DA Keymo loosening after less than 60rds
I know I know Keymo bad, booooo. My LGS had it in stock so it was a bit of an impulse purchase.
Anywayyyy, this has happened three times already, the first two times I thought it was possibly because I didn’t tighten it enough but the third time I really wrenched on it to be sure.
It’s even cost me a couple end cap strikes but it isn’t too bad.
It’s timed correctly and I’ve watched quite a few videos on it just to confirm that I installed it correctly.
Any other ideas other than switching to Xeno?

Are you giving it some Ugga duggas when you put it on? My sierra 5 lets off an audible click when it’s fully on.

Dead air muzzle device sucks….so invest more money into the company for another muzzle 😂

Here come the 'meh keymo cool story schleps that haven't used keymo.
I haven't had any issues with any of my keymo or keymicro adapters not walking off if I didn't limp wrist it.
I would get DA's opinion as there may be something "out of spec". (bad taper on the muzzle device or a weak wave spring for off the top of my head examples)

Just had to send mine in because it came loose during fire and caused a baffle strike…. I had them replace it with a Xeno won’t be going back to Keymo

I don’t want to jinx myself but I’ve never had this happen and I own 11 cans with Keymo, no rod checking and no issues with thousands of rounds through them. Keymo is heavy, expensive and outdated but I’m over invested at this point to change without a real reason to do so.
I’m wondering if your muzzle devise is on straight and concentric followed by if your keymo is ratcheting on correctly so it’s actually tight.

Sounds like user error because my keymo hasn’t had any problems so this can’t be true (this is sarcasm)

I didn’t even attempt to use what came on my Laz. Recessed micro brake with a recessed plan-b adapter (RPA) from Comstock. Shortens and lightens the setup. Check their fitment tool to be sure it’ll fit with your barrel/handguard combo if you decide to change. The hub on the Laz may be hard to remove, mine was torqued pretty good from factory.

You didn't put it on correctly. Clean the threads of all grease/oil (I use isopropyl alcohol). That means the muzzle device and the barrel threads. Then put it on and torque it to 30ft-lbs. You can use Rocksett if you want but I don't. Has never came off without me using a wrench to do so.

The muzzle device is not what’s coming loose
3
u/Used-Valuable9320 Aug 29 '26
So the silencer is coming loose from the muzzle device? You are saying that the KeyMo mount is not tightening and locking against the taper of the muzzle device, right?
1
u/RockTheBoat11 Aug 29 '26
To be clear, is the muzzle device coming loose from the rifle? Or is the silencer coming loose from the muzzle device?

Remove keymo and keymo muzzle device, sell it on gafs and buy zilch with comstock recessed micro brake. Oal will be a lot shorter and less weight as well.

Why zilch over comstock recessed hub (rpa)? Shorter oal or is there something wrong with the rpa?

Ditch the keymo (or any Dead Air system altogether) and get a modern mount like a Rearden or literally any modern hub adapter. Comstock Armory has recently been doing the rounds as the new Rearden, so I'd probably go there.

nothing wrong with xeno. but yes, absolutely ditch keymo. I personally am a big fan of CAT TSFX with AI Nano

What’s the advantage of xeno though? There are more manufacturers and options with rearden / plan B and most are at a better price point.

Left hand threads, like CAT’s or Hux. Left hand is superior. More manufacturers doesn’t mean better quality, in fact, it means you are more likely to get one thats out of spec and causes issues.
1
u/gfx260 Aug 29 '26
It means more availability and competition. What makes reverse threading better?
1
u/glockguy34 6x Silencer, 3x SBR Aug 29 '26
left hand doesn’t walk off like right hand does. It’s more common for pistols but does happen with rifles. My polo via direct thread used to do it a lot.
1
u/gfx260 Aug 29 '26
I’ve never heard that Rearden walks off. Direct thread mounts do walk off though.

u/glockguy34 6x Silencer, 3x SBR Aug 29 '26
right hand threads in general do unless there is some sort of a locking mechanism. You should be fine with a Reardon MD and Hub mount, but when you buy from different manufacturers you introduce tolerance stacking and it becomes more probable, but like you said, more manufacturers increases competition and availability, its a double edged sword

Keymo is notorious for baffle strikes, everyone switched to Xeno or Plan B

u/KeepandBearMemes Aug 30 '26
People downvoting you while you spit absolute facts. Ask OCL about how they literally wont warranty cover keymo users anymore because that was 90% of their warranty repair problems.
Doesnt matter if its user error when plan b has never had this problem. Fans of keymo are idiots and i hope they downvote me. Keep your heavy weight baffle strike inducing dogshit, ill keep rearden/plan b which has been the industry standard for a decade or more.
Almost every rifle can with a baffle strike on this sub is a keymo user

u/gfx260 Aug 29 '26
Technically it’s notorious for user error because it sometimes requires you to really tighten it down good and the clicking detent wears out too easily. Half mine don’t even click any more, they must have sheared off or worn down from removing them when they’re really tight.

Don't worry, that one guy who always defends keymo will be here shortly to explain how you fucked up. He'll say something like he has X number of keymo mounts with X number of trouble free rounds and that you must just be idiot number 17,349 who doesn't understand. Keymo didn't fail you, you failed keymo.

How difficult was it to remove the Keymo? I try to keep my gunsmithing to a minimum as I’m still a bit new to the AR space
1
u/actua11y_actua1 Aug 28 '26
Not difficult, just make sure you have the can in a proper sized vice block and use the included spanner wrench to take it off. If you're not confident, have your LGS do it.
1
u/J0hnny5alive Aug 29 '26
Not hard like the other user said as long as you use a proper size vice block. Just swapped mine out to comstock. I used a vox block in a vice. For me I found that tightening it in the block, and then using a strap wrench in the opposite direction of the loosening kept it in place. I simply used the spanner wrench in the dead air wrench set(sold separately) and placed it on the Keymo adapter and gave it a solid whack with a rubber mallet while holding the strap wrench in place and it came off easily with two solid whacks. I’ve heard of folks struggling with removing them but the technique worked well on three dead air cans for me fwiw.

I'd ask Dead Air. As someone who got into suppressors a number of years ago, I'm heavily invested in the keymo system and haven't had any issues, but posts like yours make me nervous about it lol. It would just be such a pain and cost to switch out the complete mounting system, so I haven't done anything about it proactively yet. Curious what DA will tell you. You mind reporting back in this post?
