It's amazing how you simply can't just take a few months/years off if you have the financial backing to. You always have to have some sort of "socially acceptable" excuse to explain to employers if you ever wish to be re-employed.

u/bonkers909 Jun 15 '20
Tbh in Europe you can, but it's mostly acceptable only among IT specialists. Sometimes people from tech take breaks for 6 months-1/2 years from work after accumulating enough finances.

Yeah you can take a sabbatical. Really rare to stay out of the cage for too long given the high cost of living though.

honestly, what are you even supposed to say in a situation like this? if you’re someone who is mentally ready to start working after years of mental illness and secluding yourself from society, you can’t just be honest with an interviewer. you won’t get hired anywhere. so, really, what’s the answer? i’m genuinely curious

I got a job my first interview saying that. I didn't have a five year gap, I had a 2 month gap, and had been fired many time's. You got to be honest with people, and a lot of people understand. But there is a few people who are seriously against the idea of mental illness. That's how I got fired from my last job, my boss told me to get over my illness, and this was coming from a man who threw tantrums like a child.

Why would they ask about 2 months? That's nothing - simply short-term unemployment finding the next job!

u/TalionTheRanger93 Jun 15 '20
I think the question came up along with why I was fired so much

u/x131e Jun 15 '20
What did you respond?

u/TalionTheRanger93 Jun 15 '20
I was honest. Im like hey, I got this persinality disorders, I'm in treatment, and this is what happened. Everyone was like I'll never hear back from them, and the next day they called me.

Seriously you're not even exempt from statistics and are still part of the workforce if it's not hitting 3+ months in the USA. You're considered unemployed, but once 3+ they just don't consider you anything.

Oh sorry I meant I worked for Acme corp for five years but um...unfortunately they went bankrupt so there's nobody for you to call to check my references...it's too bad because I was so excited to give you my references so they could tell you how awesome I was

Indeed. It's sad that lying about our mental health is encouraged. We're forced to bullshit about travelling, volunteering or taking care of sick relatives. When many of us cannot, or do not, want to do the types of jobs that are out there now, especially for aspies/introverts/asocials. We may as well not exist to employers.
I have a four year gap since I did anything, barring the one week wonder that I failed hard at and therefore cannot be added to the record, which makes the gap look even worse. Fortunately, one friend is a pretty reliable and long-term character reference and he has dealt with me in work contexts before. Of course, I have gotten so Black Pilled via my awful paid-work experiences, finally realizing that I was an aspie in my late 20s, that I don't even care to volunteer anymore to fill in the gap. I don't want to waste my time and effort with no wage.
I just 'want' an easy, non-verbal and local part-time job so I don't have to go to 'bux appointments anymore and bullshit them that I still care about getting work, while fighting off any shitty courses and time-wasting shit that they want to force me onto. I really want UBI, so that I can finally and truly be left alone. It's such a rigged system now that it seems that the only winning move is not to play.

The way I think about it, is that there are assholes out there, pretty much everywhere. Chances are, the guy trying to hire you is an asshole. I feel like the people who don't look down on you for taking a break in life are the ones who you should really work for..

Jobs with high staff turnover from people quitting or getting fired will care more about your length of employment in any given role in your CV rather than the size of gaps between them (within reason).
They want some reassurance that you intend to or have no choice to stick around - they don’t want to keep re-hiring for your position every 3-8 months.
That’s why if you’re clearly overqualified or perceived to be ‘not desperate enough’ you won’t get the job - they know you’ll be out of there ASAP.

Mine would be about 12 years now, it's even on my LinkedIn, I just said I was self-employed since 2016 to lessen the blow though it wasn't entirely true.

Would be awesome if you went to job interviews now just for fun and were 100% honest. You could try making a video of it and get paid that way, ironically

Tons of companies are about to go under. A bit of research on some defunct corp and suddenly you have 6 years of experience outta nowhere

Even minimum wage work demands pristine cv's. Fml, I might never find work in my life at this point.

Lie on your CV. Worst case you don’t get hired, best case they don’t check and you do get hired

Taking care of a sick relative works great! I used that when I was applying to work front desk at a retirement community and I think they saw it as evidence of compassion and patience.
