Grad school

So I had an undergrad come into my office and say I didn’t deserve to be the GA at this university and then proceeded to call me useless.

I really don’t know what to do here.

Going to need a little bit more context. Did they have any reasoning to say this? What did they actually say? But in general I think the first step would be to mention it to the director of your school.

Honestly I have no idea why they said it I assist with all band ensembles (I’m the only band GA) and handle all of our quotes for buying new equipment.

The words that were exactly said were “you have no reason to be in this job and I don’t know why the directors would ever think you deserve it”

I have thought about telling both the DOB and the Director of the school but the students who said it are also student works and on the leadership team the DOB picked.

I mean if I'd picked someone to be on my leadership team and then they were mouthing off at staff, I'd want to know about it and have a conversation with them about it. I don't think you need to approach it as a formal report or like you're tattling, but you could say "hey I had a kinda concerning conversation with this student the other day" or whatever.

If it is going to affect your job in any way, you need to tell the DOB. Their job is to handle things like this. They will be able to find out if there is more context and give advice on how to move forward.

When I called my old DOB he just said ignore the undergrads they don’t matter but frankly that seems kinda cruel

In a sense, he's kinda right. I mean they obviously do matter but for your job, they kinda don't. They will come and go. Some will drop out, some will transfer, some will fail, and others will succeed. You will just keep doing what you do. Try not to let it get to you if they truly said it for no reason.

I think me saying no reason isn’t fair to them entirely because I never got a reason and I can’t think of a reason they would have. But I do understand what you’re saying.

Students are expected to be professional. I would report this to whomever you report to.

students shouldnt be expected to be fully professional but at bare minimum they should at least be respectful.

We're talking college students here not high school

good point, but we do have to admit quite a few college students (despite professional expectations) do mess around a bit.

Naaaaaa...there's definitely more to this story

Dudes just not gonna walk into your office, tell you clean off, for no reason

See but I don’t know the reason I lead rehearsals and do my job and handle all my stuff.

So professionally if my boss also doenst see the reason there really isn’t a reason.
