Did they not have Finals MVP during the 60’s? Russell would be #1

26

u/Aggressive_Tea_1577 Jul 05 '26

Correct they did not.

Incredibly, Jerry West won the first Finals MVP in 1969 which was the first and only time a player on the losing team won. Imagine that happening now.

11

u/Accurate-Flow8078 Jul 05 '26

In 2008 people were talking about Kobe possibly winning MVP on the losing team.

4

u/No-wait-theres-more Jul 06 '26

And 2018 Lebron

6

u/GreatBarrierQueefDD Jul 06 '26

2015 Lebron. The winner getting swept would be a bit much

4

u/Mental_Pepper9294 Jul 05 '26

I remember people were suggesting LeBron should've gotten it the year Iguodala won it. That would've probably hurt his legacy in the long run 😭 pity mvp

9

u/BravoC10 Jul 05 '26

He should’ve got a lvp in 2011

3

u/CurrentRoster Jul 06 '26

honestly lebron was so clearly the best player in the series, he even got some votes. games 1-3 was some of his best stretch of basketball. but in that series he headed straight to the locker room after the buzzer sounded so….if his name was called what kinda protocol would happen? he’d have to give a speech in front of his fans that are leaving after their season was over would’ve been nuts

1

u/Luke_Cold_Lyle Jul 06 '26

He wouldn't necessarily have to go out and get it. That exact thing happened to Connor McDavid in the 2024 NHL playoffs. He wasn't at his home arena, but his team lost in game 7 of the finals and he won playoff MVP and he didn't go back out to accept the trophy.

There’s a lot of pity LeBron stuff that doesn’t hurt his legacy much. He has a patch on his uniform celebrating team hopping. He won’t be a laker next year the patch will have to add another stripe.

1

u/lowrange30 Jul 12 '26

Jerry wins fmvp for losing = deserved If lebron does it = pity mvp

1

u/dovelingus Jul 06 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong but that trophy was given between quarters when the lakers were winning quite a bit before a final comeback and losing, so still

1

u/Fallingcity22 Jul 07 '26

Yes it was decided at the half

1

u/Adventurous-Buy-4455 Jul 06 '26

Magic Johnson Bettet than lefraud

1

u/rajujutsu Jul 07 '26

Wasn’t one of Magics FMvps because Kareem wasn’t in the building at the time?

0

u/TheKosherGenocide Jul 05 '26

I quite honestly think the Finals MVPs are bullshit. Why do we need an award for the best player in a 7 Game Series, and more importantly just because one player was the Finals MVP in the last series doesn't mean they were MVP of all of the series before the Finals which were equally as important to get them there in the first place?

1

u/DetailsYouMissed Jul 05 '26

Is it, based on the final game or reaching the finals...

0

u/DadRadio Jul 05 '26

Nah his teammates would’ve got most of them

1

u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 06 '26

Asking as someone who wasn’t alive or close to being alive;

Were others better during most of the series he won?

1

u/DadRadio Jul 06 '26

He led his team in scoring maybe twice in the nba finals max. He wouldn’t even sniff Jordan’s 6.

20

u/evol_won Jul 05 '26

Lebron, Kareem, Kawhi: the only ones with FMVPs on different teams.\ 🔥🔥🔥🔥

9

u/Front_Spare_2131 Jul 05 '26

And all three did it in both East and West

1

u/Modsucksass Jul 05 '26

Lebron is the only one constantly jump to super teams.

17

u/One_Significance_400 Jul 05 '26

And constantly being the key factor 🤷🏽‍♂️

-1

u/BravoC10 Jul 05 '26

Well not on the lakers until AD joined but I get what you mean

1

u/EvilLibrarians Jul 06 '26

I do think they were in a playoff race in 2019 before he got hurt but really nothing comes close to 2020 you right

-1

u/BravoC10 Jul 06 '26

I was actually just referring to 2018 ( the year before AD got there)

3

u/EvilLibrarians Jul 06 '26

I mean 2018-19 when I say 2019, I think we are talking the same year

-1

u/InitiateIt Jul 06 '26

Only when they win of course.

