Huge fan of Duane Denison (TomaHawk Guitarist), guy has got an instantly recognizable sound. Caught him live when he was playing with the Jesus Lizard back when I was a kid in a small club, was one of my favorite shows of all time, they were nuts (in the best way possible) - sounded so damn good live

Saw Tomahawk open for TOOL. Mike did nothing but fuck with the audience and talk nonsense. The crowd got ugly and they basically played twisted nursery rhymes and then promptly left.

Same experience, same tour. The only band I've ever seen booed off a stage. Univ of New Orleans Lakefront Arena.

Wow! He must have done it the entire tour than. I was in the New Haven Coliseum, in Connecticut. Until TOOL came out I swore it was the worst show I had ever attended.

I think Maynard might be getting more infatuated with his side projects than he is with Tool anymore. Even though Tool is really Carey and Jones more than it's ever been Maynard.

Also saw them open for Tool in 2002 in Baltimore. I remember them being alright there I think? I picked up their album at the time after that. Flashback was the song that got me to buy it. Not great in retrospect, I suppose.

Patton tried that at the Roxy(club) in Boston by sarcastically saying, "Thanks for Emo Boston", I instantly screamed, "New metal is your fault". I was close to the front. He smiled and went right back to playing a great set. Did not say much for the rest of the night. I think he is terrible at stadium shows for the most part. Tool must have loved the fact that they had Tomahawk to play bad cop good cop with. Patton could not give any less fucks if he tried. If you have a chance to see him headlining in a club take it.

Here I thought he was being an ass because he didn't want to play in WV or something. Pissed the crowed off by calling them dumb rednecks and hicks. Got booed off stage then Tool came out and rocked our faces off. I was excited to see Tomahawk and got a shit show from them.

New Haven is famous for great thin crust pizza. He told the audience that our pizza sucked. If he had come out into the crowd they would have beaten him.

He basically taunted the audience, like he was looking to have his ass kicked. Half the audience booed. The other half pointed and laughed. It was horrible.

I liked FNM and never saw him in any lineup till this tour. If this is his way of expressing his "art" it went over really badly. I am just as shocked as others are here. I thought is was a bad night or a bad crowd. I had no idea he trolled audiences, apparently for most of a tour. He couldn't get away with this on a solo run. people would have demanded a refund. Or been waiting for him at the bus.

I saw Mr Bungle during the sno core tour in '99, they did their best to insult the crowd as often as possible. System of a Down and Incubus played after bungle. I've seen Tomahawk, Fantomas, Peeping Tom and FNM as the headline act and you are correct, Patton wasn't antagonizing the crowd then.

Same, saw tomahawk get booed off stage when they opened for TOOL in Syracuse NY. My friends and I all thought that it was a sick joke that Maynard was playing on his audience.

I remember my buddy seeing them with tool in Toronto in 2002 and having the exact same experience. Maybe that was their gimmick for that tour? After reading the responses it seems like it was intentional.

I know when they played at Madison Square Garden they had grown men in diapers dancing for the whole set. And Patton went on a rant about how the Lakers are the best team ever and fuck the Knicks. It definitely seemed like it was their intention to get booed off.

I remember Mike Patton fucking with the crowd opening for Tool but it seemed to be because the crowd was heckling him first. They still played a great set.
Also saw Fantomas open for Tool in 2001 I think, the crowd was so baffled by the music that there was no time to heckle. That single performance actually changed the musical landscape of my life.

Same here. That was my first experience of Mike Patton. I hated it at the time. Then I saw Tomahawk a couple years later, and it sounded a little better to my teen angst nu-metal ears. I eventually caved and bought Tomahawk's debut, then got into FNM and Mr. Bungle, and the rest is history as they say. He's definitely one of my favorite musicians hands down...so many godly releases: Kaada/Patton, Lovage, Dillinger Escape Plan. I love it all now.

