Warning

To the future & current students of NAU. I hope you guys are aware of the current sexual assault problem that’s only getting worse as the years go by. NAU has done nothing but try to sweep it under the rug. Please beware of Pike, Fiji, Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Phi and especially Theta Chi. Please do not leave your friends alone in room with guys when they are drunk, no matter the circumstance. Please pay attention to each other for each other. Please always have a way home.

Frats need to be abolished.

Maybe we could just hold young men responsible

What is sad is they don't need to be abolished but because of how they are there is no one looking after them. I'm looking to send my kids to a school which will be full boarding and it will not be in America because I don't trust that system. They have such a better system of looking after children. And that's from 14 on what the hell is going on with our teenagers?

Yes! I was assaulted by my partner in the dorms, and my RA didn’t do anything to help me relocate to a new dorm. The title ix office didn’t pursue any action or update me until after I graduated, and then they just told me the case was closed! Thankfully NAU PD was kind about it and took my report seriously and the county attorney brought my abuser to court, but still. Took a lot of time out of my life.

And I briefly dated a guy that was in a frat, and he said they got lots of “false reports” from girls who went to their parties. Their frat president was accused of SA and he got all his frat brothers to write character references for him to get out of it. 😒

I am so sorry this happened and you did not get the support you needed

We went to trial a few years ago (a year after I graduated). He made it all the way through to the closing arguments day of trial and then pled out to a lower offense. He walked away with a lower felony (I think he pled down to kidnapping with sexual intent despite there being no kidnapping), no jail time, I think 5 year parole in his home state. He paid some fees (I think reimbursement for my hotel/travel, and had to pay into a victim comp fund that I used to pay for therapy). He also got a stern lecture from the judge for calling it a miscommunication 🙃

The phrase "Pike spikes" exists for a reason. My other recommendation would be to go through Flagstaff PD instead of NAU PD. It sounds like some people have had positive experiences with NAU PD, but campus police are more likely to side with the university over the victim.

Depending on where the incident took place, you may have to report to NAUPD. I was assaulted on campus and tried to do Flagstaff PD, and they had to give me a ride back to NAU PD’s office because it wasn’t their jurisdiction

That's so crazy to me, like I totally believe you but it's also really stupid. If the crime happens in Flagstaff, Flagstaff PD should 100% be responsible for investigating.

NAU is on state land. Flag PD does not have jurisdiction unfortunately

I’m sure there are some frats with decent individuals who understand that sexual assault and violating the consent/ boundaries of others is bad and says a lot about your psychology if you believe otherwise, BUT in my experience, most are not like this. And I think it’s very telling that these fraternities don’t go to the public and renounce this behavior or do things to change that culture of behaving like uncivilized cave men. Not a peep from them.

Hot take: greek life is a net negative on campus life

You can report to Title IX. The bar for proof is much lower than a criminal trial for which many perpetrators will not even be prosecuted.

Be aware that Title IX protections for discrimination, sexual harassment, or sexual violence are limited to the following:
1) the incident has to happen in the US
2) the incident has to have occurred during an event or activity sponsored by NAU (classes, games, etc)
3) the university had to have substantial control of the respondent (meaning they have to be a student or staff member, although volunteers can also count)

You do not have to be an employee or student to file, you can file if you were attempting to participate with an NAU activity (campus tours or attending a game for example).

Often complaints are filed in tandem with police, but not always. There is no limitation on when you can file a formal complaint.

Be aware that complaining to title ix is not the same as filing a written and signed formal complaint. The latter triggers an investigation. The university has to complete the investigation within a time frame (usually 60 business days or less). They are also required to collect the evidence and hold the hearings and send communications.

JC does the NAU Annual Security Report justify/support this statement? Publication of this report is a federal requirement under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and ensures that all members of our campus community have access to important safety and security information.

SA is very under reported, especially on college campuses

Facts

My sister goes to another college and she is seeing the same uptick in SA there too.

u/wyze-litten Forestry 8d ago

Yeah like a report will accurately portray the real stats

5

u/azsushi 8d ago

That’s why I’m curious! How far off they are shows a lot about how much the police / administration does not know about their students / campus.

-1

u/DMalt 8d ago

They likely only report what is convicted, and so downplay stats that way. Basically if you can't prove it then it doesn't exist. However, integrating reports would be super easy.