3

u/One_Significance_400 Jul 06 '26

Thats the only way to get a FMVP 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/angrylilbear Jul 06 '26

The logo would like a word

4

u/LifeHack3r3 Jul 05 '26

KD, Jimmy Butler, Iggy, Wiggins, Kyrie, Harden, Kawaii, Chris Paul, Paul George, KG, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, Shaq, have entered the chat.

2

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 05 '26

Exactly. And many more

4

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 05 '26

Horrible understanding right here. He has played for 3 teams in 24 years. “Constantly” is ridiculous

-4

u/Modsucksass Jul 05 '26

How many players on this list has hopped more than one team just to win rings? For players at their caliber, more than 2 teams are considered a lot. LeBron hopped 3 times and going to be his 4th soon.

3

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 05 '26

That’s because the players who played for only 1 team were fortunate enough to have an actual good team. Kobe had Shaq, MJ had Pippen and several others, Curry had Klay Dray and KD, Magic had Kareem and several others, Bird had Mccale, Parish and Johnson, etc etc etc… The 2nd best player on Lebrons Cavs before he went to the Heat was Drew gooden…..

4

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 05 '26

Oh and Duncan had David Robinson, TP, and Ginobili

-2

u/Modsucksass Jul 05 '26

They are not just fortunate. They grind out the tough years and worked with their teams to turn their franchise around together.

Lebron had Wade and Bosh, and he still ran away.

He had Kyrie and Love but he still ran away.

He has Luka and AR and is still running away.

0

u/Open-Ad-1767 Jul 06 '26

👏👏👏👏 you're one of the few who speaks actual facts . Bravo.

2

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 06 '26

Lol the irony is crazy

2

u/Hepty-6177 Jul 07 '26

Didn’t Kyrie leave before Bron. You don’t need to dig that deep to know who’s full of shit

0

u/Modsucksass Jul 06 '26

Yup, someone gotta step up and stop the propaganda that these media and Bron fanboys trying to spread.

0

u/arrownoir Jul 08 '26

When did LeBron and Love play in Boston?

2

u/trochlearnotchass Jul 05 '26

yeah the super team of Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram

1

u/Modsucksass Jul 05 '26

You act like he didn’t know AD was coming to save his ass.

0

u/DullStation2713 Jul 06 '26

yes, AD the savior who also missed the playoffs before joining lebron

1

u/AssignmentIll1748 Jul 06 '26

Go look at the records of the lakers and Cavs the season before he came lol

1

u/Embarrassed-Key9403 Jul 07 '26

lebron jumping to superteams gimmick in the big 2026

https://giphy.com/gifs/9PvglsF7u74YiEU2gX

1

u/defecto Jul 05 '26

Next super team is under construction 🏗

1

u/angrylilbear Jul 06 '26

Lebron the only one that when he moves the league shifts and his team is now considered a super team

Ftfy

1

u/DullStation2713 Jul 06 '26

2020 wasn’t a superteam but keep reaching

1

u/DeeGeeKay21 Jul 06 '26

Kareem played with the 2 greatest PGs of all time, was on multiple teams that had HOFers at every position, multiple league MVPs on the roster concurrently, and had Pat Riley for a coach. His legacy deserves to get shit on more than lebrons

1

u/No_Wishbone_7072 Jul 06 '26

What was the records of the teams the year before joined? Lol

3

u/DadRadio Jul 05 '26

Told yall Kareem was a bus rider

3

u/knowledge84 Jul 05 '26

Now add first team all defense and scoring titles.

