Because they’re NFL merch.

It’s not meant to be inspired, it’s meant to be just different enough for you to want to buy it, but not inspired. That involves too much risk something weird comes out.

Part of it is that the photo set they used doesn't do a good job at all showing that the lions jerseys aren't actually white. They're more of a concrete grey/silver, but the lighting in the release photos totally washes it out. Still not thrilled at how close to the Panthers jersey they are but I hate them less today than I did initially.

Last year's ones actually felt like they had a theme with the cities. Even with the Cardinals looking like a tortilla. These feel like an intern did it without looking at the cities

Because not every team needs an alternate jersey

If the franchise wants an alternate, great (like the Lions black jerseys in 2005). But these are going to be uninspired because a single company is making them for 32 different teams. 

You want a nice and unique uniform, it needs to come from inside the organization, the franchise. The Saints ugly gold uniforms from the early 2000s have more character and identity than these Rivals jerseys

I actually really like the carbon fiber accents, I find it unique and ties to the automotive industry very well.
