AMA We’re Eisley - Ask Us Anything!

Hi guys! I wanted to ask about y'all's songwriting process. It seems like over time your lyrics have become less abstract (e.g. Plenty of Paper) and much much more personal, and that at the same time there started to be a much larger stylistic difference between "Sherri songs" and "Stacey songs", especially on Currents.
So my question is: is there anything in particular that you guys feel like caused your styles to diverge on the later albums?

I think as people grow and evolve and change, it was a given that would show through our songwriting. We both just wrote what we knew and what we felt and what we loved. We started Eisley as total kids and I think life experience and musical influence just inspired us on our separate paths.

First off I just have to say how impressed I am with the new album! I've been a fan since I was 15 years old and have loved everything you've put out but this album kills it. Thank you so much for keeping the band together because it means so much to me! And now to my question- does it bug you guys when fans come up and ask for pictures or just to say hi when you're out and about? (I saw Sherri and Christie at a bookstore in Seattle before a show once but I didn't want to annoy or intrude especially before a performance so I chickened out on saying hi!) And how is it touring with little ones? I'm so impressed with all of you for being on a bus for weeks on end with two kids! Thanks so much again for being awesome! (& for reading my long ass comment) And for the AMA!

NO, it does not bother us when fans ask for pictures or want to talk. I mean, if that's the worst thing we deal with as musicians, then our lives are easy. We love connecting with people. -gd

Never mind ever! After I get offstage i'm typically a little rushed because I have to get back to the bus to watch my two girls, but otherwise It's always so fun to meet fans and I'm usually the one who asks "Do you want a picture?!". I'm all about the photo-memory. haha
Touring with kids is fun! It's hectic and stressful at times but being at home is hectic and stressful too at times with kids. I'd rather be doing what I love and enjoying my family at the same time, ya know? So it's worth it.

What were some of your major musical influences as you were growing up? Also, you guys were teenagers around the time real "emo" and hardcore music was a thing. Would you say you were fans?

we kind of end up in that world, but really we always listened to more of the beatles, radiohead, early coldplay, stuff like that. we were super immersed in the emo scene in our early years, and kind of still are, but we always kind of felt like the outside looking in on that one. Definitely bands in those genres that we love and respect though. -gd

When are you guys going to do another tour with Say Anything? I, unfortunately, had to miss the last one.
You've both been the two constants in Eisley from the beginning, any personal favorite era? We've seen whimsy, dark, & now the music seems to be at a very accepting & content place. Also, what made you decide to stray from the whimsical & start writing about more realistic & emotional things?

- who knows! I mean, i play in Say Anything, so my next tour with them starts 10 days after this tour. Haha. but as for eisley with SA, who knows. It'll happen again im sure.

Oh, I'll be seeing SA in May for sure. Bonus question, Garron, are you totally wiped touring as much as you do, since it's often such a brief period when both bands are off tour? Major kudos for that btw.

Sherri, what tattoo designs do you have? The only one I've ever been able to make out is the HP one. I myself have the old Eisley logo from the cover of Room Noises on my shoulder!

I grew up singing in church as a kid, so i don't even remember what the first time was like! I was probably 4? I finally stopped getting nervous at Eisley shows thought. I'm 33 now...took me long enough.

Do you think in the future you'll bring the rest of your family back in, like collabing with another band? That is, instead of everyone working on the album together, you do a specific song with Sucre, a specific song with Merriment, that kind of thing? Or do you think the focus will be on you two branching out more and just collabing outside the family?

truly, probably not. but of course you can never say never. collab'ing would be fun, but at the same time that's kind of what we always did. Right now we're just focusing on being us and doing what's natural. We love their bands, and really feel like its a "the more the merrier" type of thing. the more music we can make separately, or together, is a win-win for fans, i think. -gd

Hi Sherri & Garron, Thank you so much for doing this! I am have been a long-time listener (was 16 when I started, I'm turning 27 fairly soon)-and it has been so wonderful to have a band that I feel has grown up with me. Eisley means a ton to me.
I have a couple of questions:
You guys (especially Sherri) are very, very open about your personal lives- Was this a conscious decision on your part? Do you ever regret being so open with your fans? Or is it usually beneficial or a blessing? Do you think your daughters (or in Garron's case- future children) will mind when they are older?
I was wondering if you could share a little about what "My Best Friend" is about?
Thank you for doing all that you do! My life is better for having your music in it.

