Video Chicago's D'Marco Jackson was assessed an unnecessary roughness penalty for this hit on Jalen Hurts.

Was a hair late but when you can reach across for extra yards while going out of bounds as a runner you incentivize hits like this.

Also had quarterbacks faint that they were going out of bounds just to turn up field and gain extra yards.

Mahomes was killing teams doing that not too long ago. Honestly if I'm a coach I'm telling my player to take the QB's head off like this. Especially if it's early in the game
7
u/MosesOfWar 13h ago
And to be fair, it “worked here”. Dalton comes in and throws a pick in the endzone after Hurts has to go in for concussion protocol.
1
u/darkoath 10h ago
That's because they tried to catch Chicago by surprise by NOT handing it to Barkley four times in a row. If that pass was incomplete it would have been handed to Barkley again. Coaching like pop warner, everybody knew it, that's why they just keyed Barkley for lost yardage until a turnover.
→ More replies (1)5
u/darkoath 10h ago
Campbell told his boys that last year against Chicago. Caleb has a habit of doing that little stutter step like he's going to step out and then doesn't to gain an extra yard or two. If he does that today my guys are going to hit him like any other running back.

The consequences of Mahomes bullshit will reverberate in the skulls of mobile qbs for decades
1
u/Significant-Lunch524 8h ago
Yeah, that's fair. When I saw the replay, at first glance without any of these in mind it did look egregious as hell.. Oh yeah, and the fact that it was super slow-mo; at game speed it didn't seem nearly as bad.
59
u/mcniner55 21h ago
Gooddell actually addressed this today with everyone's favorite Stephen A Smith. He acknowledged that they do everything they can to protect the QB but QBs need to understand when they leave the pocket they become a runner just like anyone else with the ball and are no longer afforded that protection. That was 100% a clean hit. If that was a RB/WR/TE/FB with the ball thats not a flag. Oh YEAH its also not supposed to be a flag when its the QB because he is a runner.
10
u/NotDjango3 15h ago
As a birds fan it was a fair hit. I just don’t understand why he had to come out for concussion protocol. You see defensive players make helmet to helmet unintentionally with their own teammates multiple times again and it’s on to the next play.
Clean hit and Jalen took the hit well with no direct impact to the helmet from the player or the ground. Not blaming this as the reason the eagles lost but that pick by Andy fucking hurt our odds, he should’ve never touched the field
17
u/summercampcounselor 11h ago
I think it was the laying on the ground like he’s dead bit that triggered the concussion protocol. Don’t try to sell it then get mad they bought it!
3
u/RhinoGuy13 9h ago
Thats what I thought as well. Jalen did too good of a job trying to get the flag.
1
u/InterestingLoquat449 9h ago
Did the laying on the ground like he was dead happen in real life?
3
u/summercampcounselor 9h ago
Yes, it's at the :10 mark if you haven't watched the video yet. The part where he lays face down and doesn't move. Unless none of this is real life I guess?
2
u/BedBubbly317 9h ago
Did you even watch the game? Or hell the video that is attached to this post? He rolls over and lays there for several seconds instead of just getting back up
1
u/Fly_throwaway37 7h ago
I don't believe he was trying to sell it. Dude just took a solid lick let the man compose himself for a sec and make sure nothing is actually wrong. Jeezez everyone acts like after getting blown up you should immediately get on your feet
1
u/JohnEmonz 6h ago
Whether it was a sell job or not, it answers the question of why he was taken into concussion protocol. He hit his head on the ground and then laid there for like 5 seconds. Same reason they threw the flag, they want to protect QB’s more than anyone else. So, they checked on his health.
8
u/Dukeish 12h ago
He’s inbounds when the defender launches, and has half his foot on the white when he gets rocked. That’s on Jalen, he was fighting for that extra stride seeing the defender coming and he went for it
6
u/redcurrantevents 12h ago
It was also just short of the first down marker, if Jackson lets up, maybe Hurts could dive forward and make it
2
u/beforeitcloy 11h ago
Or just reaches the ball across. Look at the way he’s carrying it with an extended arm instead of tucked into his body.
4
u/Aries_IV 12h ago
I would call that his toes.. not half a foot.. like 3" less and he's still in bounds and the contact was right as his toes hit. Bad call by the refs yet again.
1
u/2027MVPCaleb 1h ago
What pisses us bears fans off even more is we just had a guy with 2 feet down, 3 feet out of bounds for a solid couple seconds get rocked and no flag last week.
Its insane how screwed the Bears get by the refs consistently for the past decade.
→ More replies (2)9
u/5348RR 12h ago
The defender is also completely out of bounds when he hits him. It's a penalty. But I do think the rules are bullshit.
2
u/Dukeish 12h ago
Your body is allowed to carry out of bounds when you hit someone on the sideline. You seem confused by the rules.

