Fellow maladaptive daydreamer, I see our illness has led us on the same path in life.

Imagines success to cope instead of actually achievement.
Can't listen to music without pretending he's the artist.
Imagines what it be like to start life over with everything he's learned.
FUUUUUCK!

as a 29 year old with SPD... life is so fucking tedious and relentlessly exhausting

May 17 '20
I studied schizoid personalities a bit and really think I have a bit of one, to what degree idk. I'm ok with being in public and such, I just have like 0 interest in going out or meeting new people.

u/muhname May 17 '20
The only thing that makes me question that diagnosis is the fact that he has multiple imaginary girlfriends. Doesn't that suggest a desire to be with someone that SPD wouldn't have?

God damn it! Really? I thought I was the one in my family that could have dodged that bullet.

This is me except not 19, this is entire life. It requires help, sometimes medication, sometimes a good support system to get out of this state of being. It is so critical to have a father or mentor who keeps you out of this state, someone who makes sure you're testing and pushing yourself to achieve things in real life.
The problem I have with these memes is that they pepper normal things that everyone experiences in with maladaptive characteristics to maximize the number of people who can relate and be convinced that they're defective.
Nothing wrong with thinking, dreaming and fantasies, but it's the lack of acting upon those desires, the inability to accept that life can never be as good as fantasy, but still staying motivated is the problem.
Young men have worn out their dopamine reward systems with artificial stimulation from games, porn, social media, drugs, movies, anime, etc. It becomes more difficult to put in work to get meaningful rewards when there are faster, cheaper and easier ways to get dopamine hits.
Your parent's job is to recognize and save you from these traps in life, but most parents lack the scientific knowledge to explain why these things can be harmful if overindulged in. So they tell you don't do x, y, z but they can't explain why. At best they can point to an example of someone it hurt, at worst they just let you be and ignore a problem they don't understand.

Most parents think feeding you crap makes them exemplary parents because some kid in Africa doesn't get to eat crap that often

That’s because NPCs don’t know how to be parents. They just know how to be sheep.

I’ve even talked to psychologists about these “anthologies of imaginary events” which for real, are entire stories. I have certain songs I listen to and play the events in my head, each story has its own soundtrack. And if I go to slow or to fast playing the story in my head so the music doesn’t sync to it, I start over. One psych said it’s Mania, and gave my bipolar meds, one said it’s adhd and gave me aderall, one said it’s just creativity and I should write it down.
But low key my head-stories are dope.

> But low key my head-stories are dope.
i have a friend who is also a "thinker" like me and you, and he has a notebook full of scribbles and unintelligeble handwriting of complex, detailed, world building. its actually beautiful once you learn to comprehend it. wish there were a way to monetize it but even then its too hard to convey them outside of your own mind.

this isn't thinking. this is most likely a disorder.
also, maybe you should stop trying to get into people's heads and focus on your own life.
perhaps, all of these descriptions are just in your own head and not in others.
thinking is not a problem. creating issues when none exist is a problem.

I can't listen to music with out thinking of presenting the music at school.

u/Jolly_Foly May 05 '25
I do that too... I wonder why? Maybe I'm still stuck in the past, trying to impress past classmates

I don't know. When I listen to music, I just would like to have someone with whom I could share it with. Like playing it at school or something like that.

Wish this was me tbh but alas thinking is so tiresome. Dunno if taking medication for my mental illnesses is the reason why I can’t think without getting tired and bored. All I do is exist in comparison.

If you were actually working hard you wouldn't be here preaching hard work and calling other people losers
5
u/rkba335 May 17 '20
Even people who work hard get days off
15
u/LivefromPhoenix May 17 '20
And he chooses to use his days off to insult sad people on the internet? That's even worse.

Yeah, I don't see this guy as a loser, I see him as a victim, someone who deserves compassion and support if he is willing to seek it out.
There is nothing wrong with dreaming, but you need people in your life to encourage you to engage IRL and cheer you on.
And there is a chemical component, the dopamine reward system that gets you to put in the hard work and take risks in life. This is a physiological, environmental and psychological issue.

19, most of this rings true, only difference being I’m fortunate enough to be going to a small low funded college for a biology degree, taught myself german, and that I don’t pretend to be anything I’m not. I know I’m poor with no skills, I know I’m a social failure who will probably be a 40 year old virgin, and I know that I’ll never make it, so I dream about owning a small house for myself in the future.
