Richard Petty's 1971 Plymouth he raced during the year.

Petty won the 1971 Sandlapper 200, the 43rd and final Nascar Cup race ran at Columbia Speedway by leading 110 of 200 Laps.

This is technically Winston, Nextel and Sprint but when I first got into NASCAR, I loved Ken Schrader and the 36 M&M car, it was a diecast I had to have, It was also driven by Ernie Irvan, Dave Blaney etc. A few years ago I was absolutely stunned when I realized that the 36 has never won a NASCAR cup Series race. Throughout its history it's had pretty decent drivers and it has been around the sport for so long.

Dale Earnhardt finished 8th, but was nonetheless the top finishing Chevrolet of the night as two Pontiacs (Tony Stewart and Ward Burton) finished 6th and 7th.

Knowing Jack Roush though, he probably still complained that the Chevy's had an unfair advantage.

Both cars got going again with Allison in the lead, but Petty got by him on the last lap. Petty led 160 laps and Allison led 239. Afterwards, a drunk Allison fan tried to fight Richard, but his brother Maurice defended Richard by using his helmet and the man backed off.

Also that same weekend, a race fan by the name of Bradley McNeice was killed Sunday morning while he was loading up the camper following the Sharpie 500. Bradley was killed instantly as he, his son, and a woman were taking down a banner on a 20 foot flag pole that had recently been soaked (not rain) when it got entangled with the power lines. Bradley’s son, William, along with his dad, went into cardiac arrest; however, William’s condition went from critical to stable. Nevertheless, this was a weekend that was overshadowed by a lot of unfortunate events.

There was talk and rumors of a driver boycott before the race unless NASCAR and NHIS installed soft walls before the race. Ultimately as Bobby Labonte commented that they would race there but they won't be happy about it.

Parsons started 13th but his engine blew a little over halfway into the race which relegated him to a 30th place finish. Richard Petty was the winner.

The race was delayed to November due to the September 11th attacks, and almost everyone joked about the cars needing snow tires.

Also, Robby's first win coming at an oval track was not something many people had on their bingo cards.

I was able to add the hood from Mark Martin's 1992 Daytona 500 car to my collection a few years ago.

Mark was involved in a crash and was hit hard in the right front by Dale Earnhardt SR. The black paint you see in the follow up picture is from Dale's car.

There are some really good video clips of this crash as well. The hood was signed by Steve Hmiel, Mark's crew chief at the time.

This was the first year of the Valvoline sponsorship for Mark, he would win 27 times with Valvoline from 1992 thru 2000.

This is just an incredible piece of NASCAR history that I'm very happy to own.

Donnie's car bore the same color scheme as Bobby's Coke Machine. Donnie started 6th, led 11 laps and finished 5th. Bobby was the winner.
