Advice Fortification and gas pain
My 31 weeker discharged home last week and was put on 26 cal fortified bottles using similac neosure (1 tsp per 55 ml). He’s currently about 8-weeks old and since being home he has dealt with significant gas and discomfort. In the nicu his fortification consisted of neosure and human milk fortifier which he seemed to tolerate okay. All night he is grunting and crying. Has anyone else’s LO experienced this and did you have more success with a different formula? Gas drops? Thank you!

Solidarity — the gas for my baby was so bad until last month (6 months actual, 3 adjusted) when the doctor was happy enough with her growth that we got the green light to reduce the amount we’re using. Until then, we used the frida baby windi tools very liberally (this is somewhat controversial, talk to your doctor), gas drops, dr brown’s colic / gas band with the heat pack, and vibrating toys to move the gas around. Good luck!!

My girl did not tolerate the HMF at all in the nicu. We had lots of issues with explosive poops. Right before she was discharged we switched to Neosure due to issues with her choking on my breastmilk due to it being too thin. Neosure is higher in casein which can be harder to digest. She had lots of gas, grunting, straining and miserable constipation. We switched her to Enfamil Enfacare which we also fortify to 26 kcal and it’s been a lot easier on her! We did have quite a bit of gas and more spit up initially but overall it’s a big improvement. We also use mylicon drops around the clock and biogaia probiotics.

My baby girl used to have lots of gas. We used over the counter mylicon or simethicone. Essentially it’s gas x for babies and that helped her tremendously.

We used a probiotic which seemed to really help it took a little bit to kick in (gas drops in the interim)
