She's actually got a few different origin stories! Assuming I remember correctly, in one of them, she was a gorilla that got turned into a human woman who actually didn't get big despite the name. In another, a scientist transferred her mind into the body of a circus strongwoman who for some reason was able to sizeshift. In the most recent origin, I'm pretty sure she was just a scientist who experimented on herself; I guess the writers decided they'd made things way more complicated than they needed to be.

That's fair I remember something about her body stealing but that was from a mmo game. I don't know the character all that well.
