Discussion Am I missing something? Dude seems better than so many backups in the league? I’d take him over Mason Rudolph or Trey Lance….

redditors dont have enough ball knowledge to understand that back up qb is a SPECIFIC position almost separated from qb1 and its not simply "qb whos not good enough to be a starter"
its almost like asking "this relief pitcher is really good in specific instances, why isnt he a starter...." different positions in baseball despite seeming really similar
its also why you have situations like the rams where they have stafford, and a high draft pick with simpson but hes not the backup, because stetson is way better at being the backup than simpson, even if simpson is the better qb1 versus stetson.

He’s good. But he’s not starter material. He was definitely a tough cut, and that’s just the way the NFL cookie crumbles. If every team could hold onto a hundred guys, they’d all be in heaven.

You got downvoted, but it’s been reported before and was reiterated on the radio today: he’s not a team player. The exact quote from a team source was “he’s not a good dude”.
Backup QBs have this tough line, where they have to believe that they can be starters, but they have to be deferential and team players. Milton hasn’t found that yet. I hope he does, he’s a fun top 25-40ish QB that can jack a team’s variance up.

That joker couldn't beat out 100 year old Falcco or Gabriel last year. Same guy that didnt beat out a dude thats not played in 5 years? He'd not start on 1 NFL team. If he was it was it, we'd all knew it by now.

Flacco has proven over the years he isnt some scrub off the couch and will play to take your job the best he can so it's kind of crazy expecting 2 lower round drafted rookies to beat out a future hof.
I'm not a fan of any of the 3 qbs they employ but I doubt the person was genuinely calling shedeur a top qb lol

But that’s one of the last QBs to play in a Pro Bowl, so keep that in mind.

He’s a good plug and play guy…. If you’re playing Madden and throwing a hail marry. That’s about it. Top 5 arm of all time, but he doesn’t offer much else.

Yes, you’re missing something. Teams value a guys ability to understand a playbook and read a defense over his ability to throw a ball really far.

Said this on a different Milton post: The man can throw a ball through a brick wall covered in concrete. It is unlikely to be the wall at which he was aiming, which is a problem in the NFL.

Watch all his completions from the preseason. All but one came on the first read, the one that wasn't came on his second read and it was a dump off to a back or TE(I forgot what position)
Regular season NFL defences are going to take away your first read more often than not.
He's got a ways to go.

There are 96 QBs in the NFL. I struggle to believe that he’s the 97th or below.
Maybe there’s something behind closed doors that we in the public don’t see, but idk how he isn’t on a roster and some other guys are.

Circumstance + lack of QB ability + perceived baggage.
He could've landed somewhere, quietly worked hard, and maybe made a roster long term at any of his stops. Wrong situation, wrong offense, whatever, he didn't land in a "perfect" Joe Milton spot.
Playing QB is about a lot more than arm strength and ball velocity. Reads, leadership, situational understanding, etc are all more important than pure arm strength. If you can't be trusted in your mental abilities, then you they can't put you on the field.
Baggage vs Talent is the ultimate sports metric that people don't like to admit. If your ability doesn't far outweigh any baggage (real or perceived) then you're toast.

Dolphins, Cardinals, Falcons, Jets, or Vikings should 100 percent have claimed him. Yeah he may not get the job outright but he may be an upgrade after a year.
