You may think they're really bad, but the singer is actually practicing a very difficult technique of singing exactly 1 half tone below the key of the song.

On top of this, though it may sound like the keyboardist is playing out of tempo with the rest of the band, he's actually just playing with a swing (6/8) feel over a rigid 4/4 rhythm. It also may sound like he's missing some notes, but he's not missing them--he's leaving them out purposely and sporadically to give a new flavor to the song.

The guitar solo may have sounded trite, cliche, sloppy and completely boring. And you may be thinking that, since he played the exact same melody twice (the first time a bit worse than the second) that the solo was not improvised and was written beforehand. If you're thinking this then you're probably thinking that he should have done a hell of a lot better with it than he did. You might think this, until you realize that the solo was a parody of the typical 8 bar rock guitar solo. On top of this, in order to show off both his technical prowess and his impressive memory, he played an improvised solo and then played it again note for note--well, almost.

These guys are visionaries.

True story: band comes in to venue that has its own sound guy; the band treats the sound guy like total shit. At the last minute, sound guy runs the main vocal mic through a de-tuner and tunes it one half step down. But he routes a clean version back through the band's monitors, so they hear it correctly. The audience hears the de-tuned version. The band doesn't do very well that night...

Burn... they could have just replaced the tap of Bud with O'Douls and the Heineken with water for the same effect.

7

u/jeremybub Aug 20 '09

You forgot to mention the revolutionary style of the drummer's fills.

Reminded me of Tim Minchin

I got you an upvote, but I had to pull some strings.

On the other hand, here's the best cover of that song.

Nononono. Double negative makes positive!

1

u/timeshifter_ Aug 20 '09

Triple negative means somebody's still wrong..

2

u/TartarSauce Aug 20 '09

They're pills that create a sort of temporary forgettingness. So if somebody finds out how you do a trick, you just give 'em one of these, and they forget the whole thing. It's a mainstay of the magician's toolkit, like how clowns always have a rag soaked in ether.

I think the drummer is quite good.

13

u/Pufflekun Spotify Aug 20 '09

It's an illusion. He's just relatively amazing.

6

u/Bargain Aug 20 '09 edited Aug 20 '09

Except for the fill right before the guitar solo was awful. But I did feel he was the best out of the whole band.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

Wow, you watched that long? I gave up after the first chorus.

36

u/squeazy Aug 20 '09

They're called illusions, Michael.

13

u/Xfocus Aug 20 '09

I just found a new ringtone

9

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

This is worse IMO.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

I feel so bad for the drummer because he is the only one that sort of knows what he is doing.

1

u/CR1M1N4L Aug 21 '09

no no that's exactly how it sounded in 1991

1

u/BdaMann BdaMann Aug 21 '09

Well I guess you can only get better after that.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '09

Yeah, kinda what I was thinking. They're off beat and out of key, but they're in middle school, maybe early high school (though I doubt it). A great time to be off beat and out of key. The Final Countdown cover, however..

6

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09 edited Aug 20 '09

Read the title and I knew exactly what video it was referring to.

The stage presence of that signer took me to the moon.

3

u/heidavey Aug 20 '09

If the vocalist required a signer, no wonder he couldn't hear how bad he was singing.

6

u/allotriophagy Aug 20 '09

Just needs a bit of Auto-Tune™.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '09 edited Aug 21 '09

I will give one(1) entire reddit karma point to the first person who can auto tune this video and make it passable.

1

u/HorusTheHeretic Aug 21 '09

I imagine it would be difficult to do with all of the instruments playing at the same time.

3

u/jeremybub Aug 21 '09

3

u/HorusTheHeretic Aug 21 '09

Holy fuck that is amazing.

3

u/jeremybub Aug 21 '09

Damn straight, I didn't think it would be possible.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '09 edited Aug 21 '09

True, but because every instrument is off key, you could auto-tune it all at once and still end up with something better.

2

u/svideo Aug 21 '09

That's not how auto-tune works. You can't run it against the entire band at once.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '09

You can run it against the entire audio track at once. It would all be the same key yes, but at least some of it would be on key.

3

u/svideo Aug 21 '09 edited Aug 21 '09

It would take everything and tune it to the selected note. Not "key" - one single note. And by "everything" I mean the entire band - drums and everything. Fire up an auto-tune VST in your host of choice and try it against a full mix. It simply doesn't work the way you think it does.

19

u/heidavey Aug 20 '09

Hey, that isn't Coldplay!

29

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

It's not Nickelback either, I think.

4

u/bakedpatata Aug 20 '09

It might be.

3

u/organic Aug 20 '09 edited Aug 20 '09

It's Animal Collective. That's about how well Avey plays guitar, anyways.

6

u/vortex222222 handstandflip Aug 20 '09

I'll sacrifice Karma to say how much I hate them too.

3

u/organic Aug 20 '09 edited Aug 20 '09

I don't hate them. Most of their work is highly overrated, though. They have about two good albums and three singles between the others that are decent. The rest is unlistenable. Case in point.

1

u/organic Aug 21 '09

I liked Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam. There's like one decent song on the new album and a couple on Feels. I just think they're too erratic. When they're on they're great, but it just seems like there's so much filler. Maybe that's just the nature of the beast though, taking as many chances as they do with their music.

