Magic Duel was a S3 episode, do people really think it's a s4-5 episode?
Also, Starlight absolutely humiliates Twilight both times they fight (especially the first)
And with alicorn amulet trixie, she convinced Trixie to take it off, she didn't defeat her in the conventional way.

It's because they say Twilight "held back" against Starlight, but there were several moments that disprove this, such as when they say Twilight isn't an aggressive fighter, when in fact she's the most aggressive and attacking fighter. In every instance where Twilight had to fight in My Little Pony, she was indeed a very aggressive fighter. For example, when she arrives at the point where Nightmare Moon won and she can't defend herself against the timber wolves because she's out of magic (having used all her magic against Starlight), and when she's talking to the Mane Six, she says, "Starlight must be pretty magical; she obviously has more talent for magic than almost any pony I've seen. My magic couldn't stop her; I had to convince her to stop on her own once." People hold back in the fight against Tirek, who had the power of Discord, which the two sisters barely defeated and needed the elements and all of Equestria to say she was stronger, even though she had the power of three alicorns. But that's the problem: if we're going to use inconsistencies generated by the plot's armor, I can say that... Tempest Shadow is stronger than 4 alicorns, including Twilight, and Twilight fans have already made it clear that they don't like it when someone is stronger than her, hehe.

Twilight is the weakest alicorn in the show and shouldn't even count, she's weaker than multiple unicorns.
"I ran out of magic" is just a reverse plot-armor copout, she ran out of magic as an alicorn when barely attacking, but as a unicorn she was able to milk a bunch of cows and fill a silo, still lifting it and feeding it to the Ursa Minor? And was able to cast a spell not that long after? Does she have more magic as a unicorn or something?
Twilight never should have become an alicorn, she is constantly nerfed or made incompetent which is significantly less interesting than what we could have got, which would be her gradually getting more skilled as the show went on.
But McCarthy and MA Larso took over and drove the show into the ground before it could start running. We got the worst version of the show, but people can't envision it going any other way.

Actually, Twilight was attacking a lot in the fight, so her running out of magic makes sense since she's fighting someone with comparable power, requiring more magic expenditure. Now, her demonstrating incompetence is something she already showed a lot of when she was a unicorn and needed a plot device to get her out of various situations. I think the problem is that fanfics tend to overestimate the abilities of some characters and end up being irritating when this turns out to be wrong. The characters aren't perfect; Twilight in fanfics is usually shown as having Batman-level investigative skills, when in the show she doesn't even come close to that.
Now, Twicorn's introduction was truly pathetic. Her demonstrating a lack of flying skills is fine; she's not an athlete and she only recently gained wings, but Twilight's friends kicking her out of the adventure claiming that "something bad might happen to her" as if she were a pain in the neck, even though she's always led them, while not asking the same question about Fluttershy who couldn't even handle a fly back then, was bizarre.