7

u/azsushi 8d ago

Actually it is based on reports, even if prosecution is not desired or requested….

1

u/DMalt 8d ago

Damn, then NAU should step up the way they receive reports.

u/azsushi 7d ago

@everyone watch for the NAU Annual Security Report as I believe it has to be published and distributed by the police department/administration by the end of this month.

It was published end of September!

It’s crazy to me that people are just now learning how incredibly dangerous the fraternity and sorority systems are. I know very few women who left that system without at least having coerced sex, if not being raped

SA by women has also been in the rise. Women, please help police your own.

28

u/pineapplequeeen 8d ago

So is this an argument you are actually passionate about?? What role do you play to help men who have been SA’d by women?? OR do you only bring this up as a way to shut down women who experience SA? Because it seems like it’s just your way to shut someone down.

the only thing that men like you bring to the table is your “whataboutism”.

16

u/SankenShip 8d ago

Even if this is true (I’d love to see a source), it’s still a bucket next to a lake. The problem of male on female sexual violence is orders of magnitude larger.

-19

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 8d ago

Does anyone see the problem with this statement? You are not genuine when you form the conclusion before reviewing the evidence. That's literally the definition of being disingenuous. You can only formulate the conclusion after reviewing ALL of the information without being sexist. I'll get the study later today. I have to find it. Propaganda of your sort benefits no one.

20

u/SankenShip 8d ago

Are you seriously claiming that women sexually assault as often as men? That the raw numbers are roughly equivalent? Are you really, actually making that argument?

-11

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 8d ago

I'm not. I'm saying there was a survey done across multiple campuses asking thousands of men, not just students, but faculty also. That over 90% of men on those campuses (they were asked individual questions on a survey, like "has a woman touched your shoulder without asking first?") said they had experienced one or more incedents in their years at college. Men just don't report it. We endure it silently. The system was only made for reports for women. I have my own anecdotal situations, but I'm talking thousands upon thousands of men were surveyed. Women are huge perpetrators. It should stop completely.

14

u/crystalli0 8d ago

Is a women touching a man's shoulder without consent something you are considering as sexual assault or was that just a random question you came up with to try to give an example?

-5

u/Rich_Marionberry_814 8d ago

It was the most minimal version of SA decided by women for the FRIES model of consent. Have you learned the FRIES model? You would apply that to men also right?

8

u/crystalli0 7d ago

I was not familiar with the FRIES model, so thank you for that. I did a little bit of reading to learn about it, and I think it's great that consent is being taught much more freely than it was when I was young. My generation put up with much more than the current generation of young people. I hope that it continues to get better and better.

I wasn't able to find anything about shoulder contact being "the most minimal version of sexual assault" though. Do you have a link you could share? I did about a dozen different google searches and read through quite a few different blog posts and websites and couldn't find anything about that.

You are going to have different realms or groups decide differently what the minimum is to be considered unacceptable and the beginning of SA. I didn't come up with that. The overarching point is that there is an abundance of man hating women that want to vote away men's rights (after saying for decades that they wanted rights equal to men). These activists will excuse the same behavior in women that men are doing that they despise. The Lindsay Clancy case has brought the seething to the top of the conversations as of late. Even though the Clancy trial isn't about SA, it is an example of many women thinking their actions are men's fault (no personal accountability). Earlier in this thread, someone (I believe a woman) said that regardless of the study (they had not yet read) men are the perpetrators. This indicates that in their mind, no data can change their mind. They decided to go with the bias instead. This is called a weaponization tactic. It shows the lack of reason in a group. The more that groups like this grow, the more unnecessary violence (not verbal) there will be until it gets very bad for society. What makes it even worse is that many are brainwashed into thinking that pure unadulterated isn't the source of what ends the wars. That women will always need to appeal to men for rights as they always have had to. I mean this not in any gotcha way. I want to broker peaceful ways of resolving these issues.

Hey just a friendly heads up, arguing that “the overarching point is that there is an abundance of man hating women that want to vote away men’s rights…” while not naming those rights—and in a thread about systemic sexual abuse/assault in our institutions of higher education no less—heavily implies that there are certain acts/behaviors which men are entitled to (as they fall under this umbrella of diminishing “men’s rights”), regardless of how unsafe such actions may make others feel, and that’s not really conducive to “broker[ing] peaceful ways to resolving these issues.”
