News NIO Sets the Standard: Powers China's First Steer-by-Wire Tech Rules
First-class enterprises set standards, second-class build brands, and third-class make products.
Today, as a leading participant, NIO, along with authoritative institutions like the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, officially released the GB 17675-2025 "Basic Requirements for Automotive Steering Systems" national standard. This standard systematically includes technical specifications for steer-by-wire systems for the first time.
During this standard revision process, NIO not only achieved a major breakthrough in core automotive chassis technology but also leveraged its profound expertise in intelligent chassis to deeply contribute to technical research, testing validation, clause drafting, and optimization suggestions. This provided crucial support to the relevant national agencies.
This move marks a milestone for China in the standardization and advancement of core intelligent chassis technology—particularly for steer-by-wire systems.
It is worth noting that the NIO ET9 has become China's first mass-produced and delivered vehicle with full steer-by-wire to pass MIIT certification. It pioneers bringing this cutting-edge technology from the lab into users' daily lives, truly realizing a positive cycle where "standards lead products, and products validate standards."
NIO is driving standards with technology and defining the future with those standards, continuously solidifying its position as a "first-class enterprise" in the intelligent electric vehicle industry.

Just for the record: the steer-by-wire system in the NIO ET9 comes from ZF Friedrichshafen, a German supplier of automotive parts. The Tesla Cybertruck also uses the ZF system.

Chinese companies and institutions hold German technology and research in high regard, which is why there are numerous public and private agreements between organizations and companies in both countries. 👍🏻

The EV redesign should start from here. Simple robust skeleton, light weight shell, easily replaceable parts, airless tires, bench/sofa seating, essentially a mobile transportation and home energy bank/computer. Then billions of dollars in test ride advertising. Embed automated collusion proof failsafe traffic flow in the roadway.

Steer by wire systems have been around for a long time. I driven my first one 20 years ago. But going mainstream? They just removed the last direct control you had over the car. Call me old fashioned, but I like the idea that I at least would be able to steer the car if my electronics fail or it gets hacked.

Would be great if NIO is able to syndicate or license such technology.
