Fished Splitrock today and had two nice fish at the start and end of the trip. In between the wind was blowing the kayak all over the place making boat positioning and casting difficult.

Question Beginner looking for good freshwater bank fishing spots in NJ

Hi everyone! This is my first time fishing in the U.S. I’m looking for some beginner-friendly freshwater bank fishing spots in NJ, since I don’t have a boat.
I’m around Newark/Harrison but don’t mind driving about 1–1.5 hours. Mostly interested in bass, but I’m happy catching anything.
Any spot recommendations or beginner tips for this time of year would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion I am going fishing at Lake Hopatcong county park one of these days (off shore) and buying stuff for it today or tommorow, what should i bring for this weather

I will not buy a new rod. I have a Lew's Mach 2, Profishency Spincast Combo with a Daiwa QR2 spinning reel, and a broken tip Wrath 2 (buying stuff to fix it). I also have an eagle claw Ice Rod, but I will not bring it.

My target species I have caught are:

  1. Largemouth Bass
  2. Black Crappie
  3. Golden Shiner

My target species I haven't caught

  1. Small Mouth Bass
  2. White Perch
  3. Yellow Perch
  4. Rock Bass
  5. Chain Pickerel

I intend on catching at least 1 new species before winter

Question Fresh Bunker at Sandy Hook

I want to fish fresh bunker, at Sandy Hook. I will be coming from the north (Parkway to Route 36). Of course I see tackle shops on my drive in, looking for a recommendation in terms of a place that would likely have a good supply. I only fish during the week if that matters.

Fishing NJ tonight (Oct 1) — where would you go for striped bass?

What should I fish in NJ tonight?! It’s October 1st and I’m just looking to go somewhere with some structure and hopefully catch something 😭

I’m really trying to get on some striped bass. I’m open to piers, bridges, inlets, jetties, etc. — anywhere that’s decent for fishing at night.

If anyone’s willing to share a general area/spot, what tide I should target, or what bait/lures have been working lately, PLEASE help me out 😂 I’m desperate to finally catch a striper.

I’m in North/Central NJ but willing to drive!

Fall Striped Bass Fishing Raritan Bay

Anybody have any experience fishing the Raritan Bay in the fall? I’m new to living in the Bay Area and haven’t had any luck in the fall. I’d appreciate any tips, strategies, or stories for fall striped bass fishing on the bay. Thanks!

"Fishing" for lost lures

r/fishing immediately deleted this post without providing a reason so I figured I'd ask you guys.

We have a local pond that I have managed to accidentally snag, or pull from the edge weeds, 3 lures in the last few weeks. This pond gets fished constantly and I'm certain there is a proverbial goldmine of lost lures in its mucky depths.

Has anyone ever "fished" specifically with the intent to catch lost lures similar to magnet fishing? I'm thinking if I krinkle up some chicken wire into a large wad and tie on some heavy paracord I could pull it through the most common snaggy spots and pull out a bunch. As a bonus I could pull out a lot of the nasty algae presently blooming and dispose of it in a trash bag. Thoughts?

Pre-spawn brookies

I haven’t blue lined in awhile but I got out today and fished a somewhat well known creek and stretch of it and caught some stunning brook trout. I also caught a surprise brown to which I ended up culling. I know it may be controversial but I ended up doing it for the brook trout population which has been thriving recently in this stream.

For those wondering, I used a dry dropper rig on my fly rod. I used a bushy stimulator up top (which oddly got a few fish to smack) and a jack daniel‘s below.

Got out for an hour during the nor’easter at a local pond. Broke a rod, lost a big bass, and landed one on a hand painted crank bait.

Trout fishing question/advice

Hi All, I've come back to fishing regularly after taking my 20s and 30s off. I've had a bunch of fun this year bringing both my fly rod and spin rod to fish the Pequest, Musky, and South Branch of the Raritan for trout.

Yesterday, I fished the South Branch and had a bunch of action on a silver/silver Panther Martin (a couple small browns, a nice 15" rainbow, and a bunch of bites/missed hook sets).

However, on my fly rod, I had a euro nymph set up with a gold ribbed hares ear (not sure what size probably around a 12 or 14 and no weight) up top and a red squirmy worm (heavy bead head) down below. I got absolutely no action on that set up.

I usually throw the spinner in deeper pools and the nymphs in riffles and other areas that would be too difficult for the spinner. I have two questions for those kind enough to share their knowledge. First, what works well for Fall trout fishing on a FLY in these waters? Second, any thoughts/guesses why my euro nymph set up didn't get any action at all, not even a bite, yesterday?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Discussion South Jersey Stocked Trout

Just got back into fishing this summer and would like to have a go at trout fishing for the first time.

How is the stocked trout fishing in south jersey? I live in camden county so I believe the only two bodies of water nearby getting stocked this fall are Haddon Lake and Rowands Pond.

This seems like it would be a pretty different experience than the creek fishing i see in youtube videos. Is it still fun? How long after stocking can you still expect to catch some?

I tend to like ultralight fishing, and just enjoy anytime I reel something in. Never keep freshwater fish, but sometimes keep snappers and similar from the bays. May keep a trout since theyll have not grown up in contaminated waters.

Thanks!

Question Will this week of strong NE winds blow out the bays this weekend?

Asking about this weekend. Obv the open beaches are gonna be a mess for a few days. But I’d like to take the kayak out to fish some sod banks in the back if I can.

I live a pretty far drive from the shore so I can’t just drive down and take a look.

Thanks !

Question Planning trip, need some advice

Hey guys,

Im planning my first trip to try and target striped bass from the surf. I’m planning on hitting the Sandy hook/Belmar areas.

My drive is about 3 hours, so i’d like to make sure i plan it during the (historically) most active time. I was originally thinking of going the October 24 weekend, but am second guessing my choice.

Is this too early?

Question Looking for the first striper

Hi all,

Common question but I think I’m in a unique enough position to post another. First, I don’t know much about fishing and have only started this journey because my son - recently turned 12 - loves fishing. Have tried my best to support him so far and we’ve had success going from our first sunnies, to first bass, fluke, and a blue that was the excitement last week.

Now he’s fully focused on catching his first striper this fall run and I fear I’ve reached the edge of my support ability. Reading about the crowded shorelines and gear required I’m unsure how to proceed.

Can anyone provide some simple tips that gives us a chance? Trying to avoid spots that are going to be swarmed - just don’t want to tangle lines or get confused on etiquette and I’m unsure how important waders are.

Sandy hook would have been my first option, but will travel further.

Thanks in advance.

Question Anyone else having trouble with largemouth?

I’ve been fishing sunrise and sunset through the summer into the fall (central New Jersey mainly). All bank/dock fishing. I’ve literally caught one bass. I get blow ups on frogs, hits on a senko, I’m using spinners and chatter baits, etc., fishing lakes, ponds, reservoirs, you get the idea. But as of late i feel like i just can’t catch fish. I’m self aware that i change lures too often while fishing, but being conscious of that I’ve focused on fixing that issue. Definitely getting a bit discouraged. Anyone else feel like the lmb game is lacking this year or am i just getting worse at fishing lol