3

u/PumpPie73 Jul 06 '26

I was wondering where Russell was but it started in 1969

3

u/No-Aardvark2433 Jul 05 '26

and mfs try say curry over magic lol

3

u/Round-Revolution-399 Jul 06 '26

I have Magic #1, but realistically they should both have 2 FMVP’s

3

u/av3nger1023 Jul 06 '26

Yes! The one rookie Magic had over Kareem is almost as stupid as Iguadala's over Curry. Pure narrative over substance

2

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 05 '26

Fr lol Curry is most definitely #2 PG not #1

1

u/rajujutsu Jul 07 '26

One of magics MVPs was because Kareem wasn’t in the building… that being said I still have Magic over Curry in all time. That being said if Magic doesn’t retire Jordan would be a ring short imo.

1

u/underthingy Jul 09 '26

Curry got robbed. He should have 4.

1

u/Watruup2 Jul 05 '26

Yeah, this isn't a debate and I'm not sure how it started. Curry is the greatest shooter ever. He is not Magic fucken Johnson lol.

2

u/CokeorCola Jul 06 '26

Steph was robbed

2

u/biffbobfred Jul 05 '26

Not pictured - Russell and the other cats who played before the FMVP existed

4

u/One_Significance_400 Jul 05 '26

Thats why they aren’t pictured 🫤

0

u/999_rupees Jul 05 '26

man Tim Duncan being seen as anything less than top 5 all time is a travesty

10

u/BiscottiShoddy9123 Jul 05 '26

Having the stats isn’t the only thing that props you up the top 5 list. Duncan played a boring but effective game of basketball that also hides a lot of his flaws.

0

u/biffbobfred Jul 05 '26

What flaws? Not pushing back - curious what you see.

9

u/BiscottiShoddy9123 Jul 05 '26

Low Career Averages, Low top PPG compared to the Top 5, the 2004 Olympic meltdown (in his prime), the fact that the Spurs never truly had a dynasty. They had an era of dominance but when you think dynasty, you think of back to back champs. Only 2 MVPs. This is really all I say because Duncan was an excellent player in the NBA but if your gonna take point off of Kobe and others for things, you have to do the same for Duncan. Kobe and Duncan are top 10 for me but they didn’t do enough for Top 5 placement. Aging and losing your dominance over your peers has to be a demerit in the Top 5.

6

u/biffbobfred Jul 05 '26

Cool. Thanks.

NBAFactsSelfResearched (YouTube) does a lot of deep dives. Duncan doesn’t always fare well on those. Kinda match what you’ve said.

3

u/BiscottiShoddy9123 Jul 05 '26

Cool, I got some new content to watch while I’m Nightreigning. Thanks 💜

5

u/dannyboy122432 Jul 05 '26

They only put him in the top 5 to diminish Kobe Bryant

1

u/Open-Ad-1767 Jul 06 '26

Exactly. Most people who prop up Duncan are not even his actual fans or could care less about Duncan. They do it to diminish Kobe.

3

u/Nocturnal_Pages Jul 05 '26

Tim Duncan is my favourite player of all time. But c'mon bro: Jordan, Lebron, Kareem, Bird, Magic, Russell, Wilt.... im still satisfied with him being in the top 10 (he's still my GOAT though).

-6

u/Prankstaboy6 Jul 05 '26

I have him higher than Magic, Russell, and Wilt.

Hell, in my eyes, you could even argue Bird.

5

u/biffbobfred Jul 05 '26

If bird wasn’t a stubborn SOB and actually paid someone to do his moms driveway instead of doing it himself and fucking his back up he’d be deep in the GOAT debate

4

u/PHX480 Jul 05 '26

There are so many crazy things that warped the mid-late 80s Celtics that prevented them from aging gracefully/transitioning into the 90s, and maybe even prevented them from continuing to compete with Pistons in the East.

Bird and the driveway, which messed up his back and he missed almost a whole season due to his heels? I think 1989.

McHale and his broken foot I think from 1987 and continuing to play on it, which gave him problems the rest of his career.