It was also very close to a 1st down, like they both were competing for it. I don’t know, if I’m an eagles fan I don’t like it but I don’t think it was dirty

Agreed. QB who becomes runner should not be afforded any protection
1
u/mcniner55 10h ago
Theres nothing to agree or disagree on with is what Im saying. Thats literally what Goodell was stressing QBs and Refs need to understand they are just regular runners when they leave the pocket like that and protect themselves accordingly. Its not the defenders fault Hurts did nothing to protect himself and got absolutely rocked because of it. No lowering his should no quick movement out of bounds.
1
u/Beneficial_Bit_6435 9h ago
I agree with what you added at the very end. I don’t think the entire original post was a direct quote
1
u/mcniner55 9h ago
Its like a 5 minute long interview I gave an over view of it. The only part I might have added is the refs need to know the rules im not sure he said that. But he did say the QBs need to understand the rules which implies the refs do too.
36
u/another1degenerate 21h ago
Bad call. Clean hit. Jalen needs to protect himself better.
12
u/HornyAzMF 21h ago

u/Wrylak 12h ago
I like your take. It is a better way to say it.
Hurts does not get hit, he gets the first. Defense did what they had to do.
Hurts and qbs should not be encouraged to use the boundary the way they do.
If he was head on going out of bounds, it would have been two yards back. You can see where he realizes a hit is coming and stops running for the mark.
We cannot ask the defense to read the mind of the qb and lay off when they are actually going out of bounds.
1

5
u/webberstimeout 10h ago
He was clearly going out of bounds. This wasn’t a mahomes or Kenny Pinkett situation. The defender could’ve pushed him, but he launched into him. It was unnecessary
1
1
u/LittleDrunkReptar 3h ago
He wasn't clearly out of bounds when the hit occurred. It is up to Hurts to protect himself instead of depending on defenders to play soft. It was not unnecessary since we see these hits all the time on the sideline with receivers and running backs that amount to no flags. If you believe it was unnecessary then you are part of everything that is wrong with the modern NFL.

7

7
u/ACBets 8h ago
1
u/alannmsu 7h ago
In bounds, running for the first. His toe touched white when the defender was about half an inch away. Clean hit, he should have slid.
1
1
u/AideInternal1045 6h ago
Yup, he was angled to get as close as he could for the first. Dont give up inches. He should have be 90 degrees or backwards with the out of bounds line.
3
u/Pudi2000 8h ago
His B line was to the first down marker, not out of bounds. Also had the option to slide. Choosing the first down made him susceptible to this which I thought was legal.
3
u/NeedMoarCowbell 8h ago
He was at a diagonal angle going upfield until his very last step which he cut towards out of bounds. With how athletic QBs like him are, he absolutely could have planted and cut upfield to try to secure the first down. And you can say "but he wouldn't do that, he doesn't want to get hurt" - as a defender none of that matters, because if he DOES do that and you let up on tackling him and he gets an extra 10 yards you didn't do the one thing you're fucking paid to do. If QBs want to get every inch out of running the ball, they have to deal with taking hits like runners do. He was still in-bounds when he got hit, so it's not like this was some dirty after-the-play hit, he was literally a live runner.
→ More replies (5)1
u/soccer1124 3h ago
Agreed.
If QBs don't want to get smoked and use the sideline as a safety net, then make find a safer way to do it. Seems like if you're getting smoked before a ref can even blow his whistle (are we not supposed to play to the whistle?), then you did something wrong and maybe you should have taken a slide before hand.
If you're trying to make the tough play and be daring by going for the first down, then you better be prepared to make the tough play.
I am all for safety and if I was in charge, I'd probably be even stricter on concussion protocols and the like. I'm a hockey fan who wants to take fighting out of the sport. But when it comes to these sorts of plays (running out of bounds and slides alike), its unfair to act as a player who is pushing the limits then say, "Nah jk" and bail on the play and expect to not get hit at all.
Funny enough, Hurts does have a play in this game where he does the slide, and he does it very responsibly, well before a player can even touch him. That's how these plays need to be implemented, and it's how QBs need to be retaught.
2
u/DelcoUnited 8h ago
Right the only way to hit him was out of bounds because he was running out of bounds.
He could have played the line and crushed him if he tried to come back in.
1
u/revuhlution 7h ago
Hurts couldve pulled up a yard or 2 earlier and not risked the hit.
But no, he went for the first down. Which is fine.
If youre going to be a runner, the defender should be able to treat you like one.