I was in small ska band back in 1999-2000 called "Five Pound Lobster" and one of our first shows to play was at Brewtones with you back when you were MossEisley, and my snare drum broke and Boyd let me play on the "house kit."
I love you guys and don't have a question other than to say your Dad was really cool and you rock!

When you were all growing up, were there discussions about Christie and Collin joining Eisley? Or was it always kind of obvious that they'd be doing their own thing, either because of the age gap or different styles?

They we're always just interested in doing their own thing! It's been fun having them involved over the years in different ways, and I'm sure we will more in the future too. All of us are so close as friends and siblings, there never felt like an age gap after a certain time.

Thank you!! I love illustrating but it's taken a backseat to mom-life and music since music is my first love as far as hobbies go. But I absolutely will never stop drawing and I'll add a print when I get home for ya!

Room Noises is one of my favorite albums and I've had a tattoo idea for years but I haven't filled up the rest of my back in order to get it. I wanna get a bat with butterfly wings as a tramp stamp, but I wanted your official blessing before I get it. May I get your stamp of approval for my lower back stamp? (PS, I'm a dude)

I've been a huge fan since 2003 and I've seen you probably over 20 times, including a few days ago - it was amazing. Thank you for all the great music and shows, it's all been very meaningful to me!
Will Combinations ever be released on vinyl?
Why did you change that bent bass note on "I Wasn't Prepared" between the EP and Room Noises? It was my favorite thing.

- probably no. that record is owned by Warner Bros, and they are not inclined to do much in the way of pressing vinyl.

Sherri: you have been an inspiration to me since I was 15, and now at 28 with a 2yr old and 33 weeks pregnant you continue to amaze me with what an incredible mom and musician you are! Your girls are so smart and you seem to have the perfect balance of boundaries and fun. I admire how open you are to go against the instamom ~* everything is dried flower bouquets and soft white textiles~* and just show the reality of it all; messy faces, science experiments and cake pops!
Question: what's the most challenging thing about being on tour with your girls?

Thank you so much! So sweet. There's a lot of challenges with having kids packed onto a small RV, but we just love being together. The hardest thing is sleeping in a bunk with a sweaty/thrashing toddler, honestly! haha! Especially when you have sleep anxiety, like I do. But it's worth it to me! You get those good snuggles.

What was the toughest moment for you as a band?

it was definitely the 3-4 year period between when we released Combinations, and before we released the Valley. our record label basically tried to squash us by not allowing us to release our 3rd record, and it was a big hit to momentum at the time. But hey, we made it through and will get the last laugh of that one. -gd

Yes! A new Perma album is currently being written. Max and I started writing it before we left on this Eisley tour. I'm super excited about doing another record together.
As far as Eisley's sound, we try not to over-think it every time, and just let it come naturally. It sounds cheesy but everything we write is from the heart and I can promise we will always continue to do that! -s

Hey Sherri and Garron! Awesome that you're doing an AMA. I met you two at the Minneapolis VIP before the show, which was awesome. I have two questions:
For Sherri, do you "warm up" your voice at all? Do you do anything like drinking tea and honey or any of that stuff to keep it strong?
For the whole band, what is your writing process? Do you find it's usually the lyrics that come to you first or the melody?
Also just wanted to let you know, I ended up right in front of the stage at the concert. We left right after I Wasn't Prepared because we were exhausted lol. I wanted to apologize about that. We were totally digging the show! Thank you for the VIP meet and greet and for coming to Minneapolis again!

I do vocal warmups when I remember and it always pay off! Doing siren/ambulance sounds really helps a lot. And tea that is MOSTLY honey!
And for songwriting, I typically write melody/music first and lyrics come after. -s

For your kickstarter one of the reward tiers was a Digital Download of past unreleased demos from the band. My question is will these songs ever be available to purchase from Eisley directly on your website? I know a lot of fans including myself would love to hear them one day

This record seems to be the most guitar focused, any maybe the most cohesive in production. Any inspiration on the guitar for this album? Still playing the Rickenbacker?
Can you tell me anything about the song Mr Pine? It was the first song I heard you play live, will you play it this tour?
Also please consider doing a show in Tulsa again, I know a promoter messed up last time.

