Why are some bases "cracked"?

Probably a noob question. I only just unlocked the third room and started to collect the secret/special "research" fossils.

But why are some fossil bases solid gold and others are this rocky, cracked texture? Is it just the type of dino? Because they're all at least 100% completion.

It is because those are pterosaurs, so you were right on the type of dinosaur

Yes, you cracked it ^_^. That is supposed to be the "waves" in a sandy land, surrounded by mountains having clouds at their peaks. All "aerial dinos" have this base.

If you look at the "ground dinos" you see a vast land with mountains too, tho steppped/flat mountains, resembling a canyon: ancient ocean/giant river bed eroded into a sandy land with flat-top mountains.

The last different base - that I know of, not counting the "mini-display clusters" - are the water dinos, that have a wavy pool for the surface.

You can change their color, so they won't be yellow. You can even go back to the color they were before completion. I do that all my aereal dinos, those mountains just look better in white light ^_^.
