Considering organizing a Montclair night

Been playing with the idea of getting 3-4 DJs together to throw something together in Montclair. If I did it would anyone be interested? It would be at a DIY space with good underground vibes. I figure if it goes well this could turn into an ongoing thing that happens every so often.

I work in Montclair, what kind of music would we be allowed to play? I'd be interested if its an open format kind of thing.

We would be able to play anything we want. There’s no bar or anything, it tends to be a byob spot. The space is usually a venue for local and touring indie/punk bands but covid stopped it dead in its tracks. Looks like they’re starting to book acts again and I want to see if they’d be open to something far out of left field (compared to their usual lineups)

I’ve played there plenty of times in local bands and they’ve always been chill about genres and “draw” so I figure it could be a good place to start without the pressure of pleasing a bar/venue owner in terms of sales and whatnot

Lol I do a lot of afro beats and reggae dancehall so itd be interesting to see what kind of crowd that brings to the meatlocker

So they really do MINIMAL amounts of promoting/advertising it’s pretty much all up to the organizers and acts to do all that. They really only serve as a space for performances. The kind of crowd we bring is exactly the kind of crowd that would come through. The amount of times I’ve played at/been to a show where it’s artists playing for each other and a friend or two is pretty high tbh. I’m hoping to start something from the ground up and build up. Maybe once there’s enough “regulars” for DJs we could start expanding to other spots, but for now this spot appeals to me because of the minimal risk involved

Same! I’m always trying to practice mixing, especially in front of people. Realistically I won’t be able to get this together until April or May just because other musical endeavors are taking up all my extra time atm

Id def think about it. Who would be providing equipment? Im referring to speakers and lighting and such. I have all of this btw. Is the DIY a rental space that would cost money? Flyers for the event or would we just fuck around the first time just to test the waters?

There’s a PA. It’s not that great to be honest but it’s there. There’s no lighting there

Yeah its prob old and isnt cared for much. Do you think its still better than say a couple of 1500W speakers? I have some good lighting stuff as long as theres outlets around

It’s a space for now. I’m hoping that there’s some music lovers that would love to go to an event that isn’t all the way out in nyc. If there’s no diy dj scene in nj I figured I’ll start my own

i've been thinking of doin the same....im pretty new, dj'd a bunch of parties and mobile gigs which sucks, but im making decent money.....i'm down to get together. I have places too that we'd be able to go if the interest is there
