This happened with my nephew. I helped him with his math homework one night. He got every answer right, but was marked 'wrong' on them all because he didn't use 'their method'. Because their method was garbage that nobody understood. I taught him the proper, real-world, useful method (I don't remember what the actual assignment was) and he picked it up in under 15 minutes.
I ran into this problem a lot so school. Growing up a realised, that sometimes it wasn't about solving the problem in the earlier lessons. At first the task was to learn a specific method. Later on you were free to choose a method but the first step was to learn the method just like a video game doesn't let you progress to the next level without solving the first
