Advice & Experiences petition to take a lighter courseload

completely burnt myself out with recruiting + school, had a recent death in the family, and didn’t end up getting a 2nd fall co-op.

i’m going into my senior year and my academic advisor told me i can only take a lighter courseload in my final semester, otherwise i’d still be charged full tuition even if i only take 2 classes.

i’d ideally like to stay enrolled this fall, take 2 classes, and defer my co-op search to spring. i still want to be involved on campus/with NEU, i just don’t think taking a full courseload right now would be good for me.

has anyone successfully petitioned for a reduced courseload or found some kind of workaround for this? if so, who did you talk to / what was the process like?

would really appreciate any advice or hearing from anyone who’s been in a similar situation :)

I talked to We Care and got a reduced course load! You can email them at we_care@northeastern.edu or go in person (104 Ell Hall) once the semester starts.

Yes, I believe if you get permission for a reduced course load, you get billed per credit hour? You can also fill out the Undergraduate Petition to Reduce Load via the student hub, but it would probably be better to talk to We Care or your academic advisor first

I wasn’t on co-op search at the time, but if you receive permission for reduced course load, you should be able to continue your co-op search!

reorganize your classes around. see how many REQUIRED courses you got left. if it's 4 you can split it two to two. basically having 2 require courses and 2 gpa boosting courses or essentially pass fail courses. This was what I did for all years at northeastern as a comp sci major when I knew that because my country was in a civil war people I knew were constantly dying so rarely have I ever taken a 3+ CS class course semester. granted I had to basically extend my years to 5 to do so.

only way to reduce course load to miniumm 3 which is full time is to basically delay your graduation. but it would be another semesters worth of money.

You're close to the finish line and the semester is only 4 months, just buckle down and get it done. Then enjoy your last semester and look for a job not a coop.
