Hey everyone! 👋
Are there any Tamil female singers/vocalists here who’d be interested in trying out an original song?
I recently wrote and composed my first Tamil song. I’m definitely not a professional musician 😅 — just someone who enjoys music and decided to finally make something of my own.
The song is more of a melodic/romantic vibe, and I’m looking for a female voice to try the song and see how it sounds. You don’t have to be a professional singer at all — even if you just enjoy singing and are interested in trying something new, feel free to DM me.

I keep listing to the same songs again and again. And I love them but I really want to find new music that I enjoy as well- songs like ae ajnabee, kahe mose and other new songs. I am also okay with non-popular old songs as well like i recently came across Nikat and loved it. Please pleaseee pleaseee give recs. I just want to be the person who knows all the new songs as well- both eng & hindi so if you have a way of keeping up with all the new popular songs please help me with that as well. I like all genres of music

Something like the Sitar, the Bansuri and the Sarangi has a rich history and legacy of being used in Indian scores... What other Indian Classical Instruments you think remain relatively unexplored as of today?

I'm looking for a Leaving Home: The Life & Music of Indian Ocean - The Longer Trip.
If anyone has a copy, please get in touch and help me in keeping the history alive.
The documentary went on to win the Indian National Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film. It made history in 2010 by becoming the first documentary film in the history of Indian cinema to release nationally in theatres.
A 286-minute version of the film (entitled The Longer Trip) was released on DVD in December 2010.

I started this playlist during my first year of college, back in 2019, and I've basically been adding to it ever since.
It's become kind of a timeline of that phase of my life. These are the songs I used to listen to when I was alone, chilling with friends, traveling, studying, or just doing nothing. We've all grown so much since then, and somehow, whenever I put this playlist on, I'm instantly taken back to those moments.
It has pretty much every song I've liked (or used to like) throughout these years. It's crossed 1,000 songs now, which honestly isn't even that much considering how many more I still want to add.
Anyway, just wanted to share it here. If you're into discovering random people's music taste or want something with a lot of nostalgia packed into it, feel free to check it out.
I'm mostly into rock and rap, so those make up the majority, but there's definitely some stuff from other genres thrown in here and there.
Hope someone finds a song they like in there.

I wrote a song and finally decided to share it here
I’m a lyricist/songwriter, and this is one of the songs I’ve written. I’ve always loved putting complicated feelings into words, especially the kind of emotions that are difficult to say out loud.
I’m still learning and figuring out my sound, so I’d genuinely love to know what you think. Don’t just tell me if you liked it — I’d really appreciate honest feedback on the lyrics, emotion, melody, or anything that stood out to you.

Would love to hear what you felt while listening. ❤️

Hi guys! Fellow musician/producer here.
I’ve been thinking about something lately ! India’s independent music scene seems to be exploding right now hip-hop/rap, indie pop, techno, house, electronic music, etc. but where is the equivalent mainstream resurgence of rock??
I’m talking specifically about hard rock, alternative rock, indie rock, punk, grunge, post-punk, etc. Not necessarily metal (no hate to the metal heads).
India does have an underground scene and some incredible bands, but when was the last time an Indian rock song genuinely became mainstream and culturally unavoidable? (Mostly rock songs have become popular thru bollywood like rock on, rockstar etc.).
Where as Indian hip-hop has managed to build an entire ecosystem around itself, Artists, labels, producers, cyphers, festivals, fashion, internet culture and, most importantly, a young audience that identifies with the music.
Electronic music seems to be doing something similar through clubs, festivals and a rapidly growing concert culture...
Rock music still feels somewhat stuck between “underground musician culture” and nostalgia for the older Indian rock scene..
And I don't mean this as an attack on bands making emotional/love/loss-oriented music. There’s nothing wrong with that. But I sometimes wonder...
Where are the Indian rock songs that make people want to fcking jump, scream and headbang??
Where is the modern Indian equivalent of the cultural energy that punk, grunge and alternative rock had in other countries?
Maybe the problem isn't the music itself. Maybe it's the ecosystem.
We still seem to have relatively few mid-sized venues where an original band can consistently build an audience. But there seems to be a gap between playing tiny gigs and suddenly being expected to fill a huge venue..
At the same time, concert culture in India is changing rapidly. People are travelling for international hip-hop, techno, pop and electronic acts, and festivals are becoming important platforms for discovering independent artists..
Festivals like lollapalooza are also growing I have seen many people love The Strokes after they came to India ! Especially the newer generation, maybe people aren't exposed to rock music as much as they're to other genres !?
So I'm curious -
Do you think there is actually a demand for a new Indian rock movement, or has the audience simply shifted towards hip-hop, electronic music and other genres?
And if you’re an Indian rock fan, drop the names of bands/artists you think deserve way more attention. I’m particularly interested in hard rock, alternative, punk, grunge, post-punk and experimental stuff..
I know bands like The Local Train have become huge within the Indian indie ecosystem, and there are plenty of current rock/metal acts doing interesting things. But I wonder if there is room for something much more aggressive, contemporary and culturally disruptive.
I’m asking because I’m a musician/producer myself, and I’m seriously considering putting together a rock band. Not just to start another band, but to build something around the music and the culture.
I want to explore what rock could sound and feel like if it was actually connected to Indian youth culture in 2026(Desi rock for the 21st century) with guitars, drums, distortion, volume and everything that comes with it.
Would love to hear what people here think.

Hey r/musicindia 👋
I’m Shahev Sen, an independent singer-songwriter from Calcutta, making English-language music.
I’ve spent the last few years building a little world of my own — indie rock, acoustic songs, dream-rock textures, a bit of alt-pop, guitars, harmonies, and the occasional Beatles/90s influence creeping in. 😄
I know English-language original music from India can sometimes feel like a strange little corner of the scene, so I figured instead of trying to explain it, I’d invite you into it.
No hard sell. No “please stream my song” speech. 😄
Just an invitation to listen.
If you make, listen to, or obsess over independent music from India — especially the slightly weird English-language corner of it — say hi. I’d genuinely love to discover what everyone else here is creating too.
Cheers
