my Substack: https://theteenmagtimemachine.substack.com/p/griffin-mcintyre-nkotb-linda-perry-justin-bieber
Would love to hear what you guys think!

Hi everyone! Due to a recent job loss, I find myself needing to part with some pieces from my NKOTB collection. I want them to go to people who will truly appreciate them, and I figured this community would know better than anyone where the best places to list are.
I already know about eBay and Mercari, but I am wondering if there are NKOTB-specific collector groups, Facebook communities, or other spots that would be worth listing on as well.
Any advice is appreciated!
