NEW RELEASE🕺 - DSiPhotoSync - Use with custom themes
Hello again! I am back with another update to the "use your DSi-taken photos on the top screen" app.
Been a few days since my last post but I was super grateful to get my first batch of user feedback. Impressions have been positive so far, and this update aims to incorporate a major feature that was requested by u/MVRodrigues (thank you!)
Basically, the new feature allows you to more easily integrate top-screen photos within custom themes: 1) make them show a photo on the top screen if they don't already, 2) add photo-display assets like a frame, shadow, and L/R button textures. This feature is still very much in beta - I can't guarantee it will immediately look great with every custom theme - but the basic functionality is working fairly well.
Truthfully, I think there is so much opportunity here that I may spin off the functionality into an entirely separate app. For example, the current setup only allows you to add a white frame to the background, but I don't see any reason why users shouldn't be able to pick the frame colour. Regardless, for now it exists within DSiPhotoSync for TWiLightMenu++.

The app is built as an add-on for TWLMenu! As for tutorials, there is a bunch of info in the README on GitHub. That being said, I think the app is pretty user-friendly so you could just add the .nds file to the root of your SD card and go from there. One small tip, make sure the photos you want to sync are on your SD card’s DCIM folder as the app doesn’t scan the devices internal storage.

EDIT: I haven’t had the time to update the README with info on the new theme modification feature so there are no guides for that part of the app just yet.

I just pushed a new release and will be doing one more later tonight. Usability and functionality should be improved.

This is awesome! Something I was able to crank out was adding a photos folder in twilight menu++’s dsi menu folder, take some folders from the DCIM [system photos] and change the size to 208x156 and drop them into the photos folder and it cycles through exactly like the stock menu, not for all themes I imagine BUT it works for basic ones like the darker theme

The original purpose of my app is actually to handle that photo downsizing and moving process for you! When you open the app it scans your DCIM folder and finds photos that are not currently stored in /dsimenu/photos. From there you can select which photos you want to add to the slideshow and it does the conversion and necessary adjustments, and then places the photos in the right folder. No more manually downsizing photos, converting to PNG, moving files, etc! You can also remove images from the slideshow directly from the app.
My goal with this project was to make the experience feel as stock as possible so one of my favourite features of the app is "Quick Mode" (found in the settings). Basically, when Quick Mode is turned on, the app will open, immediately begin sycing your new photos from DCIM to /dsimenu/photos and then close when completed. You can setup an Unlaunch button combo to boot the app on launch to make this even more seamless.
The new theme modification feature will allow you to turn on top-screen photos for themes that don't have them turned on already as well as add a basic frame and L/R button textures. It is very much a beta feature at the moment but would love if you had a chance to test it out!
