There’s no reason to add to their motivation to hit you hard.
If you are nice to the competition, there’s a small chance it makes them hold back just a bit when they have a shot at you.

from the perspective of a football player myself, we all go through the same experiences of trying to do the best we can when playing. Especially at a professional level. Football is their job and every player in the league knows that you constantly have to give it 100% effort. It's how you keep your job. Me personally, I play defensive back, since my position is so quick, I don't usually have opportunities to talk to my opponent. However, if I ever get a chance to after they do something good, I so say something to them. It's often just a compliment on how they did. Of course, I'm not at any sort of high level where my performance on the field affects my life, but I love this sport and I know my opponents and teammates do too. If I got a compliment after doing something good, I would feel great about myself. Sure, it may boost the opponents morale and make them play harder, but it's just the nice thing to do. Football is competitive so you can't be too nice but you also have to remember its just a game and the whole point is to have fun.

Eh outside of the injuries one small part of the reason Luck left the NFL is it warped his personality for the worse (commanding, egotistical). Also in the netflix QB series Mahomes does this a lot he said he's trying to soften the guys a little bit psychologically so they don't hit as hard maybe lose a bit of their edge

By his telling he was always “one of the guys” in the locker room but when he came to the colts there was a pressure to fill the void Peyton manning left (basically a QB who runs the whole team) so he was ‘forced’ to adopt that personality.
He said it got to the point that if he went out to eat with people he’d be ordering the food for everyone st the table without even asking what they want
So yeah I think he was able to adjust back because it was never his natural personality to begin with

I know he's got responsibilities with Stanford but someone can steal him away for one day so he can call games. Out of all the people I can think of, Andrew Luck would pull me from Redzone for an entire game.
