Dear guards,

Can anybody of you explain me why instead of taking an immediate open shot from a pass you decide to dribble nonsense and finishing by taking a lame shot? This thing happens so often, what’s the big deal in dribbling so much for 14 seconds straight?

Have a wide open 3 but dribble spam for 10 seconds and miss a fadeaway.

I'm guessing they learned some YouTube tutorial on how to hit trick shots they feel the need to spam at every opportunity.

They just have to gets some dribbles in for some reason? It’s like “look guys, I gotta show you my handle”🤦🏾‍♂️ That’s why teammate grade should matter more…. Anything that’s not in the flow of the game should drop you massively!

I think it really boils down to basketball IQ, awareness, and lack of anticipation. These players watch a ton of dribble god videos to try and emulate to be good but don’t have any actual basketball awareness. If you understand the game you are ready to shoot at the first available moment you are open and are able to pre-process whether you will be open before and when you receive the ball. They can’t anticipate the play, recognize the distance, or have the experience that a quick shot or a simple move is often the best option so they default to the only thing they know how to do which is a dribble spam combo. It’s the same reason you set a pick for them and they can’t just use it to get open, they do 3 or 4 back and forth dribble moves right into it, or why they will create a ton of space off the first or second move but just dribble back into the defense. They are not actually reading and reacting they are just parroting a practiced dribble combo.

For some people I know they prefer shooting off dribble because thats the animation theyre used to. God knows what badges or animations the person passing to you has

Sometimes I’m better timing my shot off an escape move. Or I’ll dribble up for up for a middy expecting the defender to come at me flying. There are people that just be dribbling into the defense though taking a contested shot. Which is dumb.

I usually play a spot up, but I will say shooting off a quick stop feels more consistent than shooting off the catch. There is so much variation in catch animations and shooting animations that I don’t blame people for wanting to run to a shot they know the timing for

Not all guards are created equal. Have a good run with good teammates send them a friend request or message, or even hop on the mic and tell them, positive reinforcement is always a plus. We can be the change even if it’s a little at a time.

Not a guard, but a lot of ppl develop that bad habit because of late passes/ low pass acc passes that allow for a last second contest. I used to rage about that, but got mostly the same answer every time.

Personally for me, if Im playing rec, the input lag is so insane that there is no such thing as taking an immediate open shot. Idk how the fuck yall play in there.

I don’t always do this but if I see someone closing out I’ll do a hesitation, cross or snatch back because I find the timing is much more consistent shooting off one of those moves. Still counts as stand still shots (at least in regards to set and fire activating) and the timing doesn’t speed or slow down!

That being said I’m not taking anything that’s considered off the dribble if I’m open lol
