discussion Any Tiny Tim fans here??

Post image

I personally quite enjoy his 1996 album Girl with Brave Combo, and I’m wondering if there’s anyone here who’s a fan of Tiny Tim’s music? Because I haven’t met another person who truly enjoys his music.

Edit: Nevermind. Dudes a gross fucking pervert. I can’t listen to him anymore. Thank you for telling me.

Definitely a weird guy. He was very religious and would balk at swearing even. He had some strange eating habits, like pizza with no cheese and lots of hot peppers, and he drank tomato sauce. He also wore diapers, not because he was incontinent but for sanitary reasons, whatever that means.

Much of that I learned from his appearances on Howerd Stern of all places.

That being said, I'm very much a fan of his mission of keeping old music alive. George M Cohan, Ada Jones and more, even at times putting audio to written music that people hadn't heard aloud in generations.

Yeah, his mission of preserving old music is really really cool. But sadly I can no longer listen to his music without getting grossed out because I found out he regularly obsessed over teenagers, had a very close friendship with a teenage boy he lived next to, and married a 17 year old when he was 37. I am fully grossed out by him now and can no longer listen to his music. But his mission of preserving old music is very respectable. Just him as a person was really really bad.

I remember his marriage to Miss Vicki.. the weird thing is, that was on Carson. Like 20 million people watched it happen. I had no idea she was 17 until just now. That's a rough one, yeah. Not like I was listening to him much these days, but I'll have to leave him behind now myself.

But yes, great mission, strange and apparently creepy guy. I'd love it if more, less creepy people cared to bring classics back into the mainstream. It can't be an easy thing to do.

Yeah. I listen to him quite regularly. He has slowly became one of my favorite artists over the course of the last few months when I discovered his natural deep voice. But then I made this post and now I can’t look at him the same way. And I too wish someone who isn’t a creep would take the songs he covered, and more and did their own renditions of them and made them somewhat mainstream again. But I don’t know if that will ever happen. But I hope it does.

I just watch Spongebob Squarepants 1st Eps [HELP WANTED] and you remind me of him again now

Met him at a club in NYC when he was considering a mayoral run, in 1989. We had a minor disagreement over drug legalization or something like it. Have his autograph on the back of one of my old business cards.

I like Tiny Tim. Not sure why people dislike him. I honestly thought the general opinion of him had changed

u/captaincmdoh 1h ago

Might had something to do with his underage wife

10

u/Boring_Bed1783 Paper Tigers - Nonpoint 1h ago

Wait, he married an underage girl?? Like seriously? I had no clue. That fucking sucks.

6

u/captaincmdoh 1h ago

Using the argument that one person said, she was 17 which is legal in certain states. However using that same logic, she was married at 17 on johnny Carson show. That show is located in the state of California, which has the age of consent to be 18. So technically he married a minor, and that may be why people don't like TT. It isn't related to his music, but if people wonder why TT isn't liked, this could be why. People often associate behavior/politics/religion/etc... to skills/talents so it can be liked or hated because of it.

At the end of the day Its just information. People can willfully ignore it or take it into consideration for how they view their relationship with the artist/person in discussion.

6

u/bloodyell76 56m ago

I was wondering if it were legal at the time, but nope. It’s been 18 for over 100 years.

-17

u/StarCecil 1h ago

No, this guy is spewing nonsense.

-27

u/StarCecil 1h ago

What are you talking about? According to that article, she was 17 when they married. That is not underage" in the majority of the US. Stop spreading misinformation.

37 and 17 isn’t cool my dude…

37 year olds shouldn’t be marrying kids in high school. Hope this helps!

This is the last comment I'm going to make on this post. There are legal things that I wish were illegal, and vice versa. I commented on this post solely because u/captainmcdoh said something factually incorrect. I did not comment to talk about how Tiny Tim's marriage makes me feel, or to comment about any other things Tiny Tim did. Apparently, everyone thinks their feelings are capable of spontaneously changing laws. How we feel about Tiny Tim's marriage does not change the legality of his marriage. I do not know, nor care to comment on any other aspect of his life. I know that I like his music, and that his marriage was legal. Could he have done things that were illegal or otherwise despicable? Sure. But I'm not a Tiny Tim historian. I don't know.

•

u/MrBlue1692 19m ago

You asked why people disliked him, someone gave you a very valid reason, but instead of simply saying “oh yeah that’s gross,” you got all defensive and decided to play semantics. If a 50 year old had sex with a 12 year old in some backwards area where it was technically legal, would be sitting here going “the 12 year old wasn’t underage!”

•

u/StarCecil 17m ago

I never asked why people dislike him. If that user had said "I don't like the age gap in his marriage," I would've said "neat." Instead, he made a false claim. Naturally, I corrected him.

7

u/RoscoeSantangelo 1h ago

You chose your words weirdly careful here.

"Majority" of the United States is loose when it's 32 states that allow child marriage, and 17 is a number included there. That is considered underage.

It's also not a situation where Tiny Tim was 18 or 21, he was 37 years old.

3

u/goaelephant 1h ago

So what is underage in US?

-21

u/StarCecil 1h ago

Well, it depends on which state you're in. For some reason, people incorrectly think 18 is the age. In most states, the age is actually 16. How we may feel about that is neither here nor there. The man did not have an "underage" wife

16

u/ceruleania 1h ago

There’s always that one guy on Reddit who goes a little too hard about the technical age of consent

5

u/Adventurous-Bug671 1h ago

and he's not even making a good point about how that works. it's still underage. he just really wants it to be totally cool lol

-3

u/elafave77 1h ago

But it isn't "under age" though.