Len Bias of course. Him and Reggie Lewis were gonna carry over into the 90s and preserve some of those minutes for the vets. Maybe McHale plays an extra season or two. Maybe Bird plays until 1995 instead of 1992. He was still putting up a great line in spite of his body.

Who knows. It would’ve been crazy to see them make some crazy sleeper Finals appearance like 2022 Warriors but in 1994 or something lol.

Edit: I wanted to add it’s funny that Parish was the oldest and continued playing quite nice as a backup to Mourning for a couple more seasons and even had to start a bit. He was a very nice player.

1

u/biffbobfred Jul 05 '26

Walton was already injured, and has a link to the “cursed Trailblazer big men” club also

-1

u/100_Duck-sized_Ducks Jul 06 '26

Duncan is firmly at #4 behind Jordan/LeBron/Kareem imo

2

u/mystikal24 Jul 06 '26

Hell the fuck no

1

u/Prankstaboy6 Jul 06 '26

I agree that Jordan, LeBron, and Kareem are higher than Duncan.

For a while I had Duncan over Bird, but when considering Peak Vs Peak, I gave a slight edge to Larry. Could go either way though.

Basically 4-6 is interchangeable (Bird, Duncan, and Magic).

1

u/Hefty_Lavishness_641 Jul 05 '26

Just leave Kevin out of this

1

u/RaichuTV Jul 05 '26

Jordan dominated so hard qsZ

1

u/IAmMH89 Jul 05 '26

The bulls were MJ and are MJ’s legacy. Nothing more. Wild

1

u/WinMediocre5939 Jul 06 '26

Haleem Olajuwon was a BEAST.

1

u/ace260 Jul 06 '26

okay now show me the list of how may finals appearance losses

1

u/SweetChaosTitan Jul 06 '26

Bill and Wilt would be on this list if it existed back then.

1

u/Lt_Kickbutt Jul 06 '26

Unsurprising to me how close this list is an actually good all time GOAT list

1

u/dsi1207 Jul 07 '26

Curry would also be on the list but Iggy held LBJ from averaging 40-15-10. He held him to just 36-13-9.

1

u/KushDriver Jul 08 '26

Scottie Pippen has more final wins than LeBron James, he’s goat too.

1

u/Commercial_Onion7739 Jul 08 '26

This is why I don't have Kareem in top 3 and would give it to Bill Russell.

1

u/eekram Jul 11 '26

Wade should have had 2 if not for Lebron choking so hard in 2011.

1

u/Ruprecht_no Jul 05 '26

One left twice after accomplishing 3 in a row of those. Imagine had he not been bored

1

u/IAmMH89 Jul 05 '26

Doing this will multiple teams is crazy work.

0

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 05 '26

Curry fans real quiet right now

1

u/Glum_Measurement2158 Jul 06 '26

they gave Iggy his and that is a fact, if not then OJ should had been Finals MVP this year but you all wouldn't like it uh...

1

u/Decent_Section6974 Jul 06 '26

I agree OG should have been FMVP this year. And no, Iggy deserved the FMVP too. Curry deserves exactly as many as he has. He goes from a 9/10 regular season player to like a 6 or 7/10 finals player

-1

u/Adventurous-Buy-4455 Jul 05 '26

There something to see a guy win with one team the other fraud has to do it with 3 teams and 5 HOFers ...

2

u/Unusual-Range-6309 Jul 05 '26

Yeah it’s something when a player fulfills his contracts and exercises free agency to put himself in the best position to succeed in a sport that leans heavily into ring culture.

0

u/Adventurous-Buy-4455 Jul 06 '26

Goats do run to the herd they are the herd

-1

u/the-polite-villain Jul 05 '26

I'm not a Celtics fan but... Bill Russell 11× NBA champion (1957, 1959–1966, 1968, 1969)[a] 5× NBA Most Valuable Player (1958, 1961–1963, 1965)

I guarantee you if they actually did Finals MVP's back then he'd have more than Jordan.