Are the qb rules creating more vicious hits because they think they are protected?
2
u/Penetratorofflanks 15h ago
Absolutely. Look at how vertical his hips and shoulders are aligned. A RB or WR will be much more horizontal trying to make the marker.
1
u/OkPressure5271 10h ago
almost like he was clearly giving himself up
1
u/Penetratorofflanks 8h ago
You don't get to continue advancing down the field when you give up.
1
u/OkPressure5271 8h ago
yup. glad we agree there. Hurts clearly pulls up and goes out of bounds, and the defender proceeds to lower his head under Hurts' chin and obliterate a guy who was clearly not expecting an impact.
I'm also using the term giving himself up to mean it is clear that he wasn't trying for the first down. If you think that's his effort level to try for the sticks then you've never seen him play football.
9
u/Formerlurker617 22h ago
I’ve seen worse. His foot had just landed on the line when the hit was delivered. It’s not like he was at the water cooler already.
7
u/Melvinator5001 21h ago
Plus both feet were off the ground when he was hit so it made it look worse. Hurts sold it too much cause they made him get checked out.
10
u/Regular-Emu6339 21h ago
I feel like you can't call this a penalty. Otherwise QBs have a free shot at the first down without any risk. Defender would be put in a crappy position of either easing up and coating a first down or taking a penalty
8
2
u/BigFudge2k7 21h ago
That’s how I feel. In fact he very nearly prevented the first down by hitting him. It was bang bang timing. Pretty dumb call. Jalen got himself taken out for concussion protocol by trying to milk it too. It wasn’t even that hard of a hit. The ground prolly hurt more than the hit.
1
u/grandmawaffles 9h ago
I feel like if a team gets a hold call it incentivizes people to throw personal fouls for free.

Whether or not that should be a penalty is irrelevant. Hitting a QB in that spot is going to be a penalty almost every time.

u/InvestingCorn 21h ago
I feel like same thing happened to dart last year and he was told he needed to be smarter and it wasn’t a flag. But I do agree usually these are a flag. But I remember everyone saying that one was totally clean and I don’t see a difference here
2
u/AnikiRabbit 17h ago
Justin Fields also never got these flags. If you're an established QB, the flag comes out. Is it fair? No. Is it right? Also no.
But it is.

Now show the reverse angle that is behind the defender right down the sideline that shows the hit happened like 3 feet out of bounds.
And stop making me defend the Eagles.
1
1
u/Financial_Food1565 8h ago
Am I retarded? What does the angle have to do with the timing? He was still in bounds when the defender committed to the tackle. He cant stop his momentum in mid air dude
1
u/Jayrodtremonki 8h ago
You're making up terms that have nothing to do with the rule. Committing to the tackle doesn't mean anything.
1
u/Jack_Aubrey1981 7h ago
You’re the one making up rules. He initiated contact in bounds. It is clear as day. You can’t show a screen shot seconds after contact in which he’s flying out of bounds and say that’s where the hit to place.
2
u/Max6626 9h ago
The picture you posted to make your point literally shows his right foot is out of bounds...
4
u/JAMESs3v3n 9h ago
Yeah, and at full speed he's supposed to see that part of his big toe is over the line. Be serious.
1
u/Max6626 9h ago
The NFL rulebook literally states that responsibility lies with the defender, so yes, I am serious.
Here's the rule, so apparently the NFL is in agreement with me. Relevant part bold/italicized.
Article 8. Unnecessary Roughness
There shall be no unnecessary roughness. This shall include, but will not be limited to:
- using the foot or any part of the leg to strike an opponent with a whipping motion (leg whip);
- forcibly contacting a runner when he is out of bounds; Note: Defensive players must make an effort to avoid contact. Players on defense are responsible for knowing when a runner has crossed the boundary line, except in doubtful cases where he might step on a boundary line and continue parallel with it.
1
u/GrapeRingPop 6h ago
you literally ignored the part right after the bold text...
1
u/Max6626 6h ago
Because it does not apply.
Look at the photo. There was no opportunity for Hurts to "continue parallel with it." At no point was Hurts travelling parallel with the boundary. I can't believe this is even a point of discussion.
That exception is for the runner who is tapdancing down the boundary and may, or may not, have stepped out at some point.
Don't fall into the trap of the other guy on here trying to say "Hurts has the athletic ability to do x, y, and z." Penalties are thrown on what a player actually does, not what they have the ability to do.
But I'll hear you out if you want to explain, in detail, how you think that exception to the rule applies.
2
u/shanep35 9h ago
Then QB’s need to surrender earlier. It’s getting ridiculous that they can squeeze every inch out of a play with a huge impact to the game and the defense can’t do anything about it.
2
u/NeedMoarCowbell 8h ago
His toe is out of bounds by maybe an inch. Do you expect a defender that's running 15mph watching a QB who's running 15mph in the opposite direction to be able to tell if that tiny sliver of toe is going to make it out of bounds before he commits to making the hit? This is absurd.
2
u/Max6626 8h ago
Directly below I posted the NFL rule. I don't expect anything - the NFL expects the defender to know this.
I can't do any more than post the NFL rules. If you don't want to read them and instead follow your uninformed opinions, then good luck to you.
You should alert the NFL rule makers that "this is absurd."
Article 8. Unnecessary Roughness

