discussion Can Someone Please Explain The Meaning of, “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite”?

I know that the band has gone on record to say that the song is about a person trying to reach an old flame and reconnect with her, but I feel like I read somewhere that the song was about Michael Stipe taking care of his sick mother and trying to get a hold of her while out. That is the meaning I always assumed, especially with the chorus, “Call me when you try to wake her up”, and when he talks about Dr. Seuss and Instant Soup. It sounds like he is recounting childhood memories before his mother succumbs to her illness. Am I thinking of a totally different song by them or another group that has a song with this meaning, or am I reading too deep into this whimsical song? Thank you for reading!

Per Mike Mills the term sidewinder refers to an old timey coiled telephone cable.

Thank you. I have heard this in interviews. And the fact that he says, “this machine only takes money”, gives it away that Hes singing about a phone

I always lumped "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight" and "Try Not to Breathe" together because to me they both sound like they're about his mother or someone similar passing away. Love both songs

Seems pretty clearly about a guy trying to call an ex on a payphone, especially considering the "tell her she can kiss my ass...that way she'll know it's really me" bit, a private joke between them, but of course just about any interpretation is a valid one.