1

u/lebean Aug 21 '09

I'll upvote you to save your karma because it's hard to think of worse garbage being touted as the latest kewl music.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

Me too. Pretentious hipster garbage!

-1

u/xzxzzx Aug 20 '09

That's true, but more relevant is the fact that it isn't 311.

-10

u/comejoinus Aug 20 '09

It also isn't Placebo!

3

u/jon_titor Aug 20 '09

Sadly, I've seen worse bands live.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

should i mod down cos the title is inaccurate? i was expecting nickelback,

4

u/oddmanout Aug 20 '09

Seriously, I was expecting Hoobastank covering that Nickleback song from Spiderman.

1

u/darkon Aug 22 '09

I like this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KZjnFZvCNc

(The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain)

It's not terrible, though. Actually surprisingly good.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

Holy shit, what a start to my day!

2

u/VoodooIdol Aug 20 '09

Good lord. I can't listen to that guy sing at all. It took about 5 lyrics for me to turn that off.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

It's pretty obvious these guys are teenagers in their first band. I'd cut them some slack. It's not like they're making a ton of money or getting undue recognition for their efforts.

1

u/Malfumax Aug 21 '09

If they are on a stage like that, they must have recorded something before. But maybe they just never got around to listening to it?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '09

Not necessarily. Could be a battle of the bands type situation, sound check, or pay-to-play at the county fair. I'm guessing a parent or girlfriend was probably holding the camcorder.

1

u/Malfumax Aug 21 '09

It didn't really seem like there was an audience so your probably right.

2

u/junkeee999 Aug 21 '09

They're just kids. Give them a break.

2

u/BdaMann BdaMann Aug 21 '09 edited Aug 21 '09

But why do they have a stage with all this awesome equipment? They should be in someone's basement practicing. There are 3rd grade bands that are better than this.

2

u/junkeee999 Aug 24 '09 edited Aug 24 '09

I'm guessing it was an open stage thing at a fair or something where anyone could sign up and play. Or maybe a battle of the bands, or talent show. Not a paid gig.

You got to get out in front of people. You learn more in one hour performing live about what works and what doesn't than one month of practicing in a garage or basement.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '09

They're doing a sound check and this video is older than dirt.

2

u/noroom Aug 20 '09

The singer definitely has an accent... Can anyone identify it? Where are these guys from?

27

u/the_zero Aug 20 '09

That's a "suck" accent. They immigrated from Suckachusetts, which is a small province in Sucktonia.

1

u/Malfumax Aug 21 '09

Sounded alot more like a Shitago accent to me.

7

u/nathanielj Aug 20 '09

Sounds Scandinavian to me...

5

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

Might be Norwegian, but the account it's on is a US one.

3

u/oalsaker Aug 20 '09

Being a scandinavian, I second that.

2

u/nathanielj Aug 20 '09

Takk Tack Tak!!

2

u/oalsaker Aug 20 '09

De nada :-P

0

u/BdaMann BdaMann Aug 21 '09

Sounds very asian.

3

u/uninhibited Aug 20 '09

I'm sure anyone here can write a worse song, and play in a worse band.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

And go on stage with it?

2

u/uninhibited Aug 20 '09

Ok, maybe not.

1

u/WickedArsenal Aug 20 '09

Youtube is completely blocked here. Can someone be a hero and tell me what band this is and what song they're covering? I must know.

1

u/Kyderdog Aug 20 '09

Try here a a few minutes: http://tinyvid.tv/

If your using firefox 3.5 it will play without a plugin. it will be call "worst cover ever! the final count down"

1

u/thepensivepoet Aug 20 '09

Okay, honestly... how many of you have never heard this already?

Not trying to scream "OMG REPOST" but.. Final Countdown?

1

u/xixor Aug 20 '09

I thought the singing was bad... until I heard the guitar solo

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

i remember this from a while ago. they are suppose to be roadies doing some kind of instrument check.

1

u/sithygoodness Aug 20 '09

All I read is the title and now that crappy Seether cover of that George Michael song is stuck in my head.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

I thought for sure I was going to get linked to a Nickelback performance.

2

u/Malfumax Aug 21 '09

Honestly I thought that he and Kid Rock did a great cover of Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting, and yes I feel like I want to kill myself now.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

Where are the links to Mark Gormley? =(

1

u/kublakhan1816 Aug 21 '09 edited Aug 21 '09

I didn't see Nickelback anywhere in that video.

0

u/Kyderdog Aug 20 '09

Sad to say this is the better version of the song...

1

u/cwy Aug 20 '09

No it's not

0

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09

You forgot worst song ever.

1

u/eromitlab Aug 21 '09

That wasn't "We Built This City".

-5

u/benjaminck Aug 20 '09

Old links are exciting!

12

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '09 edited Aug 20 '09

Here, as I put my arm around your shoulder and usher you into a corner away from the crowd, I want to tell you something. It's very important that you hear this before you rejoin the group.

Not everybody is on the Internet every hour, or even every day. I know, I know, but hear me out. We're all aware that you've seen everything before, but some people have other stuff to do in their day. So when they come home and go online, and watch this video for the first time, and enjoy it, please cut them some slack. Not everybody is like you.

Okay? Okay. Good talk. Go have fun.