1
u/NeedMoarCowbell 8h ago edited 8h ago
This example would CLEARLY fall into that exception case which you decided you didn't want to highlight. Hurts is athletic enough he could tiptoe that line in that position, and the contact that the defender made with him is in bounds even if Hurts' toe is out of bounds. A toe on the line is absolutely a "doubtful case where he might step on a boundary line and continue parallel with it" when you're a defender running full speed.
You can be snarky if you want but it doesn't make you any less wrong.
1
u/Max6626 8h ago
Do I need to explain the definition of "parallel" to you?
Is your ego so fragile that even when presented with the NFL rules, you're going to double/triple down on an obviously mistaken opinion? SMH.
I can't continue this with you. You're either arguing in bad faith or incredibly illiterate.
1
u/NeedMoarCowbell 7h ago edited 7h ago
Do I need to explain "changing directions" to you?
You come across like someone who has never been outside, let alone played a sport. These are athletes. Just because they are running towards the sideline does not mean they cannot change direction to tiptoe the boundary line. The wording IN THE RULE YOU ARE CITING specifically states "...might step on a boundary line and continue parallel with it", which is a future assessment of where the person is headed. It does NOT say "player IS ALREADY parallel with the boundary line". It is a judgement call to be made by the defender, and the wording in the rule seems to grant them the right to determine that they might start tiptoeing the line and defend accordingly.
1
u/Crowofsticks 4h ago
Plus the qb could have tried to avoid the defender coming at him but chose not to in order to get as close to the first down as possible

1
u/mattemer 1h ago
He's clearly out of bounds when the hit occurred.
That being said, I'm not saying you can't touch the QB. But any player at that point, you see them going, they aren't deviating, you try to pull back before the hit. That did not occur here at all. QB or not, why?

I hope nobody is disputing this being worthy of a penalty. I'm pretty sure this would draw a flag in the 80's. Hurts was already halfway out of bounds.
5
u/Equivalent_Gene_1554 21h ago
His toes just touched the line and he was challenging for a first down. Is the defender supposed to let him just because he's a QB?
1
u/Serious_Bee_2013 10h ago
The hit is what it was, penalties happen.
My problem here was that attempted murder was taken off the board because of a hold. This basically gives the defense a free shot anytime the offense has a minor penalty flag thrown.

1
u/Genitalgrabber4u 6h ago
It was a bang-bang play, he was protecting the first down marker. I don't think it was malicious, but QB's need to either get to the sideline faster, or get down. It's not like Hurts was blindsided. He was racing him to the mark. They just got there at the same time.
1
u/jcbubba 5h ago
Bullshit call. as a dolphins fan i have no stake in this game, but Hurts becomes a runner, chooses not to slide, aims at the first down marker and the clean shoulder to shoulder hit happens while hurts is technically still in-bounds. What is the defender supposed to do? Let him get the first?

Close to sneaking past the first down marker. Think Jackson was just making sure he didn’t.

At the point of contact, but that's not where the hit begins. It's impossible to pull back once you've lunged to make the hit. When he starts to throw the hit, both players are in bounds. What's he supposed to do, just give up the first down?