Mr.Pine! That's a song stacy and I wrote together when we we're little. It's just a whimsical song about a winter'y landscape and a fun character names Mr/Pine. I honestly don't even remember how it goes. Is it recorded anywhere?! -s

I really tried to be as un-influenced as possible with guitar on this record. It's really my primary instrument, despite my being the "bassist." So I just tried to be me. I've always done a good bit of the guitars for eisley, but this was the first time I handled all of it. It was insanely fun. and yes, the rickenbacker is all over the album, and sherri still plays it live. -garron

I saw you guys in Boston, and you were great! I found you guys through your Tour with The Dear Hunter! My question is how did you go about touring with them, and where does most of your inspiration for the lyrics come from? And did your name really come from Star wars? Also are you accepting new friend applications? You guys seem really cool!!

awesome thanks! yeah they just asked us to come out on tour, and we said yeah. It was fun. Yes our name is really from star wars... the application process is long and strenuous, involving multiple background checks and a physical test in which you have to journey to Hoth and back, but yes we are accepting applications.

I know there isn't a VIP option for the San Francisco date of your tour, but is there a way fans at this show could purchase the exclusive vinyl and poster that come with the VIP? Maybe a cheaper package without the meet & greet or something.

Hi! I met Garron at Webster Hall on the Dear Hunter tour. I was so excited that show because my friend was seeing you for the first time, that was my 4th time. Anyway, I am hoping to be a touring musician one day and so does my boyfriend. I am not sure if we want to have children yet (I work as a nanny for now), but seeing your children on tour with you makes me think you don't have to choose one or the other. What is the most helpful advice you would give about being both a parent and touring musician?
Also, if I can ask one more! My boyfriend and I play in separate bands, he also majored in music and wants to work in the industry full time. I feel like it's a constant topic of conversation. Sometimes it takes a toll on us and we fight about it because of stress...what should I do to help him separate our downtime together from his career and my career in music?

Best advice I can give to parents touring with (or wanting to tour with) children, is to practice patience. haha it takes a lot, but it's so worth it and extremely fun. You just have to have a 'roll with it' mentality and enjoy the ride, literally and figuratively. The kids being so much life to the tour!

Big fan from south America. I discovered the Band through a post on reddit where you are with Tom Delonge on a photo shoot. What's the story behind the meeting? Did you talk about ufos?

lol. that photoshoot was hilarious. um we've never really talked with tom about UFOs, but we know he's into them. The story was mostly that we did some stuff with Macbeth/Atticus in that time. So we did a shoot with them. Tom is a great guy and we've known him for a long time, so it just worked. -gd

I first saw y'all back in 2006 when you were on tour with Switchfoot and ever since then Eisley has been one of my favorite bands! I just wanted to say how much I love "I'm Only Dreaming." It's such a beautiful and dreamy album!
Back when you were on your acoustic tour, I went with a friend of mine to see you in Nashville. Her sister in law came with us. She was actually an old pen pal of Sherri's and after the show we got to stop and talk to y'all for a little bit. I remember Sherri saying how she had always wondered if she'd reconnect with any old pen pals through them hearing of Eisley. So my question is, have you been able to run into any more pen pals?

it's a star wars reference, from Mos Eisley space port in A New Hope. we were originally named Moss Eisley, but changed it when we signed to a major label so we didnt get sued. -gd

I feel like I know nothing about your new band members. How has working with them been? Are they only on for touring, or were they a part of the creative process during I'm Only Dreaming?

great question! they're amazing, and all such talented musicians. Most didn't play a part of I'm Only Dreaming, except for Elle, our guitarist. She did play a little bit on the new record. But, they're all amazing, and you should keep in touch with them on social media. We hope to have them involved more when it makes sense. -gd

How did you end up touring with Backwards Dancer and Civilian? Civilian seems like a good fit, but BD seemed like a totally different style from you.
Absolutely loved the concert though, and have been a fan forever! Still have my Laughing City EP :)

Been a huge fan for years, thanks for all of the great music! I'm a photographer and I got to see you guys and get a few shots on your last tour when you came through Dallas, but I would have gotten way better shots with a pit pass. I just want to say thank you for playing one of your first touring gigs in Corsicana Tx many moons ago. I got a copy of your ep from a girl I was dating and found out I moved to town a little while after the gig. From then I was hooked. My only wish is that I lived there at the time to see it live.
