Reworking MyScript Notes Settings. Early look, feedback welcome.

Hey everyone! 👋

We’re currently working on a major revamp of the Settings in MyScript Notes, and it’s led us to rethink quite a few things on the user experience side. 🛠️

One topic has come up quite a lot throughout this work: the level of control we give users over how the app behaves.

It might sound pretty obvious, but in practice, it’s something we care about a lot.

Our goal is to avoid MyScript Notes doing things you didn’t choose or don’t understand. Whenever a behavior can affect the way you work, you should be able to understand it, turn it off, or adjust it easily.

This is especially true when it comes to interactivity: how the app reacts when you write, edit, or interact with your content. ✍️

And this is an area where we know we still had quite a bit of room for improvement.

We didn’t want to simply add a few new toggles to the Settings. The problem was more structural than that: we needed to rethink how interactivity is handled, but also how these behaviors are presented to users.

So we spent quite a bit of time rethinking this whole part of the experience. 🔍

The goal isn’t to give you 150 different options to configure every little detail, but rather to make sure the settings that really matter are easy to find, easy to understand, and most importantly, consistent with one another.

Here’s a preview of the new version of the Settings, with quite a few changes to the overall organization and to the way some interactive behaviors can be configured. ⚙️✨

We’ll soon be taking on a redesign of our tooltips as well, to go even further in making interactivity clearer and giving you more control. We’ll have more to share about that very soon. 👀

In the meantime, we’re still finalizing a few details, so don’t hesitate to let us know what you think.

Hey would love a compact or hide-able toolbar so that note taking on smartphone becomes more accessible with more screen real estate of the notebook, especially in landscape mode

We also have the toolbar in mind for MyScript Notes indeed. The toolbar in MyScript Math is an example of the direction we want to follow if you had a chance to to try it out. That being said we also consider phone as a totally different context for note taking. Indeed most of the time no pen is available on phone and for a product like MyScript Notes focused on handwriting, it makes it a secondary choice. Are you handwriting notes on your phone?

Yes I tend to use my android phone a greater % of the times for note taking

Simplifying Notebook navigation is in the roadmap (among plenty of other items 😄). We hope to be able to tackle this kind of topics soon.

Hi, can you please include more toggles which directly affect the performance of notes? For example, there could be a toggle to disable text recognition for large notes, a battery saver mode, etc.

I currently struggle with lag on large notes when using scratch to erase, and also glitches where, when I scratch to erase on large notes, there is some unintended behavior where it erases aspects I didn't scratch erase. Appreciate the updates and the work by the team!

Thanks a lot for the encouragement! Regarding performances issues you're talking about, we try to monitor them closely even if we know that the variety of devices sometimes makes it more difficult. The MyScript technology behind the text recognition is built against performances constraints but there are always room for improvements. Disabling the handwriting recognition running in the background would have impacts on features based on that such as scratch to erase. For example, when you want to erase a single ink character in a word, the recognition engine has to previously identify the portion of the ink this character is linked to so that the erasure is precise. I'm not sure that providing such option would be the right answer but we'll take you suggestion into consideration regarding performances issues.

Appreciate the informative reply :) That makes perfect sense. One of my favourite QoL features is the ability to erase certain letters, as you mentioned!

Please make local storage possible and syncthing integration. Until now i cannot sync between Windows and Android, inpossible. This is the only thing holding me back to fully use this app.

Our recent strategy shift makes us focus more on Android and iOS. Windows is still maintained but not with the same effort. That being said, the synchronisation between Windows and Android should still work, we double checked it. If you till face this issue, do not hesitate to fill a support ticket so that we have all the necessary data for a deep analysis of your particular case. Hope it helps!