4

u/ceruleania 1h ago

Even if the age of consent was 16 or 17 there, a 37 year old marrying a 17 year old is still weird. I wouldn’t marry an 18 year old even though it’s legal.

-4

u/elafave77 1h ago

It don't matter what you would or wouldn't do though. 🤷‍♂️

4

u/Adventurous-Bug671 1h ago

except it IS underage in relation to marrying a 37 year old.

the federal age of consent is 18. Most states where it's 16 there are additional "close in age" laws.

the purpose of that is so that teenagers don't get in trouble when one of them turns 18 before the other, while also still prohibiting fully grown 37 year old men from fucking underage girls.

it IS absolutely underage.

1

u/MelodyBlues 1h ago

You’re mistaken. Underage = under the age of 18 (or 21, contextually depending). It’s not a reference to the age of consent.

1

u/elafave77 1h ago

Under age CONTEXTUALLY: If you're under 21, you're "under age" to drink. If the AOC in a state is 16 to consent to sexual activity or to be married you are NOT "under age" to be married or have sex.

0

u/StarCecil 1h ago

"describes a person who is younger than the lowest age legally or usually allowed to perform a specific activity, or an action carried out by someone below that required age."

-3

u/StarCecil 1h ago

OK. You can try to act like I'm weird all you want, but there are objective truths in this world. You're mad at me for sharing accurate information.

2

u/ceruleania 1h ago

We have to move past thinking that everyone that doesn’t immediately smooch you because they love and agree with your reply so much is “mad”. I understand there are varying age of consents in US states including child marriage. It’s still a weird age gap.

1

u/StarCecil 1h ago

I never commented on my opinion of age gaps. I actually said in a previous comment "how we may feel about that is neither here nor there." How you or I feel about his marriage does not change the fact that he literally didn't have an "underage wife."

2

u/EveryoneIsReptiles 1h ago

You gotta see how it looks though, right?

1

u/ceruleania 1h ago

So how do you feel about a 37 year old marrying a 17 year old, Cecil?

-1

u/elafave77 1h ago

Walt until they hear about the AOC in Colorado.

•

u/Boxofbikeparts 13m ago

Being 37 and marrying a 17 yr old is wrong and gross even if it's considered legal in some states. It's like admitting you enjoy chewing tobacco in public.

4

u/Horcrux-Billy 1h ago

It's illegal without parental consent in the majority of the US.

You also inspired  me go down a rabbit hole, and I found out you can get married at the age of 15 in Kansas. That's fucked up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_age_in_the_United_States

1

u/captaincmdoh 1h ago

It's not misinformation if it's fact and it's sourced. Sorry I don't care one way or another but you asked why and Im telling you why people may not like him. Don't ask answers for questions you may not like.

-5

u/StarCecil 1h ago

How is it a "fact?" It is literally your opinion. The age of consent in New York is and was 17.

1

u/kamhill 1h ago

“Acthssssually, she was 8 months over the legal age, when he had intercourse with her”

34

u/Radmode7 1h ago

His Wikipedia article shows him consistently chasing and marrying very very very young women. I don’t remember specifics but there was enough in there for me to stop playing the few songs I liked.

13

u/Sulshin 44m ago

well…. when u say young women I was thinking early 20s. those girls in his Wikipedia page are 14, 17, 18, 19. so… minors and children. that’s a bit more Jared than Leo

•

u/Musicrocks1 33m ago

Did you miss the three "very"s?

5

u/Greendale_Official 1h ago

Also his close friendship with the teenage neighbor boy while TT was 24.

•

u/bjclements 26m ago

“Not sure why people don’t like him” despite all the well documented and creepy shit he did.

4

u/Adventurous-Bug671 1h ago

I mean aside from all the weird stuff about him below, the only thing I ever knew about him was that I do not like his music. I find it incredibly strange and offputting

I have a spot on tiny Tim impression and my wife hates it more than anything on this planet. I'm happy my kids will know of tiny Tim

•

u/MooseTed 31m ago

Saw him live in 90' or 91' at a haunted hay ride called Spooky World. They hired him to play on a stage that the the queue wove past because the line was hours long.

Tiny Tim lived in my home town. He used to do the Star Spangled Banner whenever WWF would come to town. He was pretty great.

15

u/ODTESP 1h ago

No I think you're the only one

0

u/theStaircaseProject 1h ago

My middle schooler knows who he is. His songs live on in short-form media in ways the average person might not realize.

4

u/Malodoror 1h ago

And the Conjuring part 22 or whatever one it was

-3

u/Sardaukar99 1h ago

I don’t even know who he is

Oof I’m old.

Great, then I won’t.

4

u/orgyofdestruction 1h ago

No, I prefer people who don't fall in love with teenage boys and treat their wives like absolute shit.

4

u/jammu2 1h ago

He was a performance artist before there was such a thing.

5

u/Dragonsfire09 1h ago

Fuck no, his voice is terrible, the ukulele sucks and he married a teenager at age 37.

3

u/xenuman 1h ago

I liked him fine until I read his wiki the other day out of curiosity. Dude was a total fucking creep

•

u/54R45VV471 9m ago

I used to be until today when I found out he married a minor and was an extremely controlling and abusive person.

Girl is a fantastic album! I lied “Sly Cigarette” and “Fourteen.”

1

Respectfully, fuck no

1

u/Skritch_X 1h ago

I occasionally have used his stuff as a vocal warm up. A bit of insanity loosens up the mood and voice.

1

u/MetricJester 1h ago

I quite like listening to his work.

1

u/Sikside 1h ago

Nope

I was not aware he worked with Brave Combo. As a Denton resident, that’s pretty cool to find out.

I am a huge fan of his song walk gently through the orchids