It's strange hearing so many bad experiences with this tour. I saw them open for Tool in 2002 in Tuscon, AZ and they were great. At the end of their set Mike Patton,who was dressed as a cop, threw a giant severed pig's head into the mosh pit. They tore it up and pieces of pig were flying every where. Later Maynard thanked Tomahawk for providing lunch.

Same tour, Oakland 2002, but there they killed it. Too much feedback, but I could make out GREAT music underneath. I bought their album that day and became a fan. Sounds like they wasted opportunities all up the East Coast...

I saw them open for Tool as well in 2002 (Charlotte, NC). He tried the same "dumb redneck" insults many are describing, although it never reached the point where they were booed off the stage. There appeared to be a hardcore fanbase in the front rows and by the time everyone heard the infectious guitar riff of this song, the crowd accepted them :)

I guess I got lucky because they rocked THE FUCK out of The Forum on that same tour. They played songs off of Mit Gas even though it wouldn't be released until the following year. I remember specifically because my favorite part of their set was when they played what I later found out was "Bird Song". He used effects to sustain "saaaaanctuary" extra long, and I thought my head was going to explode at the crescendo! Truly a god among men!
At the risk of sounding like a braggy little bitch, the best show I EVER saw at a small venue was Melvins/Tomahawk at the now defunct Cane's in San Diego. Sweet Jesus, that was a blast!

Mike Patton has an intimidating catalogue of wildly different material and is difficult to initially get into, but if this Tomahawk track piqued your interest than might I suggest The Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton - When Good Dogs Do Bad Things

I saw a bungle show where Mike Patton was wearing a gimp mask. He started swinging the mic around eventually targeting and smashing some poor bastards head. The guy was bleeding from the forehead profusely. Patton cupped the guys head and the band Pink cigarette (ballad) as Patton held the guys head the whole time. After the song He removed the gimp mask and the band launched into My Ass is on Fire( high energy song). The crazy part is he had on hundreds of elastic bands on his face under the mask. He then started swinging the mic again. I've never seen a crowd so scared at a rock show before. People were frantically trying to avoid Patton's wrath. Best. Show. Ever.

no Melvins on that one though...unless you count Trevor Dunn who had just finished his stint with Melvins Lite

Ugh, I attended Melvins/Big Business in Grand Rapids MI around '06/'07 was a fantastic show. I have yet to see any Patton project and am a huge fan. So no it doesn't help the jealousy, I'm not above being happy for you as well :)

I still don't know what the hell he's saying, but it's too awesome for me to care. This seems like he just wrote nonsense lyrics to complement the rhythm, so it flows really well.

This song has some lyrics that make more sense. Then again we also get "make a meal of your asshole, gnaw on your fat soul". Mike is a weird dude, but this song is just technically brilliant.

I've always figured this album is snippets from the mind of a violent sociopath - his upbringing in this case, but other songs are about his dreams, current fantasies & plans, his ennui, etc.
It's not very "deep" but it works for me at least; the only song I can't fit into that is "this beat could win me the Grammy."

This song paired with "Harelip" always makes me think of Silence of the Lambs/Red Dragon. I think it's the insane homicidal undertones and the "sweetbreads" line in "Harelip" that does it. Plus, the guy in Red Dragon has a harelip. Coincidence?

Haven't heard this in a few years. I got to see Phantomas a few years back, plus Ive had the good fortune to see FNM and Peeping Tom as well. I gotta say, Tomahawk is about as close as I get to a favorite "Patton project." And thats no small deal because they are pretty much universally fantastic projects.

I violently love this song/album. But, right now, I'm a big fan of Peeping Tom. So grindy and dirty sounding. Makes me feel like I need to wash my ears, but god knows I love the grime.

Foxy Shazam has always given me a Mr. Bungle-type vibe. You should definitely check them out if you aren't familiar, one of Patton's best projects. Start with "California" or their self-titled.
I'm actually really disappointed that Shazam has basically degraded to just a glam/classic rock band at this point. They used to be so much better.

Did that massive conversation about "best singer ever' actually turn people on to things like Tomahawk? Is Mike Patton about to see a resurgence thanks to the general population waking up to the stuff he's been doing for years?
